Are we starting our "annual slide" now?

Did winning 20 games automatically seal another year for Barnes?

Could we potentially be looking at losing 7 of our final 8 games?

I really want us to have a crack at getting Marshall or Smart before other programs do. That's the problem.

I hate to say it, but had the same thought.

But every team is unique, including this one.

We could very easily lose 3 outta 4. It's gonna be semi-tough.

I think Barnes has done a really good job this year. 20 wins and a 1st Rd win should be enough to justify his return. I'd also hate to lose Myles over more coaching uncertainty.

Agree, but they have rebounded this year after tough stretches and strung some solid wins together. Barnes needs a centerpiece to go with current players to take it to the next level again. The purge of players surprised me, but now makes sense. Must have been more frustrating to Barnes than us fans with the poor play last few years. However, he recruited those guys! having Lanier back looks like the best recent addition to the team...and of course Taylor

No way we lose 3 out of the next 4. 2-2 at worst, 3-1 is likely, and 4-0 is a possibility.

We are not a serious threat for Turner. Most people feel he will choose based on Embiid's draft status at Kansas, but I think he ends up a Horn in the end regardless.

This is where Barnes will earn his keep. I understand a loss against the Jayhawks, not in that manner but I understand and accept it. We have seen this too many times and now it's time to finish, no excuses. He has proven it can be done with this team, this year. If he doesn't make it to the second round it will be the same ole song and dance. The ball is in his court....

I hate that the media neglects to mention the fact that some of those first place titles were actually ties in which KU finished with the #2 seed in conference. Either way, however, it's impressive.

Baylor is playing much better ball now that they have what's his face back from injury. Playing at Tech is no "gimme" game either. The only for sure win we have left is TCU.

If we lose 7 of 8 and don't make it out of the first round of the NCAA, you've got almost a Mack situation here. If we land Turner, Barnes is back I'm assuming.

We ended up going 4-4 over the last 8.

Lost the last 5 road games in a row (the last road win was 5-point win over weakling TCU).

We lost 4 of our final 6.

But won last 8 home games in a row.

Finished 22-9. This was a bad loss to end on obviously as Tech had lost 6 in a row. Hurt our RPI which was around 30.

On the bright side, we did get the 3rd seed in the Big12 while were were only a projected 8 seed coming into the season.

So, was this the typical Barnes late season collapse?

Not quite since we did win our home games, including that win over Kansas.

But we definitely peaked earlier in the season (Jan to early Feb), which does seem to be a pattern.

Beating WVU (who will be coming off their best win of the season and let Huggy meet a contract bonus) becomes crucial for seeding purposes.

We probably need to win 3 games to seed well now, but this seems unlikely.

What do you guys think?

I wouldn't fire Barnes after this year. If he doesn't make an elite 8 next year though I would think about it. I can't hate on Barnes when he's got one of the youngest teams in the country in the tournament. Will be dependent on next year. I think he's done enough this year to save his job.

The Horns exceeded expectations this season, check. Expectations were very low because of Barnes inability to recruit talent that could consistently maintain successful basketball seasons, check. 2012-2013 was a disaster, check. 2013-2014 is demonstrating an all too familiar pattern in the last seven years of Barnes tenure, check.

Texas needs to keep Barnes on for another year because a one & done player will commit and salvage the Barnes program, maybe but is it worth it for one year?

I think 2014 is the time to bite the bullet and make the needed changes in the basketball and baseball programs. Texas did the right thing with football, it's time to rebuild the athletic department. Hook 'Em!

Congrats to Coach!
