2015 Recruiting Season is in full swing

Sorry if already answered but there was some talk about Clarington being able to qualify, but reports are that he will. I believe Gilbert Johnson still has to take the ACT and get a high enough score to qualify. Also there are some rumors that Ronnie Major may not qualify. Those are the only names I have heard so far. 

Clarrington was cleared already. That was in the Humidor this evening. Johnson is still an unknown right now.

Incidently, Auburn is STILL putting the full court press on Tim Irvin. This time, time is on Texas' side. Irvin is to be in Austin on the 12th and the dead period doesn't end until the 16th.

I'm guessing it's because we haven't recruited Fields that long, but it seems like people on other boards don't comprehend how big of a pickup Mark Fields would be. The dude is the #55 player in the country per 247 and is suppose to get a significant ranking bump here pretty soon. To put it in perspective, Fields will be teetering on the edge of being a 5 star at the end of this recruiting process.  

I think there's this perception that we are automatically taking Boyd and Hill over Fields. Maybe we take all 3, but if Fields is available and there's only 2 DB spots Boyd or Hill are going to be the odd man out IMO.

Is there a limit on how many grey shirts a team can take per year? That could be another possibility for him. You can never have enough speed. 

To my knowledge, no there isn't. In the event that a school oversigns in a class, meaning more than 25, they're expected to grey-shirt some players. Grey-shirting simply means that player can't be associated with the team until January of the following year, where they'll be counted against the 25 scholarships the team has to work with the next year. For example, Texas offered Matthew Merrick a grey shirt and he accepted. Thus, he'll count against our 2016 scholarships rather than our 2015 scholarships. So as long as you stay within the 85 eligible scholarship players you're allowed on a team, you're fine to grey-shirt as many players as you like.

I was looking at some Mark Fields stats -- pretty exciting stuff

HUDL shows a 40 time for Fields of 4.33 

I think they are using his time at The Opening in Oregon where he won the "Fastest Man" competition

247 reports him at 4.40

While ESPN & Rivals say 4.5 --  I think these two are using Fields' time at the Charlotte SPARQ camp where he did run a 4.5 but was also rated 3rd best overall athlete.  His nice showing at that SPARQ is what got him into The Opening

And, at The Opening, which is an elite event, he beat everyone in the 40

Looks like 4-star CB Xavier Lewis (Reserve, LA) will take an OV to Texas

Either Jan 16th or Jan 30

Currently committed to LSU

Coaching staff continued to bring in the 4-star DBs.

I have (seemingly forever) been assuming 6 total DBs for this class

We are at 4 now with 3 safeties and 1 CB.  Adding 2 CBs puts us at 6 (2 from among Hill, Boyd, Fields, right?)

However, with who we have left on the board and the visits we are still setting up, maybe 7 is possible?

Look at who we are still bringing in at DB -- Hill, Baker, Fields, Lewis, Redwine and presumedly Boyd at some point.

That is 6 total DBs --  four 4-stars and two 3-stars

It is late in the game, we are not just doing this for entertainment. Or to waste ours and their time.  In terms of positions on the field, the amount of DBs set to visit swamp any other position.

Conclusion?  7 DBs doesn't sound so crazy.  It looks like Strong/Bedford are tailoring their defense.

It is not unheard of -- for example, Alabama is at 7 now themselves and actively recruiting No. 8 (who would be Holton Hill)

I knew he was legit when I saw how early the old ball coach offered him. Spurrier isn't big on offering early and he offered Fields pretty early, back in 2013. Boyd and Hill are damn good DB prospects, but they aren't Fields athletically. I still think it's a long shot that we land Fields, but boy oh boy that would be some type of recruiting victory for Strong. Outside of Malik that would probably be the biggest pickup of this class.

Getting both RBs Brossette and Warren would be freakin sweet

One possibility is moving Kirk Johnson (6'0,200) to the slot.  He is talented enough for either position.

Then adding both Warren and Brosette would still leave you at 3 RBs for this class

IMO, three RBs is the bare minimum for this class, given our depth chart

So, doing it this way would give us 3 plus a potential swing player (4th RB if necessary)

That would leave the 2015 WR class looking like - John Burt, DeAndre McNeal, Gilbert Johnson and Kirk Johnson (no relation)

Or, if not Burt, then those 3 plus one of Strickland, Locksley or Lodge?  Or perhaps plus none.

Even without Burt, Johnson & Johnson + McNeal is adding a lot of talent and versatility to our sad offense.  But we definitely need G.Johnson to qualify -- we need his length

That leaves two open spots, in theory, to be used for the best remaining available prospects on the board or for players Texas would like to add.

This where the group of Mark Fields, Deandre Baker and the rest of the defensive back crop comes into plays, as well Ryan Newsome, Nick Brossette, Drew Richmond, Carlos Strickland Soso Jamabo, Damarkus Lodge, or someone else the staff greatly values. The bottom line is when you start breaking it down, it becomes clear there just simply aren't enough scholarships to go around to everyone on the wish list when position needs have to be filled.

Read somewhere that warren wants to announce on signing day... The only good thing about this is if he picks us, it will be another national highlight for all of the 2016 class to see. The HS allstar games provided a good amount of positive exposure for the program.
