4 or 5 star recruiting

I think a lot of people have gotten pretty caught up in the whole 4 or 5 star system.

Saban gets a lot of 4 and 5 star recruits. But he also gets 2 or 3 start recruits. So how does HE choose?

He finds the 2 and 3 star FOOTBALL players. The 4 and 5 stars become interested because of the exposure and success.

It is a lot easier to get athletes when you are ranked in the top 5 every year. When you are a 5 star recruit, you have heard

everything from every coach trying to sell you on their school. But you pay attention to the guy who always at the top.

Coach Strong will have a lot easier time recruiting when the W's start compiling. Let's be honest. A&M has stole some good recruits

from us. They caught lightning in a bottle with Manziel and got the spotlight in the state. But after two or three consecutive

Chik-Fil-A bowl appearances, the shiny will wear off. It is an easier path to the NC through the Big 12. You have a great rivalry in OU.

Alabama has Auburn and LSU fro fantastic rivalries. A&M has................Missouri? I mean they would love to have a big rivalry with Alabama,

but you have to beat them constantly to do that. They considered us their big rival except we had a bigger one with OU.

I want Coach Strong to look into the soul of a kid and find the grittiest, edgiest kids there are. His job is to take a 3 or 4 star recruit and turn

them into a 5 star player.

Aggy has played Alabama a grand total of 6 times in the history of their program, less than they have played Mississippi St. Aggy just has somehow found people who can spin the truth in a way that people believe whatever they say about their program, so selling recruits on the image of a great annual rivalry game against Alabama is working for them. Meanwhile, we are telling ESPN how much we love the "Stronghorn" monicker because someone in Bellmont is explaining to ESPN how much it speaks to what our program is about. Texas isn't losing on the field as much as we are losing off the field.

I agree with your statement about Texas losing off the field. The Forbes story and others like it is nice and I look forward to reading them each year but it's not about the money. To me it's about the perception of a 17-18 year old kid. My family has a lunch each year at my Mother's house on New Years Day. I have two nephews that are old enough to have opinions that matter. One plays baseball at UTA and the other is a Junior in high school. The A&M-Duke game was brought up in conversation and they both thought it was the greatest game ever. It drove me crazy but that is a popular view with a lot of kids. I don't know if it's because they grew up playing video games or more participation of schools and a bigger spotlight on 7 on 7 in the off-season. I know that moving to the SEC and Johnny Manziel helped them a great deal. Enough with the aggie though, I do believe that if Texas wins, we get the recruits. It may not ever be as easy as it was in the past but thats okay, nothing wrong with having to work for your recruits. Which leads me to Alabama.

You are right, Alabama does get 3 stars each year, this year they took five, one of which was a kicker, the #3 kicker in the nation. A lot of times the ranking system is not as accurate as we would like it to be for many reasons. The kid might not have played his junior year or maybe he didn't go to camps, maybe he is a late bloomer. The majority of recruits for Alabama are some of the best in the country. They have 24 commits for this class and are still working hard on some of the best in the nation. Out of the 24 commits they have 11 high school kids that are in the top 100 in the nation. They also have a few Juco players, something I hope to see UT doing a little more in the future. The 3 Juco's are ranked the #1 OT,#2DT and #2SDE in the country at the Juco level. Some of the high school players they have are #1 & #6OT, #1 & #2OC, #1SDE, #2ATH, #2CB with a good chance at getting the #3CB, #3 and #6 OLB, #4PS QB, and the #5 safety. If you look at Bama's class last year which was #1 in the country, it goes very well with this class as far as making up for what they didn't get last year.

I guess my point is that there is nothing wrong with 3 stars and 2 stars and I know that Coach Strong had to make a living on those kids at Lousiville. He did get his 4 stars and Teddy was 5 star that went to a 4 star but he usually didn't get the top recruits. I know from his time at Florida that he would rather have the top recruits. He is at Texas now and that means that he will have recruits talking to him that wouldn't pick the phone up before. That's not a insult at Coach Strong that is just stating a fact that UT is one of 5-10 schools that when they call you listen, doesn't mean they all come but he has a better shot now than he had before. Of course they have to buy in to his system and his way of thinking but he will also have to sell them on himself and his staff. I want Coach Strong to find the best kids in the country and coach them up, along with the under rated recruits that are there each year but not rated high for some reason or another and coach them up as well.

We can't afford to not worry about getting the best recruits and being happy with 2 and 3 stars and expect to coach those kids up as much as other coaching staffs are coaching up 4 and 5 stars.

I am going to stop now, sorry for such a long post and don't want anyone to think that I disagree with anyone's feelings about ranking recruits. Recruiting is one of my favorite subjects in college sports and I hope that I didn't offend anyone.
