Quick Coaching Update (Updated Saturday 11AM)

This team isn't "close" when its losing to Kansas. That is about as far away from known college football civilization as it gets.

– Worst three year stint in since 1938

– First loss to KU since 1938.

– Second straight year of no bowl

– 5-7 and then 5-7 doesn't show progress

I don't think there is a reliable source on Charlie Strong's staff right now. Whatever is going on, they're in the dark about it for the time being.

Now, my personal opinion is simply this. You cannot give a man 36 months to turn a program around. I feel like the pressure placed on this team this year should've been reserved for next year. I don't think that you can argue that this is a much more talented team than what Strong inherited, but in all fairness theres absolutely no excuse to losing to Kansas .

In year one coach Strong had a senior team and you saw how well that defense played, but you can't win with swoops at QB

Year two was just a big clusterf##k full of blowout losses, he had a very young team with inexperienced upperclassmen.

Now this year those blowout losses turned into close losses so and the next logical progression is that next year we should win those close games then 2018 is when we start to become dominant.

With all that being said I can't argue with those of you that want him gone because of last week but man you can see how close this team was

I don't want Herman unless he's bringing Aranda with him. My top choice would be Dabo Sweeney or even Chip Kelly just because I think his offense with the talent we have here would be pretty scary . I also wouldn't mind Les Miles because I know he would kill it in recruiting here. Just my two cents
I could almost buy into what you are saying had we finished at least 8-4. But at 5-7 there's just no way.

This team finished with the same record as last year's team even though it was a better team than last year and played an easier schedule. So I don't see that this team was that close.

Yes, but Charlie's cake is about to come out of the oven. Just needs the icing. Is that not the dumbest thing anyone has heard in response to this craptastic football season?

I'm hearing that coach Strong may not be out just yet, everything basically hinges on this meeting tomorrow, but Charlie Strong and his staff believes there's a chance he stays and it was never indicated to them by Perrin or Fenves that Charlie's job was on the line this year. Basically all he had to do was not lose to Kansas and he would've return, all the other stuff was just talk that I think was perpetrated by the Austin-American statesman and other donors . But yeah fenves has a good relationship with strong and his staff so he understands all the challenges that faced this team so there's that hope that Charlie Strong can make his case for another season. Just wanted to pass along to you guys what I've heard recently
LMAO... Strong is GONE. Even had we beat TCU he was getting fired. All this Strong has a chance to come back is all BS. Good grief

I do think Patterson screwed over the entire athletics department not just football. ask Joe Wickline about the open check book to hire the best staff or the quality control coaches that left after 2014 because of pay. a lot of people thought he should have replaced Watson after 1st year but no way Patterson was going to pay a buyout for any assistant. until the last 2 games you could have made a very good case that this team was getting close to being very good just a play or 2 per game away but losing to Kansas is worse than losing to a lot of FCS schools and then the 2nd half today just sealed the vault on Charlie`s tomb. Charlie finally got the defense on track after ou game as Gilbert and the offense forgot how to score. Charlie just never got all 3 phases figured out and was never able to get momentum going for more than a game or 2

"until the last 2 games you could have made a very good case that this team was getting close to being very good just a play or 2 per game away"

Ah,no. No you couldn't.
Bear and I have had our differences of opinion on this site, but I could not agree more with what he said here. The only glimmer of light was the defense through a few games once Strong took the reins. And that was a tiny glimmer at best. The offense appeared to regress and let's not even get into Special Teams.

I've heard from multiple sources that Texas is the best coaching job in America (Barry Switzer, Joe Klatt being two); and that we have more money than the Vatican.  Well, I'd like to see some evidence of it in filling this vacancy.... last "coaching search" rendered little evidence.

Y'all all know that I'm a woman, and therefore, I've never been able to play a down of football, but I love the game, and I watch a lot of it.

I am wondering if the staff watched all of the game film, and if they did, did they watch it critically, with an unbiased eye.  This is where I'm going with this.  For about 2 to 3 games after Charlie took over the defense, they did play a little better, but that was when Malik was playing at a superhuman level, and before he was concussed.  The poor angles taken by other players didn't show because of Malik's ability to accelerate and bring them down.

Other than that, we have players continually out of position and taking bad angles.  That is on the coaches, and it shouldn't be happening in year 2.  The 'we're' young excuse is just that.  Tally the tackles, and tackles for a loss, I would wager money that most of those tackles and tackles for a loss  were made by Freshmen and Sophomores.  The defensive line is the one area where I haven't been disappointed, that and running back.  Though I think had there been just a little creativity in the use of D'Onta, he would have taken less abuse and gotten more yards.

Why is the middle of the field always, ALWAYS open against us?  Who isn't staying home?  Just wait for it, throw to the middle, and Boom!  You've got it.  That, too, is on the coaches.  Don't we play assignment football?  Do we think the middle of the field is a neutral zone?  We can't use it and neither can the opposition.

And, crap!  Kick off returns.  It's basic math.  Why run it out of the endzone to the 17 or 18?  The officials will spot it on the 25 if you don't.  Duh!  Want a challenge, a sportscenter highlight, then catch a pass and run it in for a touchdown.

I saw a post that suggested Roach should be a nose tackle.  Maybe I'm way off base, but he doesn't look to have the frame to carry that type of weight.  His speed and passion and nose for the football make him special.  Could he play middle linebacker?  Does he have the range and lateral speed?

It's inevitable that we will see some off the wall posts, and I'm going to try to check in periodically, but my time is going to be very limited, very soon.  Working to become certified in another area and attempting to condense 6 months of study into two while working, so going to have my plate full.  Please keep me updated as everything transpires.

I hated seeing Texas look like they did for the last 2 years.  The first year I could excuse, but by the second we were behind the curve, and this year was a joke.  It wasn't on the players.  It was on the coaches.  For the coaches to throw the players under the bus in public or private is the cowards way out.

Charlie needs to man up and say, fellows, I let you down and I let Texas down.  I'm sorry.  Texas will find you a great coach.  Play hard for him.  Listen to him.  Good luck and May God Bless.

Hook 'em!

Has the position been posted, yet?  If not, how long does it have to be posted before it can officially be filled?

Can someone tell us, please?

Don't blame Herman for asking for full control. Maybe if Charlie would have asked for the same his tenure would have worked out differently. Herman has coached at UT before, I'm sure he respects tradition, the uniforms, etc... I think what he's asking for, done correctly, is what Texas needs. I still have my reservations on him, but whoever the coach is needs to be able to tap into all resources and be given full support.

Several outlets, including footballscoop.com reporting that LSU is keeping Orgeron. If true, should slow down things a bit.

Buy Herman a multi-million dollar estate on Lake Travis and then allow him to take a full reverse mortgage.

Pay off the reverse mortgage annually.

Always pay him more than any other coach in the country. He likes to know he is appreciated.

Stay out of his way regarding all personnel decisions.

Look the other way once you realize that all that matters is winning.

Acknowledge that the coach is bigger than the university.

I mean c'mon. You want to win don't you?

This sums it up right here and you could substitute Myer in place of Saban.  When I see the words total control my thoughts are that any off field issues , academic issues including admission to the school for recruits will be handled by the Coaches and staff of the football program with Tom Herman being the final decision maker.  Plus you can throw in the hiring of all personnel including assistance and control of the Football Teams annual budget !
