Centered near La Habra; hit about 9 PM. Hope all of our SoCal HS folks are doing OK.
A 5.1-magnitude earthquake struck near La Habra at 9:09 p.m. Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey. The magnitude was downgraded after preliminarily being reported as 5.3.
The epicenter of the temblor, which occurred at a depth of 1.2 miles, was located one mile east of La Habra, three miles southwest of Rowland Heights and four miles north of Fullerton, the USGS said.
The quake was preceded at 8:03 p.m. by a 3.6-magnitude foreshock in the same area, according to the Geological Survey.
“It was felt pretty much throughout the populated part of Southern California,” said Caltech seismologist Dr. Kate Hutton. The 5.1-magnitude was the largest in a sequence of about 20 quakes that hit the area Friday night, she said.
Hutton said the number of incidents was “actually pretty expected for a magnitude 5.1 earthquake. You might have the foreshock, you might not. In this case there was one. And there should be aftershocks after the earthquake. It’s a continuation of strain release.”
She added that the epicenter was not “on an obvious fault.”
La Habra City Councilman James Gomez said the quake lasted “20 to 30 seconds” and “shook rather violently.”
Work crews were responding to reports of a power outage in an area of the city, Gomez said. Elsewhere in the La Habra, Sky5 video showed firefighters responding to a flooded street in after a water main ruptured.

“Here in La Habra it was a fast, hard, shallow jolt,” Cyndi Turner said on Facebook, referring to the earlier tremor.
Others on social media reported feeling both quakes in downtown Los Angeles, West Covina, Montclair, La Mirada and Whittier.
Friday’s tremors occurred less than two weeks after a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck near Beverly Hills on March 17.
