Cistercian Prep (Irving, TX) quarterback Matthew Merrick tells Hornsports.com that he has reached out to the Texas staff and is planning on going to Austin and checking out a practice.

Merrick also told Hornsports.com that despite not having offer, Texas is considered his front runner.

Merrick threw for 1,912 yards, 12 TD and 14 INT last season.

He currently holds two offers - Colorado State and Nevada.

Merrick just informed me he is heading to Austin to catch the practice today at 4:30.

Kid is intriguing, but doesn't appear that he'll beat you with his legs.  Not that Bridgewater ever did for Louisville.  He appears to be a "game manager" type; good arm, only runs to buy time, sees the field well, etc.

Obviously a smart kid going to a private school like Cistercian Prep.  Level of competition in that TAPPS league isn't that great.  He'd be a project.

Preferred walk-on if he loves UT?

we have a lot in common. i didn't have an offer either, yet UT was my frontrunner as well.

I understand that. But how is a preferred walk on treated differently then someone like me who would be called a scrub.
When a coach says that they want to offer you a preferred walk on spot, they are saying that they will eventually have a spot for you on the roster when school gets underway in the fall. You have been given the green light to at least be on the team during the first year and be a part of practice.

A walk on is in a much tougher situation. Colleges even at the Division I level in football have tryouts to see if you can make the team. If you are a walk on, you will be going to those tryouts to see if you are good enough to practice with the big boys throughout the entire year. You basically have a tryout to be able to be a preferred walk on.

IT reports that he said he is just under 6'3" and 185 lbs.

The reality is he is probably barely 6'2" and weighs around 175 lbs.  This is not D1 material and he is most likely suited for Jr. college to develop - if he can.

I'm concerned that UT is looking at him at all - it makes me suspect our evaluation ability.

Might as well throw greyshirt in there, Mike ... just to confuse things further!  ;)

Well, the kid's gotta have a little something if Colorado St and Nevada have offered.  Colin Kaepernick went to UN, so we shouldn't totally discount Merrick's ability.  I'm not saying he's worthy of a UT scholarship right now, but we can bring him in as a walk-on.

@ Budreaueye

A greyshirt is a player who's freshman year and scholarship isn't awarded until the spring after his senior season; ie recruit graduates in the spring of 2015, but his scholarship doesn't activate until spring '16.  SEC teams like to offer these deals with the idea that they'll lose a handful of kids every year through attrition.

Not against the rules, but definitely on the fringes if they have to cut unproductive players to make room for the greyshirts.

I like his highlights... Like his throwing motion and he moves well(no Vick, for sure, but he looks to be able to evade a bit) but I think a lot of his passes would have been picked if he played against tougher competition.
