A Troubling Trend

Patterson has "dealt" with some of the minor players already. The major players, the most visible ones, will be taken care of in due course. At least those that need taken care of.

Everyone has been opining about Strong and recruiting when they need to pay attention to Steve Patterson. Pay very close attention to what he is saying. He is not woofing!

Listen to what he says about aggy, restructuring, foreign country games, the Texas brand, paying players, etc.
I will start being impressed with Steve Patterson when he quits talking about aggy and starts delivering for the University of Texas. He talks more than he delivers.

sounds to me like your real beef is you don't know what's going on. but you assume whatever is going on, that you don't know anything about, HAS to be negative or counter productive. for all either of us know, there could be any number of plans or initiatives underway that are either still being negotiated or aren't ready to be announced publicly. that really wouldn't be unusual in the world of big business.

And therein lies our fundamental difference. When i don't know something, i withhold opinion until i do. you on the other form opinions on unknowns and broadcast the same ones ad nauseum in a style similar to Rainman blathering on about 'gotta see Wapner'.
My real beef is I don't see results. The fact the Haney article was out there and the accusations against Strong as an individual weren't dealt with is an indictment on the Bellmont media team. At some point, Bellmont needs to address the attacks against the program that have pretty much unchecked since the last round of Big 12 defections.
At some point, results are all that matter and Patterson hasn't delivered a damned thing since he started cashing his million dollar paychecks.

Interesting.

You do understand his talk is reponse to questions, right?

What did you expect him to do?  By himself, he can't initiate realignment - so that is out.  By himself, he can't add teams to the conference - that's out as well.  By himself, he can't intiate bolting from the conference. All of this requires admin and BOR approval.

Actually, his responsibilites are UT athletics.  He can replace coaches - which he has done with the football team.  He won't replace the basketball or baseball coaches - not after the seasons they have had.  Not this year.

He can restructure Bellmont - which he has already started.  However, and once again, some restructuring requires presidential approval.

He can find ways to promote the Texas brand - and he is well on his way in doing this.  Including games being played OOC with both our baseball and football teams.

Because UT athletics are his ball of wax, he HAS to be concerned with UT's competition and aggy is certainly a state recruiting competitor.  Thus he discusses them.

Honestly, I really don't know what you expected of him - he doesn't run our university.  Also, like Strong, he hasn't been here that long either.

You must find a way to deal with your unhappiness with his choice of football coaches.  Strong is not the enemy - he is our coach and as Longhorn fans we should support him until we can't.

I just looked at your profile.  You are in PARAGUAY?  That was tongue-in-cheek, right?  :)

Be careful, now Doc!  A herd of Paraguayan tapirs might just be headed your way!  ;)

I'm guessing the post was also directed at me. I have been more negative toward the program lately than I ever have been.

When Patterson came on board, we were promised change, but it seems we were mislead. That generates a lot of frustration. I have thrown in the towel on Steve Pattetson. I think hiring him was a colossal mistake. He seems to have no plan whatsoever to manage the image of the program in the media and as a result, the program is getting trashed my an increasing chorus of sportswriters.

For me, it's tough to believe the problems of the program are going to be fixed. As long as writers for ESPN openly talk about our head coach as a did appointment, it is tough to believe recruiting will turn around. Maybe one of the recruiting followers could give us some insight into what high school coaches are really saying about the program. Maybe a Friend of Bevo could let us know if Patterson is aware of the frustration of the fans or if he ever intends to deliver the change we were lead to believe he would lead.

The negatives that are being ignored by Steve Patterson are starting to take their toll. On the image of the program and on the fan base. Someone needs to start delivering leadership to the overall program. I don't see Patterson as being capable of doing it.

I don't understand your angst.

1. What has Patterson had the opportunity to do except allow his new football coach to get set up, find out he's still got a hoops coach, then watch his baseball team do what few thought they could?

I think you're being highly impatient here. I have no expectation whatsoever in making any conclusions about the biggest decision Patterson has made UNTIL that gets to be put to the test. We haven't played a single down of football.

I'm not necessarily looking at success in terms of W's and Ls. I'm looking at how we play the game. Do we improve from week to week. Are we developing our talent and getting better? Because lets face, Strong has a QB situation he didn't create. He can't help that. But we can observe and make conclusions based on how Strong handles this situation and the adversity that comes with it.

Recruiting season is only five months in, the most active 7 months are ahead. How can you possibly stop now and try to draw a conclusion?

2. ESPN and the pundits are going to talk. Patterson wasn't hired to muzzle the media. We're getting what Mack Brown left us. It's come from years of producing Mack Brown type teams. This isn't Patterson's fault and it's not Strong's fault.

The only responsiblity Patterson has is shedding that god-forsaken image we've cemented into the minds of the media and the nation about our program.

The opportunity to do that hasn't arrived. And we're already waving a white flag? No friggin way.
