SOSO JAMABO

Texas is "checking the pulse" on the super talented Plano West running back. Here's what I know about his situation.

UT would prefer him as an athlete but would offer as a running back, if it does offer.

He's cooled on A&M immensely. Not surprising, they refuse to run the ball even when it's time to put the game away versus a vastly inferior opponent in a close game.

Baylor is still in good shape, as is UCLA. Notre Dame thought they were the outright leaders and were expecting a commitment but now they think they've faltered. OU is still thought to be the leader but they have a logjam at running back, or the exact opposite of Texas.

Jamabo always liked Texas and at one point, long ago, Texas was the clear leader. I honestly think they can make a go at it here, but if they want to, they better hurry. Once you re-establish contact, you're on the clock.

Kansas StateBaylorTCUWest VirginiaOklahoma andOklahoma State all have better records than Texas but the Longhorns still have the top-rated recruiting class in the Big 12 by Rivals.com and it further shows that Texas is still the class of that conference.

One of the major problems, though, in Big 12 recruiting even with Texas is that there is a lack of top players committed to schools in that conference. There are no five-stars committed anywhere (10 five-stars have pledged to SEC schools) and only one Big 12 program (Oklahoma) has more than five four-stars committed. Texas and West Virginia have five each. Oklahoma State (two) and TCU have a combined three four-stars in this recruiting class.

With so many Big 12 programs having outstanding seasons, one argument could be made that recruiting rankings are not everything. That is legitimate. Another argument could be made, though, that these successes will be short-lived and teams that don't recruit well won't be in the national title hunt.

Texas is 4-5 in coach Charlie Strong's first season with the Mountaineers coming to town this weekend. Only two of its five four-star commits are even from the state of Texas. The Longhorns (ranked No. 15 nationally) need to do a better job landing top talent even if they have the best class in the Big 12.

Other programs are getting it done on the field but not necessarily with the highest-level recruits and to be a national player that needs to change.

"Texas has a good brand and despite their ups-and-downs on the field they have recruited pretty well. Most of their bigger guys are mostly out-of-state commitments. Their recruiting ranking could go up if they get a couple of the top targets they're still chasing. The other side of that is that in the Big 12 you're not recruiting against a lot of national powers. In the Big 12, you have Oklahoma but not a lot of other recruiting juggernauts. You're not recruiting against Alabama and Florida State but on the other hand the first and primary goal is to win your conference. If you do that you pick up some recruiting steam and the bigger recruits will come."

"It's a Texas thing. Texas is the Big 12. People can say whatever they want and Oklahoma as well, you need one of those two programs to be a national power. These other rivalries, nobody cares about them. These other programs aren't going to be able to recruit five-stars on a national basis. Texas Tech was involved with Tyron Johnson, they still are, and then they gave up 82 points. Texas needs to be stronger in the Big 12 for that conference to be strong in recruiting."
