2024 Baseball Season Thread

Much too early for this but probably puts us outside of the tournament as of today.
You seem to have an ear into the program, what do you think is happening?

I wonder if it's lack of senior leadership since the 3 SRs who play a lot, Powell, Brown and O'Dowd are in the lower half of the Top 10 starters in hitting. Only Powell is above .300 (#6 at .323) while Brown (.235) and O'Dowd (.195) are the bottom 2. That and the other starters are mostly sophomores and freshmen.

Our 3 weekend starters have ERA's of, Grubbs (3.00), Whitehead (3.58) and our ace, LBJ at 5.30. Our bullpen is hit or miss.

As noted several times, the team is inconsistent. Win road series against Top 25 teams Tech & K St while losing to BYU (bottom 25% in the Big XII) and other teams we should have taken. So if not coaching, what is it? Serious question, not just b*tching.

I'm not sure I can explain it. For the most part they have been playing good defense and scoring runs pretty consistently.

Pitching staff seems to be the biggest issue. LBJs season so far is perplexing. Otherwise, we did lose 3-4 arms this offseason/early season that were expected to contribute.

I think it's fair to say Pierce has reached his ceiling at Texas. He is now on a downward trend that appears to be spiraling out of control. When you have zero friends in the program these things often move fast especially when you start losing... IMO Pierce is done and will be replaced in June.

I've been watching this post since you posted it. In the past, several people would have replied very quickly stating you're wrong and list his past accomplishments. Funny, nobody has stated a thing this time.

It took a while but the light bulb came on for Pierce's fans

Refuting every anti-Pierce post gets a bit taxing.

Some of what MBHorns is saying is true. There is still a lot of season left and Texas is still in contention for the big 12 and NCAA goals. If they continue to play like a team that loses a series to BYU at home, it will be an awful end to the season. If they play like a team that goes on the road and knocks off a top 25 team, the post season, a super regional and maybe even a CWS trip are still in the cards.

Pierce does seem to have some internal issues going on - lots of coaching changes, and lost another coach a few weeks into this season. That is not normal.

Unless there is something egregious, I'd be willing to bet Pierce isn't gone in June, even if the team doesn't make the post-season.

I don't think he's gone in June either unless the wheels totally fall off. Be that said with some of the bad losses this season, the lug nuts do seem a tad loose.

I can't disagree with this. Honestly, as bad as some of the starts have been I'm surprised has hit the ceiling he has.

Pierce is not coaching up to the standards that CDC himself put in place. There is just something "off" about this team. BTW why is it your job to refute everything? Just disagreeing should be enough. This is a forum.

Refute, disagree, however you want to phrase it.

There is something off about this team, I don't disagree with that. Heck, our Ace starter came in for some relief work in tonight's game.

I'm not sure Pierce is far off from CDCs standards overall. 3 CWS trips in 6 years, 1 top 3 finish, 3 Big 12 championships. The question with Pierce is does he continue on this trajectory or does he string a few bad years together? If this year and next finish poorly, I wouldn't be shocked to see CDC look around. That said, the jury is still out on this season.

Texas loses 7-3 to Texas St thus losing the series to Texas St 1-2, yet another bad series loss.

Pierce is in his 8th year at Texas, so it would be 3 CWS trips in 7 years. In those trips he finished 3rd once and went 0-2 the other times.

I tend to agree on the part in bold.

Mods on pay sites who cover baseball are of the belief he won't be back. This is a recent change in their tone..

No way the Big 3 allow Texas baseball to limp into the SEC. IMO Pierce is done.

I think the fans are coming to a consensus just like they did with Mack. CDC won't ignore that.

Any names floated to replace him if he is let go?
