The 1st CFP playoff game is in the books and if the ratings are an indication.. . .it's a huge success. . .

18.5 share.  .highest rated ESPN CFB game ever .. .  .

But as great as it was, still doesn't match TEXAS' record vs USC with a 21.7 rating.. . we are not only #1 but also #2 in most watched title games ever.

This game is about #3 or #4. . . can't find the total viewers number

Top Five Most Viewed BCS Championship Games

2006                            Texas vs. USC                                    35.63 million

2010                            Texas vs. Alabama                             30.78 million

2003                            Ohio State vs. Miami                          29.01 million

2007                            Florida vs. Ohio State                        28.08 million

2011                            Auburn vs. Oregon                             27.32 million   (15.3 share)

tOSU Oregon was the highest rated/largest share ESPN game ever but we remain both #1 and #2

Not surprising, but the most success of this will not be the championship game, the BCS gave us that and it was always a ratings success.  The bigger bang will be the semifinals and ultimately the quarterfinal games that will draw bigger ratings than the traditional bowl games.  i have no doubt this will turn into a ratings blockbuster playoff system, much bigger than the bowls have been.

FYI,

this year's ratings up 21% from last year. . . .forgot to add that originally. . . .

Wonder if this is for just the channel that had the game on in traditional viewing or includes the whole "Megacast"..

"ESPN as well as Ohio State scored big with the first College Football Playoff National Championship.

The network got an 18.5 overnight rating for Ohio State's 42-20 win against Oregon at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.

That is the highest metered market rating ever for ESPN and a 21% increase over last year's BCS National Championship when Florida State defeated Auburn (15.3).

The previous best of a 16.1 overnight was in 2011 when Auburn defeated Oregon for the national title."

That was from USA Today

Each rating point is equal to about 1.2 million tv households ( 120 million total TV households in the USA) so the total is estimated at to be about 22 million households watching, evidently the share was 21 ( the percentage of sets that were on at that time, 21% were watching the MNC game)

This is a little skewed.  It is true it is the largest espn audience ever but that is a cable station, not a broadcast one, it is not the most watched of football games, evidently the Cowboy game on Sunday had 2.5 times as many viewers.

The Rose Bowl from 2006 where we beat USC was about a 40% bigger audience but it was on network TV, not cable.

i still believe the playoff system will create long term huge numbers, but more for the games leading up to the NC game, ie the games that would have just been routine bowl games but now they truly mean something ie win or go home

Ohio State being tOSU had more to do with them leap-frogging BU than the Bears weak OOC schedule. Follow the TV ratings. In hindsight, the CFP committee got it right.

Vindication for them and a bitter pill for BU and TCU to swallow. I don't think UT or even OU is passed over with similar credentials. But, it's all conjecture unless you're sitting in the committee's room.

Briles is full of caca if he doesn't think his weak azzed schedule didn't hurt him.

Nor did it help hte BigXII wouldn't pick a winner . . .but tOSU's late run was nothing short of impressive.

Back to ratings. . . .as good as they were, they still didn't top TEXAS/USC . ..which holds the title of most watched CFB game.

While ESPN’s numbers are historic, they fall short of broadcast TV viewership. The 2006 Rose Bowl was seen by 35.6 million on ABC, which is owned by Disney along with ESPN.
