Aggy's true rival

We constantly hear the BS about new playmates in the SEC, that Aggy has moved past Texas and has bigger fish to fry etc. It all sounds great and quotable, but we all know that true rivalry (and hatred) run far deeper.

Case in point: Last week work took me to the frozen wasteland of Yellowknife (way north Canada). I was hiding from the cold in a pub and a guy in an A&M jacket sat down near me at the bar. I couldn't help but say something, so I casually asked him "didn't you guys give up 50 points to a basketball school in your bowl game this year?".

The guy looks me over to figure out if I'm an ignorant local, or if I'm insulting him. I had no Texas gear on. I smirked a little bit and he instantly went into a Texas bashing rage calling out our record, how badly we lost our games this year and even lamented having traveled 2500 miles to wind up sitting across from a f*^king "tea sipper" - all before I even uttered the word "Texas" - but he knew... and it certainly never crossed his mind that I was from LSU.

Following about 10 minutes of heated debate the bartender moved us to opposite ends of the bar so everyone could get back to watching the hockey game!

Good fun, but the point is that rivalries can't be removed and recreated by the stroke of a pen, or through the insistence of school officials.

Are you bragging about talking shit to a random stranger? Fact of the matter is that I consider Texas our rival, but my reasoning for rooting for Texas' failure has much more to do with recruiting advantage than hatred over the school. I think we all forget that these are academic institutions doing a tremendous amount of legwork in bettering their community/state. Sure, athletics are fun and bring a little edge towards each school, but a university has alot more meaning to it than how good its' football program is. I'm hoping the LSU game can develop into a serious rivalry. It has started off similar to A&M-Texas in my lifetime, but LSU has shown signs of wavering and our program looks to be on the rise, maybe things will even out and some of my Aggie brethren can stop obsessing over being better than Texas and focus that energy on being better than everybody.

Personally, I'm glad to see another Aggie on the board. As far as the OP's post, it's something you can get upset about if you want too. But it's really not worth it. At the end of the day, it was a simple argumentative exchange that means nothing. With that said, even though I really love LSU, I just don't see the rivalry working. LSU to put it simply, doesn't care enough about A&M to develop a rivalry. At this point in time, Aggieland is better of looking at an Ole Miss, Missouri or Mississippi State. And as far as being a program on the rise, I think that's still yet to be seen. Granted A&M had two fairly good seasons the past two years, they're losing their three best players in the Draft this year. A lot of stock is being put into this incoming draft class and if it doesn't pan out, A&M could end up regretting the day they entered SEC country. With all of that said, it's a guessing game right now. Nobody knows what A&M is going to look like in 3-4 years. They could be the next best SEC Dominant, or they could be the newest SEC Doormat.

I see what you done there and I like it.

Not trying to be a jerk or anything buddy, but he was in a pub not a lecture hall. And this is a internet forum built around Longhorn sports. Don't get me wrong, I respect you being here and all, but you should expect to see the occasional Aggie bashing just as much as I would expect the same on an Aggie site.

Better than Texas? We pushed your $hit in 76 times. You have a ways to go before you can make claims like that.

Talking s*$t to strangers is one of very few options to pass time when it's -20 in a mining town. Bar fights also rank highly. Given the environment, our exchange was pretty civil and nobody left angry. I think we were both happier arguing football than watching hockey.

Anything that adds more passion is a good thing and I'm always happy to have an Aggie on the board.

Funny I never really looked at Aggie as a rival. More like an annoyance. You have to beat us a little more often to be a rival. OU is UT's rival. Aggie is more like the freshman QB that is coming in and thinks he can steal your job. You have to beat him down to keep him in his place but the truth is you really could care less about him.

Exactly.....

Aggy, let us know when you have a winning record against L$U, Ala, or Fla...Have a great time coming in 4th or 5th in your division...

Action speaks louder than words......

When A&M bravely ran away from us it was because they couldn't compete. It will be interesting to see how long they can ride the SEC wave. Clearly, that is all they have to sell and if you don't believe me then talk to some of their fans. They talk more about the SEC than they do about A&M.

And I still can't see why the SEC is continuing to get that same hype after A&M and Missouri have gone in and destroyed the myth. Two non contenders go in and are instantly relevant?

For now though, it was a great move for A&M. They were never going to get out of our shadow if they didn't tuck and run.

In that statement I meant that Aggies focus too much on just being better than Texas. That attitude breeds mediocrity, you should want to be better than everybody. It even reads as such, how was that statement taken out of context? It wasn't the fact that he was attacking an Aggie that I disagree with, it was the fact that he would just go up to some random stranger and talk shit. I see this kind of stuff on Texags all the time and I find it absolutely repulsive. Coaxing an argument and starting a dick measuring argument with someone you don't know just makes you a bitch who needs to down others to feel important.

Neither school can say they have moved on until the other school is no longer mentioned in their fight song. Please make this happen!!!!

The Texags story's always end predictably with the Aggie punching the "sip" and knocking him out. You're right, they're on that site all the time.

Everyone should love their school. Just don't be aggy about it. If you have an aggy that went through fish camp, most hope is gone. I don't think they have brain cells left after that.

Before they joined the SEC, aggy hadn't managed to beat an SEC team in 20 years. They have a lifetime losing record against the conference as a whole. They have a lifetime losing record against Alabama, Arkansas, LSU, Florida and Tennessee. As for the other seven conference teams, they have played them a combined 40 times over the past 120 years. The only team in the entire conference they have a lifetime record winning record that is more than 2 games over .500 against is Ole Miss.

You can't have a rivalry unless you beat the other team every now and then, you play them over a number of years and the games you play against them have some significance with respect to winning at least a division championship. Plain and simple, over 120 years, aggy simply hasn't been a threat to any SEC team, which is why none of them consider aggy a rival and which is why none of them will consider aggy a rival for at least 20 years.

aggy's got a nice bump from joining the confederacy, and it didn't hurt having a Heisman-winning QB around for a couple of years. Sumlin's taken advantage of the bump to get a couple of very good recruiting classes, so there is some young talent in the pipeline.

Now comes the hard part. Good luck on replacing J.F.F. Heisman winners don't grow on trees. Keep in mind that this past year, with a returning Heisman winner and other all-American types, and arguably the best team that school's had in years, aggy lost four games and finished middle of the pack in the SEC. I'm NOT predicting a complete fall off of the ledge, but agricultural was middle of the pack most years in the Big XII, and that looks like the norm, if that, in the SEC. Agri-fan might also want to keep fingers crossed that Sumlin hangs around longer than two or three years. He looks made for the NFL, and has been pretty non-committal about hanging around in collie station longer than it takes to retrofit Kyle Field.

This is no "obsession" over the agricultural and mechanical college, but I am an interested observer, since I'm a big college football fan in general. The ag school has a lot more going for it now than it did two or three years ago, but fame is fleeting and we live in a "what have you done for me lately" world. I'm impressed with schools that can win a lot over a long time, and the jury's still out on the team over in collie station.
