I just read this on IT from one of our poster's, Horns82, that played for DKR that is a must read:

A Former Letterman's Thoughts

Please understand that if Coach Strong walked over to me and introduced himself at a former Letterman's function, it would be the first time for me to ever meet the man. I don't know him at all, other than what I've been reading about him. In other words, there is no pro or con bias established regarding our new coach or myself. Still, if you don't mind, let me share some thoughts.

So many of our Longhorn faithful apparently do not like this hire for a myriad of reasons. Just reading some of the posts on here clearly provides that type of feedback. Do many of them tick me off...the negative feedback? You better believe they do. However, this is a format where all can give their opinion, good or bad, and I totally respect that. So many are well written, thought provoking points of view totally divergent to what my thoughts were on the subject, and therefore causes me to look at something in a different light. That's a good thing. So many are just pure hatred and used in such a negative tone that it astonishes me.

A year or two ago I read an amazing book...The Lone Survivor...written by a fellow Texan about his journey to becoming a Navy Seal to his near death in the mountains of Afghanistan. The movie just came out last week. Go see it, it's not bad, and if you are the type to read, get the book and read it, it's unbelievable. How does this relate to my Longhorns? Marcus Luttrell talks about how the training breaks down those attempting to become a seal into three parts....the physical, the mental, & the emotional. Each stage is pure hell, and I doubt one is more difficult than the other. If, at the end of the process, you are still standing and have become a Navy Seal, you are the very best of the best. It's amazing what those guys can do & accomplish when the mind would be telling most of us to just surrender, and the body aches & pains & broken backs & being shot simply does not matter...they will continue to come at you till the last breath.

This living in the dorm till you have earned the right to move away...I have no problem with. We did it until our eligibility was up...in other words, we could move out the 2nd semester of our SENIOR year. We didn't do too bad with that rule...we won the Southwest Conference all four years I played ball there, and we won two National Championships.

This being forced to wear a suit & tie on away trips...we had to do the same thing. When you represent the Univ of Texas and it's fine football tradition, and others are looking for any reason to hate us, well it's nice to look like you care, to look like you are a team of well represented young men. They'll survive this, trust me.

Can't toss the 'horns up' sign till you've earned it? I have no problem with that. When we were freshman and only played a 5 game freshman schedule while being ineligible for the Varsity team, we had to wait till all were seated every night at dinner...not in the lobby, but outside in the hot August & September sun...till they opened up the side doors to 'allow' us in singing the Eyes of Texas & Texas Fight before we ever sat down to eat, before we were ever called over to sing our high school song, or introduce yourself to the upper classman and then recall each one personally before being allowed to finally go sit down and eat. When did we play our first game? The 2nd week of October! That's a lot of time outside and doing menial things till we won our first game. We had to EARN that right to come in like every one else. We did alright, it didn't kill us or demean us...it actually gave us a strong sense of pride. These boys under Strong will learn that things are not just given, they must be earned. I support that!

So many of the things that coach Strong is implementing are done so to break these young, entitled men down before building them back up. Everyone needs to chill and let the process weed out the weak. Trust me, those players already know who is there just to be there, and not all in...they know this already, and they will welcome the opportunity to run those off. You're only as strong as the weakest link.

Give this new staff the benefit of the doubt, I have a feeling they will be united and will make better men of these young fellows before it's all over.

You can have the best offense in the world, or the best schemes on defense than 90% of the other teams, and all that won't mean squat IF the players aren't united, aren't prepared, aren't superiorly in shape, and mentally tough enough to come through when it's the fourth quarter and you need that big drive or that big stop in order to win the game. It's all about the players buying in and supporting one another, gentleman.

We haven't had that in quite a while. We've had zero accountability. Now I have a feeling we will, and this is one former Longhorn letterman that supports the new changes. I hope you will give this new regime a chance to make men of these boys, and I feel the results will come on the field as well. In due time, maybe not this coming fall, but in due time.

Hook 'Em!!

An excellent post indeed. I'm ecstatic about the changes that Strong is making for the program. As I said in another post, it's clear that Strong wants to be remembered as a Coach who molded men, rather than just a Coach who won some games. Texas should be considered one of the classier programs in the country and Coach Strong is doing what he can to help fill that image. It's not going to be easy to play under him for a while. Practices will be brutal and unrelenting. But for those who come out of those practices that are still wearing that jersey, they're going to be operating at a level of physical and mental skill that they never knew they possessed. We may not attract all of the Five Star players we're use too because some of them will want to be treated with delicate hands. But what we will attract are the men who want nothing more than to suit up in the burnt orange and play their heart out for the chance at a National Championship. And personally, I'd rather have that any day.

My response to the OP on IT (Horns82)

Absolutely outstanding post 82! I completely agree with and appreciate your 1st hand account and tie in to what Coach Strong is implementing. I also recognized the concept of it as a rites of passage type of program that many cultures utilize to transition boys into men. Lastly, having gone through basic military training, I can identify with and appreciate the need to tear down the "I" mentality and build a solid "We" foundation.

I also agree that this would make a great Op-ed piece in the newspaper...all of them that cover the Horns.

Bravo Sir!

I like his overall message. I think the first paragraph is something that posters should understand - " I don't know him at all, other than what I've been reading about him. In other words, there is no pro or con bias established regarding our new coach"

So many posters have come up with some outlandish opinions based on some dumb ass snippet read on the internet. There is expressing your opinion, and there is ranting and raving and being condescending without any facts. There's a difference and the ranters hide behind the former. I respect, either positive or negative, an informed opinion. I do not respect an uniformed opinion. I believe the latter dominates chat boards.

I'm not of the opinion that wearing a suit and tie is of importance. I torn ill fitting T-shirt with profanity on it won't cut it, but as long as it's presentable, I don't care what they wear. This isn't the same world this gentleman played it.

I disagree that our players aren't in shape. We've have more 4th quarter wins under Mack than I can count.

I don't believe there has been 0 accountability either - that's simply not true. Fans may not like the selection, and belly ache for a change in personnel, but that's everywhere. The most popular guy is the second string player behind someone you don't like. People don't see the practices, and don't know what players can and cannot do. It's the John Chiles syndrome - until they see the second string guy really is second string.

Excellent post. I said the very same thing last week that the day of entitled soft players is over. Several people used the term 'SMH" to my post. But as the OP said even the great DKR used similar techniques. I am really excited at the direction of our football program.

But, but, when I googled Charlie Strong and his new staff the internet said he doesn't know what he's doing!

Yes it was a great post. We're all excited to instill some discipline and accountability back into the program.

But why is everyone acting like making the culture change and bringing in the best coaching talent are somehow mutually exclusive? Why do folks seem to think that the focus on discipline and accountability somehow excuses the fact that our offensive system is going to be a collection of whatever we've got in the fridge?

If we attract men of reasonable talent, put them in a kluged together offensive system and shape them into fine husbands and life insurance salesmen, that's all well and great for them, but it damn sure ain't helping my Saturday afternoons!

How is this fact, seeing how not a down of football has been practiced nor played under this "patchwork" offensive Staff? I like the assembly of experienced TEACHERS. Now, your perception that the offensive coaches are underwhelming is another thing alltogether.

Excellent post!! Thank you for your candid and informative insight! Great to have a knowledgeable reference point to go forward.

Having served in an infantry unit in the Marines I approve of this message. Football is the ultimate team sport and no matter how talented you are you must depend on the person next to you.

The "patchwork" may or may not work. As you point out, we haven't seen it play out on the field. The "patchwork" may evolve into an identifiable system over time.

But currently, it's a "patchwork".

I'm just not sure why some are just assuming the offense is going to be a mess or lack direction. I think Strong was perfectly clear what type of system and objective they will have on offense next season. One guy is calling the plays. Its not going to be 3 people all on headsets trying to call plays in games by a committee or coach the offense as 3 sep guys who have their own agendas and ideas what system Texas should have. I've heard nothing to indicate there wont be a clear direction and design on offense of what they want to do. Time will tell how successful it is, but I also heard nothing yesterday to suggests Texas is going to be a 10-14 point a game...slow pace grind it out type of offense either
