Big 12 Media Days - Day 1

Patterson on facing Kansas State and Bill Snyder (where Patterson played football):

"Coach Snyder is a guy I look up to.  He has built a dynasty at his place and has won when nobody else could there."

Bowlsby is an extremely eloquent speaker but IMO his speech had a bit of an ominous tone to it.  I appreciate his candor but it really was more of what we have heard about the NCAA and the deficiencies in the system.  With this being said he was extremely positive and optimistic about the Big 12 as a league and where the LEAGUE is headed.
Maybe it's his way of setting the stage for P5 autonomy?

It's a fait accompli unless the NCAA bends over and makes numerous concessions.  My only fear is jeopardizing the great "Cinderalla stories" in the NCAA hoops and baseball tourneys.  Otherwise, good riddance NCAA.

It's a bloated, outdated bureaucracy that has outlived its usefulness.  The THSCA fiasco is just another example that they're out of touch and incompetent. #IBP

Mike Gundy on Media Days this year:  "I felt like Brittney Spears walking in here with all the lights."  "My first year here I think people thought I worked at the hotel."

Texas Tech head football coach Kilff Kingsbury up next.

Player representatives in attendance:

WR Bradley Marquez

LB Sam Eguavoen
RB Kenny Williams

First question out of the gate for Coach Kingsbury was regarding the Nigel Bethel incident and if there are any other things in store for him related to punishment.

Kingsbury:  "We'll do some things in-house."

Yeah!  You just gotta realize where Bowlsby is coming from and who he represents.  Change is going to come, whether he likes it or not.  Seems to me that he would be in a better position if he would try to be in front of said change trying to help form it rather than try to hold back the deluge.

Kingsbury discussing QB Davis Webb's success last year.  Says Webb is a very hard working quarterback and mentioned Patrick Mahomes as a guy that will compete and is very very capable.

On Nigel Bethel's skillset Kingsbury says it remains to be seen what he brings in totality on the field but he definitely brings a level of speed which the Red Raiders do not currently possess.

Bethel is suspended for the first 3 weeks of the season.

Kingsbury only has 2 scholarship quarterbacks (5 including walk-ons) and says freshman Patrick Mahomes will see playing time this year.

well, if nothing else, bowlsby got some attention for the Big !2 it might otherwsie not have received. lot of chatter about cheating on the airwaves this afternoon.

On the potential of paying players, Bowlsby says it is difficult to project paying football and basketball players and not others.  Says football and basketball players don't work any harder than student-athletes in other sports.
Another solid point...
