A Lot Going On

Some good points, Randolph. However, I seriously doubt that Mack is a mandatory part of the process of helping deal with the big donors. It's very likely (assuming those running the coaching change movement are accurately reported) that a new, highly skilled HC is going to want or even need Mack to go hand-in-hand with him in any capacity. Seems to me that it would be very awkward, unless the guy is someone Mack's had tremendous influence in getting hired. I think that's the last thing those in charge of change would want, and likely shouldn't be any kind of deterrent from hiring who they want.

If someone comes up to me and says they have a contact inside the program who told them Saban is signing tonight, I avoid that person. Either they are a liar or they can't be trusted.
I find it tough to believe Saban would sign with UT, but I can't dismiss the rumors, either. The UT athletics program is quickly moving to $200mil in revenue. The reason Texas can spend big money to get the right guy is because getting the wrong guy could cost the program tens of millions annually.

UT athletics employs over 300 people. We need a new MBB coach and a new baseball coach. We suck at using social media to engage fans. Guys like Bill Little need to go. A lot of people need to go. I'm hoping the number of new faces is close to 150.

The new AD is going to have to rebuild a $200 million organization from the ground up. He is going to need to bring with him people he trusts. There is no way he will hire a head coach without direct experience running a major college program or someone he doesn't have an existing relationship with. Mack will have to sign on to help the new coach deal with the big donors.

Who are the people who fit that description? Not Tomlin, not Gruden, not any coordinator. The list is Saban, Holgerson, shaw and maybe Briles. Holgerson isn't coming. Briles isn't going to want to have Mack roaming the halls and controlling the relationship with the donors. Shaw and Saban are the two left.

If Texas spends an extra $10mil top bring in Saban, its worth it, because of the cost of getting the wrong guy in the program, Saban knows Mack and Saban probably doesn't want to have to deal with most of the big donors. Saban has known Luck since they were both at WVa in the late 70s.

Someone working through the analysis and making sense of the available info is what we need. I'm curious to see how someone comes to their conclusion, even if the logic jumps because the details are based on info that can't be made public quite yet. That's diametrically opposite of saying someone inside the program has questionable ethics.

I'm not believing Saban is the guy, but if he isn't, other than Shaw, who is?
Mack needs to be as far away from here as he can get.

Hey McPhaul, I just pm'd you to get your thoughts on Hey-Zeus' and grande cohiba's, from TOS, newest HC possibility/in-play. Your thoughts most welcomed.

Whoever the now coach is, I can't see him coming in, building his staff, getting the recruiting worked out, working on installing his system AND dealing with the big donors WITHOUT the AD able to help.

Stop and think for a moment just how much the new AD is going to have to deal with. The UT job isn't just a matter of being handed the reins and taking charge. The new guy is going to have to totally rebuild the admin staff, find a new men's basketball coach, a new women's coach and probably hire between 100 to 150 new people. I don't see how anyone handles that job and also manages to spend extensive time building relationships with donors and, in addition, is able to help the new football coach to any significant degree. Getting all this wrong would have disastrous effects on the program. The scale and scope of the job are unmatched in college sports.

Getting petty and allowing egos to run crazy isn't going to cut it while the athletic program is rebuilt. The next few years are going to be incredibly important. Darrell was banished after he left for 20 years, until Mack brought him back to be involved with the program. I hope egos are kept in check while the new AD gets in and gets the situation under control. If not, this could turn into one ugly shit show.

Mack could hurt the situation as much as he could help it. Mack does not want to be relieved of being the HC at Texas. He could finish the year 7-5 and still want to come back. If he is not going to return it wont be because Mack wants to leave. That means when another guy comes in, Mack SHOULD NOT BE AROUND. This has nothing to do with Royal. We are not banishing Mack for 20 years but he needs to be away bc he could meddle negatively.

This!

The new coach doesn't have to come in and suck up to the BMD's to keep his job. He coaches the team, kicks ass, and gets us to the playoffs. Let Mack play golf or work for ESPN.

Duke it has been a shit show for several years now in ALL the Big Three programs on campus. Where have You been? All this did not just happen this year. We have some programs that have been "coached" right in to the ground, and a AD that has us glued in a shit Conference for the next dozen years or so. But "we are the Jones', and we will finish this".

Duke, DKR was certainly not banished from UT. He sat at many a game with Mike Campbell and my Dad. He did keep a low profile and remained hugely disappointed Coach Campbell didn't follow him as head Coach.

McPhaul, does hiring Patterson give us a better chance with Saban than would Luck?

I think the Steve Patterson story today shows that no one knows anything. It's all rumors until the ink is on the paper and announcements are made. Even the Steve Patterson story may be false.
