A Home Runhire with ties to Texas -- OC -- Who fits that description?

Another name: Seth Littrell

Indiana OC and TE/FB coach -- Coached RB at Texas Tech from 2005-2008, Graduated from OU

frost is no home run hire...he barely his first year as an OC, and im not even sure he was even calling plays...

if its home run hire with ties to texas...2 names and only 2 names...morris or shannahan...

everybody else is short of a home run...herman is warning track material, but not homerun

Kyle Shanahan would be the out of left field home run hire. Played WR at Texas, and has coached some dynamic offenses in the NFL. The Texans offense was never the same in the RZ after he left to go coach with his dad.

Does shanahan have experience with the spread?
option read with some spread attack and loves to attack downfield...

young and innovative...would be a great pair with wickline IMO

I'd be more intrigued with the passing game he would bring to Texas. If it could be anything like what the Texans had in their prime with guys running wide open all over the place, would be fun to watch.

A lot of great posts here...I like them all....But they make too much sense...but sometimes it doesn't happen the way we see it...

I personally think that Strong has/will hold off on naming the OC because he waiting to see if his man Watson gets hired by any of the 4 NFL teams(cough)...That would make it easier for all of us....Watson then disappears and Strong can then hire a real OC/QB coach with Big XII type offense experience...

We don't like Watson for two reasons.....Poor coaching background experience for the Big XII type offense that Strong wants to install AND the character issue of him abusing Colt...Dont need to go further there...

I hope Watson goes......anywhere but Texas, Strong could then hire any of the coaches listed here, and we would all be on board...

Just an old man wishing.........

Tom Herman has Texas tiesTexas ( GA )

Texas Lutheran ( WR )

Sam Houston St ( WR )

Texas St ( OC )

Rice ( OC )

That's a lot of Texas ties and he's coached and played WR I'm just saying.

Getting excited bring on Tom Herman.

And I forgot all the players Ohio St are recruiting from Texas Herman's name is next to it.
buice...

I like Herman also. This is strange, but I read post on one the other sites that said Herman would take the job, but that he was never offered the job......

Strange.....or was it just smoke.....

I personally believe we could be hiring just about anybody at this point for the OC position:
RB: Porter is staying. No, Applewhite can do it. No, it is Strong's guy from Louisville. The winner: Robinson and that wasn't a name anyone I saw mention.

WR: Wyatt is staying. No, it's Joker. Applewhite can do it. TBD

OL: Everyone and their mother wanted Wickline and you heard his name mentioned. People also said Searles was staying. Perhaps this one shouldn't be used as an example.

DL; Giles is staying. Orgeron is coming, was seen in Austin. Nope, its Rumph. Noone saw it.

LB: BJM was announced early.

DB: Akina. Gray. Bedford. Nope, its Vaughn. Noone saw it.

Does anyone notice a trend here?

We have all seen the Morris, Herman, Frost, Kyle S., Riley candidates thrown around, and it is possible this goes down like the OL position, but let's think of some big names, and it must be big for Watson to be the QB coach (IMO)...

How about?

Mike Sherman -- Ties to Texas

Gary Kubiak -- Ties to Texas

Mike Shanahan -- Strong & Mike were GA's at Florida (not confirmed) and not sure there are any ties to Texas outside of Kyle

Who else fits that description? A home run hire with ties to Texas...
I started another thread and then saw this. I agree it could be anyone. And Strong said he was looking for someone with ties doesn't mean he said that person would absolutely have ties. Here's a list of coordinators I have not seen discussed that I think would all be solid to splash options although their ties to Texas vary:

Based on the hiring so far, many of the hires were names that weren't being discussed before hand. What if that's the case with offensive coordinator as well? Here are some decent OC's that I haven't seen discussed much. Any thoughts on any of these being a potential target?

Phillip Montgomery

Dave Schramm

Seth Littrell

Dan Werner

Jimmy Dougherty

Rhett Lashlee

James Coley

None of these seem crazier than Lincoln Riley as an option. Thoughts anyone?

It looks like it may be Joker Phillips. .
Yeah Joker is getting alot of traction on the interweb. He has experience running an up tempo offense? I think Strong's definition of up tempo and mine (or anyone who watches Big XII football) is different.

Morris or Riley....I like Riley due to age, knows the stae of Texas and a h*** of a spread offense.

Simple,

Pay Morris' buyout, give him a buyout here...lets' say:

$10 mil after 1 yr

$7.5 mil after 2

$5 mil after 3

$2.5 after 4

These #'s of course are just an example and can be negotiated. Then you pay him like the Home Run hire he is:

1.5 yr 1

1.6 yr 2

1.7 yr 3

1.9 yr 4

Franklin made 2.7 this year @ Vandy

Dabo made a little over 2.0 mil at Clemson

According to USA Today, Morris is making more (1.3 mil) than half of the Head Coaches in FBS and more than 41 teams entire Asst Coaches pool.

If we hire him and he helps us win a Championship or 2 then it is money well spent. The large buyouts that I suggest will scare off the middle of the pack Schools and the Salary will scare off the smaller Schools.

After 4 years, hopefully someone can step up and and the Machine that The University of Texas would have become will just keep purring.

The number one issue that I have right now is the fact that this is taking sooooooooooooo long to name an OC...

There are only a handful of reasons for this to be happenning...

(1) Candidate is up for a HC position in college (ie Morris)

(2) Candidate is up for a OC/HC position in the NFL (ie Shanahan, Sherman, Kubiak)

(3) Candidate is still playing in the NFL playoffs (doesn't fit other rumors, but possible)

(4) Buyout issues (Morris)

I really don't see any other possibilities as to why we haven't announced an OC yet. Guys like Riley, Mazzone, Groh, Joker, etc. would all be named already and there wouldn't be a delay of sorts...

I really think it is down to Morris & Shanahan. I think that is the complete list. Of course, I ran out of quarters and didn't hear everything Ms. Halliburton was saying on the phone call...

This is obviously going to sound really random, but how about WVU's Shannon Dawson. He had a great year in 2012 with WVU, was amazing at Stephen F. Austin (TX ties), has a system along the lines of what Strong seems to be looking for, and would certainly be in line with the "out of nowhere" pattern.
Maybe not a headline home run hire... but I think this is actually a really good choice. Dawson's time at SFA was indeed very impressive... and he has had a couple of years to pick up things from Holgerson.
