5 Thoughts following the biggest win in Charlie Strong's tenure

This article serves to inform you that what you saw really just happened.  The Texas Longhorns stunned Notre Dame 50-47 in double overtime.  We bring you five thoughts following an electric victory in Austin.

1. Welcome to the new age

The Shane Buechele era begins, and the freshman was sensational when it counted tonight.  He made some freshman mistakes, but he showed brass balls and composure beyond his years.  Buechele operated the offense with a surgical passing game, and strong decision making skills.  As with any young player, he will have some lows throughout his growth, but how about this performance to start your career.  Buechele entered the evening standing on the edge of history as the first true freshman to start since Bobby Layne.  He finished the game 16-26, 280 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.  The most impressive thing was his good decision making when the pressure mounted most.

2. Let's not forget about the other quarterbacks

Tyrone Swoopes could have been down about not winning the starting job, but he came prepared to carry the team when they needed it most with the 18 wheeler package.  Texas was the more physical team on the field against a pretty good defensive line, and Swoopes was all heart near the end.  Speaking of heart, how about D'Onta Foreman and the performance he put on.  The duo of Foreman and Warren are very strong, but I think it's clear that Foreman is the alpha in the pack.  While we're talking about quarterbacks, how about Jerrod Heard sparking Texas with a huge deep ball in the first half?  The buy in for players on this team is indicative of their love and devotion to their head coach.

3. F-I-N-I-S-H

Texas had so many issues last season finishing these type of games last season, but they were never out of the fight tonight.  The team could have folded after Notre Dame roared back to take the lead, but the calm hand at the helm from the quarterback and head coach inspired strong performances from less heralded guys like Chris Nelson, Jacorey Warrick, Jake Oliver, and countless others.   Though this doesn't signal a total comeback for Texas, this crew knows they have the stuff to win games with a ton of grit.  Charlie's young guys are growing up,and his older players have bought in to the system.

4.  The defense is better but...

They still have a long way to go.  It was inspiring to see the defense finally get off the field on third down, but there was plenty of room for improvement.  The most disappointing aspect of the night was a bit of regression from Davante Davis.  Davis gave up two touchdowns on blown coverage mistakes, and was generally not the difference maker we think he can be.  Texas will need a better effort from the secondary in the coming weeks in order to compete in the high octane Big 12.  There were also some moments in the third that looked a lot like the malaise the team experienced out of the half started to creep back in.  The team should celebrate, but there will be plenty to coach on during film sessions.

5. Sterlin Gilbert ladies and gentlemen

There's some room for schematic improvement, but I thought the new offensive coordinator was a shot of life for this program.  Gilbert mixed and matched the quarterbacks well, and he dialed up th eright plays at the right time.  Notre Dame isn't as strong of a team as they were last season, but that's a damn good performance to build on.  This offense is designed for guys like D'Onta Foreman to chew up big yardage, and Gilbert pulled the right levers to keep the offense from going stagnant.  Texas fans have to be excited for what is in store.

Bonus

How about a big hand for the crowd in attendance.  That atmosphere looked incredible from tv, and the monster list of recruits in attendance had to love it.  If you think Texas recruited well the last two years, let Charlie have a successful season and enjoy the results.

Buechele is clutch. I was very happy for not only the win, but that Swoopes was the first interview on ABC after the game.

I thought no way we win after blocked PAT. I didn't think we would be mentally tough enough to overcome that, but we did.

Great win and great day to be a longhorn!

Special teams need work too.  Punting was terrific; punt coverage, not so much.  And we never adjusted to the middle screen. That 1-play TD in the 1st OT was crap.

Good Stuff Mike!

Trying to comprehend everything that went on tonight. Fantastic win and a heck of a way for this team to open the season.

There is still plenty to work on after this win, but Texas hung 50 on a team they were barely able to put 3 on last year. Shane Buechele showed poise beyond his years, but I couldn't be happier for Tyrone Swoopes after what he has been through over the past year. The kid has fully embraced his role on the team and is running with it.

This game completely changes the overall outlook for the season. 24 hour rule is strictly in effect, enjoy the win then get ready for UTEP.

The key games coming up are Cal, Okie St, and OU. IMHO, they keep knocking heads and continue to improve, well let's just say the Dome will break

Mike and Daniel, I can't wait to read yalls reports, Inside info. and such about what this means and just did for recruiting.

Well Slimer? If anything with the recruiting aspect it changes everything,

The team proved they can win. Now they have to prove they can win consistently. Great game for the first game of the season.

The OL kicked ass that's for syre
Neither line can dominate, but both showed they certainly can hold their own against high caliber opponents. Shackelford needs some experience. There were a couple of hiccups. But Buschele had plenty of time all night.
My big question is just how much of Gilbert's scheme they still have left to install. Playing as they did last night, if more of the scheme gets employed and some of the problems get ironed out, things look good.

The defense has some work to do, but last night was a solid effort.

Now, to deliver a solid effort with consistency. Charlie is still 12-14 at Texas. There is a lot of work left to be done, but the big weaknesses seem to be in much better shape.

I think the defense has more work to be done. And we are looking at a young team that all need experience not just Shackleford. He will get better in time. Now having said that the big test from last night was to overcome the challenges that they faced with a high caliber team like Notre Dame that in itself was HUGE. They played with emotion as I expected. Those three games as I mentioned above are the ones to watch closely just to see what happens

I loved the Energy that was shown by the team and fans which was seen by every household in America last night and for those recruits who attended the game you know that closed the deal for getting them to the 40 Acres.  I thought the fast pace of the offense was exactly what was needed and I know Gilbert is the OC and much of the credit goes to him and it is very much deserved I have to give a shout out to Assistant Coach Jeff Traylor who implemented the speed tempo of this offense which is exactly how fast he did it when at Gilmer.  One last shout out to our players who all look stronger and faster which I applaud your hard work and dedication during the off season just a fantastic job. Coach Strong thank you and HOOK'EM!

It was the 1st game of the year, so they will definitely improve. They have now proven that they can get it done. Now everyone involved wity the program needs to show consistency. That means administration, coaches, players and fans. There is nobreason going forward for anyone to get complacent, fans included. The corowd was rocking ladt night. I know the UTEPs of the world, dont get the hype of a Note Dame, but this is a toung team and they need the crowd to be involved heavily. Good job by everyone last night. Let's keep it going.
