Baylor running thread.

...it's a sign that things are just out of control in a big way in Waco. And while it seems Baylor folks are starting to become alarmed, can the Big 12 afford more of this stuff dripping out every few days?
I've gotta believe BU ran a criminal background check on this assistant strength coach, Washington.

"Soliciting prostitution" wouldn't be on it if he'd never been stung in Philadelphia. It's just bad timing and bad luck for BU. I'm actually kinda surprised Waco PD booked Washington if the Briles Era stories are to be believed. This bust doesn't fit their alleged MO of covering up BU misdeeds.

The Briles Era is over at BU, I doubt very seriously that the Waco PD wants to go back under that microscope again and that they'll be a little more by the book than they have in the past.

Ah...so it's CYA

"See? The Waco PD isn't in BU's pocket!"

"For a big time collegiate football program, perception is as important as reality.  Coach Herman made a mistake in hiring the man, he knows it now, but realizes if he fires him immediately without clear evidence that he was involved, every decision he makes from this point forward will not only be questioned, but in a way would undermine his authority to run the program."

So you're suggesting that Herman would fire Horny today, sees the whole thing as a mistake, and only because of "perception" does Herman not pull the trigger now?

Do you have ANYTHING AT ALL to back up this claim?

That appears to me to be going deep into someone's mind without having the ability to go deep into someone's mind.
Thanks for pointing out that I don't have those type of powers, that's a relief, that would have been a burden to carry the rest of my life.  Just trying to use a little logic that a Head Coach, who just took over a major program, didn't think that a QC coaching hire would be questioned on NSD; a day that is traditionally all about optimism.

You're welcome. It seems some of us have to be reminded from time to time.

But even in this post, you assume that Herman is somewhere sweating out the fact that he had to answer one question about this on NSD. The PC and the whole day were about optimism. You assume this was all a surprise? Why?

By contrast, I think Herman is smart enough to know he would have to answer a question or two along the way about this. And it didn't seem to phase him when he did.

Herman said he vetted the guy's time at Baylor, has known the guy for a long time. Maybe that explains why he's not as worked up about any of this as some here are?

I read an article this morning that they had run one and that he passed.

Saw the same thing...

Waco Tribune - Baylor Strength Coach Arrested

A statement from the Baylor athletics department sent late Monday reads, in full: “After a full criminal background check was completed and cleared, Brandon Washington was recently hired as an assistant in the Football Strength and Conditioning area. Baylor was notified on February 4 of Brandon Washington’s arrest and terminated his employment immediately that day.â€

“When we arrived at Baylor, we made a commitment to character and integrity in our program,†Rhule said. “Brandon’s actions are completely unacceptable. We will not tolerate conduct that is contradictory to these values.â€

The guy hired in December, arrested and booked Sat morning and fired as soon as the Baylor athletic department found out.  Can't see how that equates to CYA.
It equates to CYA for Waco PD if they hadn't prosecuted those associated with BU in the past.

Thought that was pretty clear in my post. Yes, BU did the right thing immediately firing Washington if his behavior didn't meet their new "code of ethics" or whatever.

Is the NCAA still investigating and is Baylor in any danger of the death penalty or have they been told with the changes that have been made no further action will be taken.  I have not really been keeping up with the NCAA portion of this with all the other lawsuits and things.

NCAA is still investigating. However, they're looking for violations only, such as what came out in the emails last week re Briles. I would imagine that investigation was turned up a notch after those emails were released.

I can see your point and have to agree after doing a little digging.  I did a search for anything that mentioned punishment for officers involved in the BU cover-up and found nothing.  I did find a couple of half-assed explanations but nothing of substance.

I would be curious to see what would happen if Baylor threatened suit to have these funds released.

I have zero knowledge as to the legality of this action. Something about it seems reactionary. Of course we would all like to take Baylor to the woodshed but this reeks of political opportunism to me.

They have embarrassed the whole conference for a couple of years now and continue to do so. I'm sure the B12 and their army of lawyers checked into the legality before taking action. I don't expect baylor to go away quietly, but glad the B12 stepped up and did something. May only be a PR move, but showing they don't agree with what is going on in Waco had to be done at some point with something other than talk.

If it is simply a PR move and there is no legal basis to withhold the money then it is nothing other than talk, regardless of how much we clutch at our pearls.I guess they are on double secret probation now. That'll teach 'em.

P.S. I hope you know I am just busting your balls. Written sarcasm is rarely obvious.
