On if this is a dire situation for Texas recruiting at the moment, with the Longhorns ranked below TCU, Baylor, Oklahoma and Texas Tech in the Big 12 rankings, according to Scout.com:
Brooks: "I think right now that the rankings, again signing day is almost upon us, but they might be a little misleading in the sense that Texas has, I believe, 12 to 15 prospects that they are in serious contention for, who are announcing on national signing day. They have, I believe, 13 commitments right now, and there's a real possibility they could wind up with 25 actual signees. Now that would take, obviously, a huge signing-day push, but if you look at all the guys who are in play for them who are announcing on national signing day, it's not out of the realm of possibility."
Horn: Do you recall any other situation that's comparable to this where a school has made a giant leap on signing day?
Brooks: "Well you know every year there's certain schools that will make a late push. Florida State has always been considered a team to do that. LSU and Alabama are usually very good late, but those are teams that are good early and good late. I don't know if I can think of a school getting double-digit guys on the actual national signing day. If Texas were to do that, that would be -- I don't know if unprecedented is the word, somebody who has been doing it longer than I would have a better idea -- but it would be, to call it a coup would probably be an understatement."
Sherrington: If they get all these guys, best-case scenario, what do they leap up to? Top 10? Top 5?
Brooks: "Top 10. I believe our guy at HornsDigest, which is our Texas site, they've been number crunching, and if they get a big majority of those guys who are in play on signing day, they believe it will be a top-10 class. Texas, they weren't in quite the situation last year that they're in now, but it was somewhat similar and they did make a very late push in January and on signing day to get in the top 10 last year. So I think what it is for a lot of both Texas fans and media who have covered Texas for so many years, the strategy that Charlie Strong's staff -- that they employ in recruiting -- is very different than Mack Brown. And a lot of that is a very different approach when it comes to when you take guys, how you evaluate guys and when you take commitments and all that kind of stuff.

Sherrington: "One of the big points that I was making in this column was that in Texas, if everything goes best-case scenario with Charlie and they do have a great class, then good for them. But the difference this year, or what it certainly seems to be, is the likes of Baylor and TCU have been beating Texas, though Texas beat Baylor this year when they were down to their fourth-string quarterback, even with that course of developments over the past few years, they were doing that with classes ranked in the 30s and the 40s. Now they are having classes, at least they are right now, that are ranked 10, 15, right around there. That's a huge leap for TCU. What are they going to do if all of a sudden they are getting players who are that caliber."
Brooks: "Well I think they're just going to continue doing what they're doing, and as you've seen in the last year and this year when those teams are healthy, they are national contenders. And I think, as you referenced, they had classes that were ranked lower than you'd expect teams that are winning double-digit games. But what TCU and Baylor, (Gary) Patterson and (Art) Briles, something that they're known for in recruiting is being very good at finding guys that nobody else finds.
"A perfect example is Travin Howard from Longview. A safety who was going to go to UTSA, that was his only FBS offer. And late in the process TCU offers him and scoops him away from UTSA and here he is, they've moved him to one of those undersized, kind of space-backer positions at TCU and he's thriving. Shock Linwood is a perfect example of that at Baylor. He only had a couple of offers. I believe TCU and Baylor were his only Power Five offers. Both of those are East-Texas guys. Howard from Longview, Linwood from Linden there. That region, especially Baylor and TCU d a really good job of finding guys who are off the beaten path, so to speak, and they develop them and they turn out being a lot better than people thought that they may be coming out of high school just because they're not playing for Allen or Euless Trinity of a more visible high school program."

On Brandon Jones, the fifth-rated prospect in the state of Texas, who could sign with Texas:
Brooks: "If they're going to make a big push and a potential top-10 push, he is going to be a key piece. He is, we have five five-stars in Texas this cycle, and he's the fifth one. He's our No. 1 safety in the country for the 2016 class."
