2017 Recruiting Thread Part 1

JUCO DT Brandon Henderson did not receive an offer

Likely means we have or think we have someone else we are after

However, it does not sound like that person is JUCO DT Larrell Murchison.  He got an offer from Georgia and the thought is Georgia now leads

CB Chevin Calloway has cancelled his last OV to Ole Miss after visiting ARK

They say JUCO DT Brandon Henderson will commit if offered this weekend

He has a prior relationship with Giles

Powers (natl guy) thinks Chaisson is trending slightly to LSU (but he admits he doesnt really know)

Holland, who follows Texas much closer than Powers, thinks Texas did enough to keep him.

I think we get Chaisson, doesn't seem like the staff is even after any other OLB's. LSU is the one going hard after other OLB's like Willie Gay and M. Bryant .

Eric over at IT said this morning Texas still has a slight lead but his tone was not as confident as in the past.

I have no knowledge input other than what I read on a couple of Horn related web sites but my sense is we' are Not presently attracting the better quality players.  I feel this is due to our dismal record during the last few years. The kids seem to enjoy our hospitality & post their "Texas" offer, but fail to commit.  If I were Herman, rather than take kids I feel are a "reach", I might consider telling the recruits, either commit or we will move on and possibly save our scholarships for next year when I sincerely believe we will have a better win/loss record.  If next season we get decent qb play I think we can get by with the talent we presently have on hand and then try to "load the boat."

This...I feel the same way. I dont think we are going to get any of the top choices, so I am all for "saving" those valuable scholarships for next year when they will bring a much better return.

By the way, I have NO doubt in my mind that we will have a much improved record this year

Bad previous record, different coach recruiting in a familiar polo, or a familiar coach recruiting in a different polo than you saw him in last time. These all add up to why Herman and co aren't hitting as big as we'd want. The thing is, it is to be expected. A lot of us went into this recruiting season expecting even less than what we've seen so far. To be honest, I believe they've exceeded what I thought they'd be able to do, just because my expectations were so low.

I will say, though, that this staff cannot ignore the big star athletes. These athletes all follow each other on twitter etc..., and these guys tweeting and retweeting the good times they're having in Austin with this staff is publicity. In the new age of recruiting, you have to be out there like this.

Interesting thoughts.

One thing Charlie did do for us, is leave a rather balanced team.  Though I believe the current talent level may be a bit over-rated; it is difficult to find a position in desperate need.  This gives Coach Herman some room to play with in a year which the deck is really stacked against him with regard to the top rated kids who can go just about anywhere they want to.

My best case realistic scenario for this year was that Herman would fill the spots with "projects."  In other words, kids with something he really likes (size, speed, motor, etc...) who might not be as highly ranked.  Thanks to Charlie's recruiting, C Herman is afforded this luxury.  Furthermore, I was looking for C.H. to maybe raid the JUCOs for immediate depth at a key area or two.

In both cases I believe Herman has done just as I had hoped.  Kicker was an incredible immediate need (the one area C.S. neglected) and ILB was a great pickup that will allow Malik to move back to his more natural position.  Beyond that are a bunch of kids that the staff liked enough to recruit at UH.  I believe 2018 is when we begin grading Herman's chops as a recruiter at Texas.

LSU 247 mods think they get Marivn WIlson and hold on to Kay VIncent. They are extremely confident about Chaisson this morning as well.

I'm confident in Herman, but this still sounds like a bunch of excuses to me.
