Chalk Talk

The most important thing to teach youth football players is to "see what you hit".  Spearing and tackling with the top of the head can lead to bad neck and spinal injuries.  I hurt my back in 8th grade doing it the wrong way and suffer from sporadic lower back spasms to this day.

I was also moved to Offense soon afterward.   <_<

Learned to put the helmet into the runner...lower back issues too. One thing I did learn correctly was to break down (lower the hips) when a runner is coming toward you. It helps to avoid arm tackling, which I see so many players doing these days.

Nice job again Coleman!

60+ years ago, I was taught to keep my head up, put it in front of the runner, and use the shoulder pads to hit him hard, while wrapping him up. Tackling head on with one's head down will lead to injuries. And sometimes misses.

Of course, we didn't have very good helmets back then. LOL
