And THAT'S why we need Max Wittek...

With the news being released by the UT Athletic Department that David Ash will be out for the Spring with a foot injury that requires surgery, it's becoming more and more apparent that we NEED Wittek on our roster. I don't say this because I think he'll be better than Ash or even Swoopes, but it gives us another option where we aren't having to rely on a true freshman and a former receiver/TE as our only backups at QB.

*smh* Feel badly for Ash.  I can't decide if he's just unlucky or fragile.  Regardless, we really need Wittek now!

I think he'll sign with UT soon.

So we're down to Swoopes, Miles O and Trey Holtz.

Who else can play?

Jalen Overstreet

Mykkele Thompson

Yes I agree but as bad as it might sound, it's good it happened in Spring Practice and not the fall. If Wittek gets here, it will be a steep learning curve for him just to be the backup. If Ash broke his foot in the fall, that would mean Wittek would be the season starter after being on campus for 2 months.

For this season, Ash must start in 75% of the games, Wittek the backup, Overstreet the Emergency QB, and Swoopes and Heard redshirting. Even that doesn't guarantee anything but that would be ideal to build QB depth that the Longhorns have lacked for at least a half decade.

Someone tell me exactly what Wittek has done at USC that makes him anything more than a warm body here at Texas.

Sorry, but I'm just not seeing it.

Maybe he will be just a warm body, but he's a warm body with more experience than any other backup QB that we will have on the roster next year. He will give us more flexibility to redshirt Heard so we aren't stuck with Miles O. as our emergency QB.

We just don't have a clue about Witteck, and should not make assumptions about him. Having another quarterback on the roster with some ability will be absolutely necessary.

I loved Mack Brown, but my biggest criticism of him as a coach was his failure to recruit and develop the quarterback position, particularly after Colt. You just HAVE to have two or more capable of playing reasonably well at a time. Mack really never had more than one at a time by the time Vince came along.

Take Ash out of the equation and we have zero experience at the QB position.  That is a big concern and one I believe accentuates the need for us to bring in someone like Wittek.

nothing really. kinda like Houston signing Ryan Fitzpatrick. Strikes me as a JAG, but let's face it...Ash comes with doubts and if we want to RS heard, we could use a JAG.

Heard will play, I don't think red shirting him was ever going to be a real possibility especially once it was made clear that there would be a new coaching staff. Max looks the part, but keep in mind he could not win the job at USC, and that's no knock..there are plenty of talented back ups around the nation, but USC were not world beater last year. It's going to be rough at that position anyway, even if Ash is healthy, I would rather a young guy get in there and get ready.

He's a big strong kid with a big arm. Looks like a David Ash clone. Maybe a little stronger arm. Good mechanics. Better legs than most give him credit. No history of injuries. After 3 coaches in 3 yrs. at SC, could be all he needs is a fresh start.

The first vid is HS highlights.

The second is from mid-season '12 (RS frosh) as he prepares to replace Barkley.

He's got good potential and is a good fit for Watson.

Nearly impossible for a true frosh to do well as a D1 QB.  Not sure if throwing him in the deep end is a good idea.

Recent RS Freshmen that blossomed as 1st year starters that I can think of off the top of my head: Johnny Manziel, Jameis Winston, Marcus Mariota, Brett Hundley. Hopefully he can RS too.

Thanks for the links to the videos HornNdriftwood.  I knew nothing about Wittek before watching these clips, and hence I refrained from commenting about him. Opinions don't mean a lot to me until I can see them play, On the field is best but sometimes you have to make do with video. Now that I have seen the clips, I am convince that he would be a GREAT pickup for us. Maybe he will be "just another warm body", but if he is, he is one that has a hell of a stong arm. I don't understand the negative comments that I have occasionally read about this guy. He looks as good in his videos as any of the QB play that I saw from UT QB's over the past 3 seasons.

I am confident in the coaching ability of this staff. If Wittek is a guy for us, he could blossom under our staff. You don't know until you see them on the field. From what little I have seen, Wittek has all the physical ability he needs to succeed. Sure hope he decides in our favor and is enrolled here in another couple of months.
