Agree or Disagree?

I think that while she has a point, her delivery skills need some work.

Most every D1 school that gets an uber-talented kid has experienced one-and-done's.  Duke doesn't have the corner on that market.

Her tweets sound like sour grapes IMO.

That's probably true.

Whether it's "sour grapes" or not I can see where she's coming from. Wisconsin feels more like a college basketball team and Duke not so much (Winslow, Jones and Okafor could all be going pro after 1 year). I agree though that most teams probably recruit the one and done players.

It doesn't feel like amateur athletics to me when players are coming to school for a couple semesters with no intention to stay in school.

1st question.... Who is she??

2nd question.... What can be done about it? This is the way the system is setup and people will take advantage of it whenever possible.

she's a US Senator from Misssouri. not sure why she felt the need to get in this.

the NBA is the reason for one-and-dones. they instituted a 19-year old minimum to be drafted. kids have to go to school or a couple have chosen to play overseas.

i also feel baseball does it right. if a kid feels he's ready to go pro after highschool, god bless him and let him go.

I have mixed feelings on this. There are kids who don't go to college or don't finish who do quite well in life. If they don't have to go to college, why should athletes be different?

"One and Done" is bad for college basketball.

Let the stars and prima donnas go straight to the pros or Euro leagues if they have no interest in pursuing a degree. I'd rather the focus be on true scholar-athletes. If this "waters down" the NCAA talent level, so be it.

You're either committed to academics or you're not.

I agree with her 100%.  I hate the fact that colleges are the free minor leagues for the professional money machines.  I hate the fact that more than a few NBA millionaires don't even know how to balance their check books or can read a book.  I hate the fact that most of them are unable to speak clear English or to understand every day words.

I am not now nor have I ever been a proponent of viewing college as a welfare system for the underprivileged - who just have some athletic ability.

I firmly believe if a kid accepts a scholarship and then goes one and done, then the pro team who drafts him should be penalized an exorbitant and punitive amount of money.  I, also, believe a college that offers a schollie should offer for 4 years and it should be a binding contract for both parties.  This will give the school pause as to whom they offer and the kid pause as to who's offer is accepted.

Also, once an agent is discovered the kid should be considered professional, the contract breached and both parties severely penalized.

I for one find it refreshing that a politician is willing to speak her mind like this without PC wordsmithing.
I'm right there with you. Wish we had a lot more bluntness in the world and a good fist fight in congress every once in a while wouldn't exactly be a bad thing

Just to add to your point, I think at a bare minimum the pro team that drafts the player should have to reimburse the college for whatever the student athletes expenses are. For example, if colleges start guaranteeing a four year scholarship and the student is a one and done,  the NBA should be forced to pay back that college the full amount of the four year tuition. It's not going to stop the Kevin Durant's of the world but it may stop the Isaiah Taylor's who could use a little more seasoning.

I guess I'm missing it. Speaking out against the one-done system isn't exactly taking an opposing view on a controversial subject. I don't think Ive Ever seen anybody speak in favor of it.

I don't think Isaiah is gonna have to work that problem.

The Israeli or Greek team he plays for won't feel obligated to reimburse UT or the NCAA.

1) why would it have any impact on a player's decision?

2) the nba should reimburse Duke for it's student expenses for the 3 guys who will likely declare? i'll wager the money they made during this tourney run will cover those kids' expenses.

See, that's just the thing.  I have no problem with colleges making money.  More power to them.  Maybe it will help lower tuition costs, pay for teachers salaries, build better facilities, provide more scholarships, etc.  Who knows?  But we do know that professional sports exist to line the team owners pockets.  That's for sure.

Besides, not every team makes the championship game - in any sport.
