US Open

Fowler^ with shades of Payne Stewart at Pinehurst  (NC) where he won in 1999 (saw it in person).

Also saw him at Olympic (SF) the year before when he lost to Lee Janzen.

In 1998, on the first day, Janzen hit a ball in the trees.  No one could find it.  He and alot of people looked for the ball until his time was running out.  Janzen started to hustle back to the tee to go again and take the penalty -- at that moment, a big gust blew the ball out of a tree where it had been stuck.  It made a loud thump when it hit the ground, people yelled, he ran up and hit his second shot with no penalty.  Janzen ended up beating Stewart by 1 stroke.

In October 1999, a few months after he won at Pinehurst, Stewart died in a plane accident/crash.

Here he is at Olympic --  can see some of the great scenery there with this shot.

Olympic is not super long, but it has alot of slope (fairways and greens both) and they groomed it to play extreme narrow -- almost to the point of being inhumane.
