A taste of Texas

I believe if you eat at bluebonnet and Mary's in the same day and have the CFS at both, you'll be able to lie in bed that night and actually hear your veins clogging.

I've had both and I give the edge to Mary's.

This week I discovered a top FIVE CFS place in Texas, IMO. The Southern Flyer Cafe. It's at the Brenham Airport. Just solid CFS. Not near as big as Mary's. Oh, the girls wear Poodle Skirts with pony tails. Great juke box too. Real throwback joint.

As of now, my route will be an early pit stop at Czech stop on Friday morning. Then I've got an interview to do out East of Dallas early Friday afternoon. I need a recommendation for an early dinner somewhere out in the Forney/Terrell/Rockwall area.

Is Cane Rosso my best bet for lunch on Saturday before heading to the stadium?

Then on Sunday, I'll hit Strawn (Mary's) for lunch and head to Hico (Koffee Kup).

Try the Country Smokehouse in Forney.  NEver been but I know some folks that live there and they say the food is great.

I just ate at Whataburger in Temple. It hasn't changed one bit since I left over 10 years ago.

On a related note...I was sitting quietly eating my meal when a HS kid sits a few tables away and starts filling out a job application. A few minutes later he looks at me and says "What's today's date?"

Uhh...seriously? How can anyone not remember that today is September 11th??? What the heck are they teaching these kids?

that's both sad and funny

Now we're talking!

You've gotta get off the interstate to find a real gem, IMO. Mary's & Bluebonnet Cafe sound like winners.
OK, since you're now off the well-traveled road; Coopers in Llano is a must.  If you don't feel like you have time to go out to Coopers, then stay on 281.  South side of Hamilton is a place called Nina & Glen's BBQ.  Little hole in the wall on the west side of the road.  Stopped in last Friday for a sandwich, and ended up staying over an hour shooting the bull and talking 'cue with Glen.  Got to try all of the different BBQ items, of which, smoked bologna was the most creative/interesting.  Overall a pretty good BBQ joint.  I'd recommend it as a stop.  It ain't Franklin, but it is good.  Interesting spice rubs as well.  Sign the wall; I did.

Yeah, but I bet he could review a movie like nobody's business.

You have to one day try city meat market in Giddings or Stoney's in Giddings. Best cue around!!!!!! Stoney's has melt in your mouth brisket and city market has everything. The famous tootsie of snows barbecue in Lexington learned her trade at city market.

We've never stopped there but will now put it on the list...

On the square in Blanco is another BBQ spot we've tried in the past. . . .

Ate at a little BBQ joint in Salado last night called Johnny's BBQ. Unfortunately it was decked out in aggie memorabilia, including Manziel jerseys, autographed photos, etc. Even though the environment was less than Longhorn friendly, I decided to try out the brisket while my uncle had the all-you-can-eat ribs. The brisket was good, but I preferred BBQ sauce on it, which tells me that it wasn't quite good enough. I didn't try the ribs, but my uncle had a couple of servings and tells me that they are a favorite of his. I'd recommend the place if you don't care to sit through aggie love.

You lost me here.

In my opinion, if you need sauce for my briskets, then I've done something wrong.

Should've gone to Pok-E-Joe's.  ;)

Tried that spot, some of the worst Q I've ever had. . . .
