View from the Cheap Seats Kansas State 2016
Charlie. .. we hardly knew ya
The Kansas State game marks the 1st TEXAS game in what should be the second half of TEXAS football in the Charlie Freaking Strong 5 year era. Instead it is a day we say good riddance to CFS, a damn good man and he recruited well but sorry Charlie. . . . you are not a quality, Top Tier Head football coach. If that offends some, oh well. The Cheap Seats is written to offer our opinion of what is happening on the field and how that relates to the tea leaves, as we read them. Certainly understand why the parents love him. But this is TEXAS and thanks to Mack Brown, we have a real taste of success we had not seen since the days of Darrell K Royal. Just hope Charlie can get 3 more wins somehow and not be established as the worst HC in TEXAS history. Otherwise he is in danger of becoming the 1st Head man in TEXAS history to lead his teams to 3 straight losing seasons. While TEXAS did have a 4 season losing streak, it covered 2 HCs. The other dubious distinction is him becoming the worst HC in TEXAS football history.
This is no longer about optics. This is about a man completely out of his depth. He's supposed to be a defensive guru, player developer extraordinaire and master of the 3-3-5 which seems to be an excellent scheme to counter the spread offenses of the BigXII. The reality is our defense is really poor and has gotten worse every year since he arrived. We do not see the players on the D progressing, in fact our best player seems to be going backward.
Stop us if you have heard this before. . ..TEXAS football travels to Manhattan, gets out-coached by Bill Snyder. Outside of 2002, been the same story since the BigXII was founded.
First hand report from the game from our cub reporter in the stands. TEXAS came out flat and not ready to go. CFS was buried in his head set talking to coaches with little interaction with his players. How do you not have a team ready to go in a game CRITICAL to your future? Once again, TEXAS goes to Manhattan only to be out coached by Bill Snyder. That man can coach. Bill Snyder gets ever bit of performance out of limited talent while TEXAS/CFS wants to win with superior talent. Not a bad philosophy considering that is what Nick Saban does. . . of course Nick also coaches his guys up. TEXAS and CFS once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory and blew another highly winnable game.
So the Tom Herman clock has officially started. Having said that, you don't hurt our feelings if you offer to double Chris Petersen's salary though not sure he leaves the Great Northwest. He's certainly an excellent Head Coach who understands how to run a program. Give us Tom Herman and throw some money at Tony Gibson for his DC. Who is Tony Gibson? DC at WVU who seems to be the 3-3-5 whisperer and the 3-3-5 seems well suited for defending the spread. Will solicit the opinions of some of our board coaches later in the week on why Gibson appears to be containing spread O's.
Defensive failures
How bad was the defense? They faced a QB who was sub-.500 passing coming into the game and saw him throw for 20-27 while leading his team on a 68 yard opening drive then an 80 yard 2nd drive to open up a 14 point lead KSU would never surrender. Ertz didn't just beat TEXAS with his, he kept theTEXAS D' off balance with some nifty running, picking up 78 yards on 18 carries including some key scrambles for 1st downs. When they weren't failing to tackle or blowing coverages, our D was incurring penalties to keep drives alive including 2 monumentally stupid penalties on KSU's final drive of the 1st half which lead to a TD and given how poorly our offense played, an insurmountable 21-7 half time lead. 5 1st half drives, 3 TDs drives covering 68 yards 80 and 75 yards.
The defense was not without their shining moments. They would come up with 3 turnovers in the 2nd half to keep the game close. . . .it's been almost 3 decades since the Horns won the turnover battle plus 3 and lost a game. Sadly our offense could not muster a single score off any of the 3. Defense has come up with 7 turnovers in the past 3 games with only 3 points to show for it. Our D would break KSU's longest red zone scoring streak in the nation, 58 trips into the "money" zone with 58 scores. They ended this with an Anthony Wheeler strip at the 1 foot line to prevent a blow out. And the D would hold KSU to 3 points in the 2nd half along with creating 3 turnovers. So after a poor 1st half, the D would record a solid 2nd half.
Offensive incompetence
The Cheap Seats has noticed that Longhorn fans tend to blame one side of the ball or the other. And whichever side they blame, they use this as an excuse for the side of the ball they favor. Cheap Seats has never understood this mentality and reports/opines what it sees on the field. So if you are a fan of . ..and we quote Joel Klatt . . ."TEXAS' high school offense" . . .you are not going to like this paragraph.
Our offense cannot get out of it's own way. We run hurry up for the sake of running hurry up. Being in the Top 10 of CFB offenses snapping the ball is WORTHLESS if it does not lead to production. In fact given how bad the D plays, though at least they seem to be showing up for 1 half of football each week, producing 3 and outs is a BAD THING. TEXAS had 10 offensive drives (last drive of the 1st half not counting), they had 4 drives of 4 plays or less, 4 punts, lost 2 on downs, missed a FG and scored 3 TDs.
Our best offensive player is D'Onte Foreman who carried the ball 24 times for 126 yards and extended his 100 yard streak to 8 games, leading the NCAA. He also only need 134 yards to become the 1st TEXAS RB to gain 1000 yards rushing since 2007. Another good day from DF though again, we failed to see the counters or trap plays we saw vs Norte Dame early in the year. Why we have gone away from that, Cheap Seats has no clue. We have 2 players with Olympic speed in Duveny and Burt yet we see another week without a single jet sweep, another play that worked so well early in the year, we don't use it anymore. Maybe we are saving that for Kansas. We also saw Kyle Porter record 1 carry and in 2 games a full time running back, not one carry for Lil Jordan.
Best as the Cheap Seats could tell, we did not record a single reception or target inside the hash marks but we did run a couple of skinny posts, one worked great and a seam route to Oliver that again worked great. Why are we self limiting the field? Caveat: Dorian Leonard did have one post route, wide open where he dropped an easy 1st down. We're not asking for the uber complicated, we are asking for some simple drag routes, we're asking for a crossing route or a quick slant and we're asking for play calling that keeps the other team off balance. After DF, the talent on the offense is at Wide Receiver, trust these guys. Are they going to drop a ball or 2? You bet but when they do catch it, they have the ability to make people miss. 7 games into the year, our offense is less complicated than it was vs ND. And why in the wide wide world of sports are we hurrying up so much when Shane struggles to get his feet set???? GREAT coaches take their talent and fit the schemes to it. You don't get points for snapping the ball fast, you get points for moving the ball. TEXAS was 3 of 11 on 3rd downs. Doesn't help when you try to go hurry up, throw a bad pass and end up in 2nd and long or 3rd and long.
How bad does it suck right now that to write this is a struggle. TEXAS must win 3 of the next 5 to qualify for a bowl game. WVU, Baylor, Kansas, TT and TCU on tap. Do we cheer for a bowl game and postpone CFS' dismissal? There is no one on the staff capable of even coaching a bowl game. Or do we just get it over, hire Tom Herman on 26 Nov as Cougar High is now out of the AAC playoffs and start our 3rd rebuilding job of the decade?
Ranking the BigXII
#1 WVU this team plays offense and defense. Is Tony Gibson the 3-3-5 whisperer? Bowl eligible now. Question is. ..can they run the table and make the playoffs? Doubt they do it with 1 win but depending on the win, they might win the conference. Okie Lite, KU, TEXAS, OU, ISU and Baylor remain.
#2 OU How we failed to score a TD off 4 turnovers vs them is staggering. Winning a shoot out with TT isn't cause for celebration. Has to win 1 of the last 5 to become bowl eligible.
#3 Baylor bye week. Bowl eligible. They have to face TEXAS, TCU, OU, KSU TT then WVU. Could their last game be for the BigXII title?
#4 Okie Lite They face WVU this week. Need one win of the last 6 to go bowling
#5 TCU Needs 2 wins in the last 5 to go bowling.
#6 KSU #'s 4 thru #6 can be switch around, not much difference here. Needs 2 wins to go bowling. Win over TEXAS HUGE for their post season hopes.
#7 TT Score points in bunchs. KK leading the league in co-ed pounding. Must win 3 to go bowling
#8 TEXAS. . .only because we beat ISU, like TT, need to win 3 of next 5. Our game with TT likely to be a bowl elimination game.
#9 ISU
#10 Kansas
