Welcome those observations. . . winning does not cover up errors. Think I covered the mistakes I had made note about. . .none of them 'coaching'. . .though some were "coachable" moments. .ie: bad snaps
Here's what I noticed:
*** After going up 17pts, why did they coaches call a short kick-off? Or did the kicker just not get off a good kick? If the latter, then this one is not on the coaches.
*** Near the end of the 3rd quarter, Texas had 2nd & 1 with the lead and little time on the clock. Why the need to rush a play? Wind wasn't a factor. So we rush a play, get called for a penalty cause our man wasn't set so it went to 2nd & 6. Then 3rd & 1 and on the 3rd down play we were stopped short so we had to punt. The first first down is the most crucial of any drive and that play killed it.
*** Texas takes the lead late in the game and line up for the extra point but a man short. We rush a man out and instead of calling a time-out or a 5yrd penalty, we rush the kick, it gets blocked and returned for 2 pts which ties the game. Instead of being up by 3 and ND needing a FG to tie it, they just need a FG to win it.
*** On the play mentioned above, Coach Strong bumps into the ref drawing a 15 yrd penalty which means Texas will be kicking off from the 20. Thank goodness our special teams did a tremendous job covering that kick-off.
As I said, Texas won and I'm happy. I'm really glad those decisions didn't cost us the game. HOOK'EM!
