The point on a brisket is typically the fattiest cut. Pitmasters often trim the point (and select edges) off a brisket and return those pieces to the smoker.

Are burnt ends tough, chewy worthless cuts of meat, or are they heavenly bites of smoky goodness? It depends on who you ask...

Rather than discard the trimmings and fat, we choose to savor all the information that flows through the site. So, sit down and help yourself to some burnt ends.

With Devwah Whaley seemingly off the board for Texas, the Longhorns turn their focus to Katy (TX) running back Kyle Porter.  We spoke to Porter at the Army All-American game who was in attendance despite the fact that he did not play due to injury.  Porter isn’t one for many interviews, but he was good enough to give us some insight into his recruitment as we come down the stretch.  Porter will visit Texas on the 23rd of January, but when asked what he was looking forward to he took a different approach than most recruits.  “It’s really not what I’m looking forward to seeing from them”, Porter told us.  “I just have to really go in and get a feel for what I’m looking for.  I’m just going in as if I don’t know anything about them.  I just want to start fresh and understand what I would get out of going to Texas”.  When we asked what Porter was looking for in a school, he played his answer very close to the vest.  “I don’t want to say really, I just want to go in without any coach knowing what I’m looking for.  I just want them to be themselves and let me handle it from there”.  The Longhorns have been a constant in Porter’s favorites, and the coaching staff at Texas is a big reason why.  “They have a great coaching staff.  I know if they are allowed to stay there they are going to build a great program.  They are just starting off, and once they get their recruits in they should do great”.  Porter is looking at a decision on National Signing Day.

Manor (TX) Erick Fowler took the field at the Army All-American game with a heavy heart.  In November he lost a teammate and close friend in a car accident, and Fowler played to honor his fallen friend.  Fowler played with his hair on fire all game and finished as one of the top tacklers for the West team.  The LSU commit can now move on to his college decision, which comes down to a battle between LSU and Texas.  Fowler will visit Texas this coming weekend, which is shaping up to be a big recruiting event for the Longhorns.  Texas will try to pry Fowler away from LSU, and the Austin area linebacker was pretty honest in his assessment of his recruitment.  “It could go either way”, Fowler said.  “It’s not what they can do, if they can show me they have more to offer than LSU that’s about it.  If you look at the numbers they both produce NFL players so both schools have a lot to offer”.

Fowler also told us he’s got a good relationship with Charlie Strong, Vance Bedford, and Brian Jean-Mary.  Forecasts for his position range from defensive end to middle linebacker, but Fowler has a plan in mind for his future.  “I’d like to play outside linebacker.  I like coming off the edge to bring pressure”.

Fowler is one of the players the Texas staff is in hot pursuit of, so this weekend should reveal more about the talented defender.

2017 Cypress Creek offensive lineman Grayson Reed is one of the hotter prospects in his class.  Reed has seen many offers come his way this fall, including invitations from Texas, Oklahoma, and Texas A&M.  The cousin of former Longhorn Cedric Reed, showed up at the US Army National combine for underclassmen and had a strong showing against some of the best competition in his class.  We caught up with Reed afterwards and got the latest on his recruitment.

Reed holds a total of 17 offers at this time but we asked him which school was standing out for him right now.  “I’m starting to like Texas a lot more right now because of Coach Mattox”, Reed told us.  “He was there at Tulsa when Tulsa offered me, so now that he’s there at Texas it spiked my interest a lot”.  Most Texas fans are just getting acquainted with coach Mattox, but Reed gave us some insight into what it was that made him such an appealing coach.  “He’s a really good coach, and he’s just a really good person.  He’s cool to be around and you can talk to him about anything.  That’s what I look for in a coach because I’m going to spend 4 years there”.  Reed also went on to say that he could see himself fitting into the new Texas offense that Gilbert and Mattox plan to install.  “People have told me I’m athletic enough to fit into any offense, so I’m looking forward to seeing everything”.

The Longhorns also have an ally in in Reed’s cousin Cedric who starred at defensive end for the Longhorns.  Reed says he knows that’s a valuable tool that can give him insight on the entire recruiting process and Texas as a whole.  “Of course he’s going to say good things about Texas since he went there, but I haven’t talked to Cedric much since the Texas offer.  Whenever he comes back down from Buffalo I can sit down and talk to him about it”.

It’s still very early in the process, but circle the name Grayson Reed as a guy who could be an early commit to the Longhorns.

2017 Beaumont Ozen running back Calvin Tyler had very little reputation coming into this season.  The golden triangle prospect made sure his name would be known after this season, running for 1800 yards and 26 touchdowns and breaking three team records.  Tyler saw interest start to pick up and feels like offers could start coming soon.

Tyler measured in at 5’9 and 183 at the combine and reported a 40 time of 4.39.  Tyler started hearing from colleges at the end of this season, and the list is growing every day.  “I’m hearing from Arizona State, Michigan State, Oklahoma State, Houston, and of course Texas.”  Tyler camped in Austin this summer and is being recruited by Texas coach Tommie Robinson, and named Texas a dream school.  “They’ve been my favorite since I was a little child”, Tyler told us.  As we’ve seen in recruiting, being named a dream school is not always a top indicator, and Tyler said an offer from Texas may not result in an immediate commitment.  “I’m going to keep my options open but if they did offer they’d be in my top three”.  One thing working for Texas is the new offensive direction under Sterlin Gilbert.  “I like the spread offense a lot, it just gives me more room to make plays”.  Tyler also has some family on campus in Austin already, as he is a cousin to Texas DB PJ Locke.  He plans to hit several camps and unofficial visits this year in an effort to see more campuses.  We’ll keep you updated on the latest with Tyler as his recruitment progresses.

Several commits fell after last week, and a few days around the Army All-American Game revealed some new information about some of the top prospects on the Texas board.  Mike Williams was removed from the board when he announced Saturday night he was accepted to Stanford officially.

In this week’s edition of the signing day forecast we give you our take on the crystal ball to track the top targets on the Texas board.  Each week we will give you a look at how these recruitments are trending and give you our prediction and a confidence rating based on a scale of 0-5.

Running Backs

Devwah Whaley â€“ Texas still feels like they can win this one, and if Whaley makes his visit this week all bets are off.  For now we will stick with our pick but we expect to have a clear picture after the visit weekend.

Prediction: Arkansas (Last week: Arkansas)

Confidence level: 2.5 (Last week: 2)

Kyle Porter â€“ Porter doesn’t like the attention recruiting brings, and he just wants to play football.  Word around San Antonio this weekend is the Longhorns remain in good shape.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 3.5 (Last week 3)

Darius Anderson – Texas has yet to re-engage with the talented speedster, but if twitter is an indication they might be mounting up for a run soon.  The word on Anderson is that TCU might be the leader in the clubhouse right now.

Prediction: TCU (Last Week: Unknown)

Confidence Level: 2 (Last week: Not listed)

Wide Receiver

Lil’Jordan Humphrey â€“ Texas and California are in play here, and Humphrey is very close with a few Texas commits.  Things continue to move in the right direction with the multi purpose Southlake star.  He announces on January 30th.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 4 (Last week: 4)

Tight End

Irvin Smith â€“ Smith is still committed to A&M despite Jake Spavital getting the axe.  While he remains publicly committed, behind the scenes things are churning.  Sources this week indicated this one is trending positively for Texas but the visit to Alabama remains a wild card.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 3 (Last week: 2)

Offensive Line

JP Urquidez â€“ I don’t know that Texas is seriously involved here.  I’d say we know more after the dead period.

Prediction: Baylor (Last week: Baylor)

Confidence level: 3 (Last week: 3)

Zach Shackleford â€“ Texas is ready to put the full court press on Shack, and despite the strong ties with the Kansas State staff, the feeling is that Texas can close with one of the top interior line prospects in the state.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Kansas State)

Confidence level: 2 (Last week: 0.5)

Patrick Hudson â€“ As has been the case from the start, there is a lot of confusion as to whom Hudson will visit in January.  He’s never been one for the recruiting spotlight and it seems like the longer this goes, the better it fares for Baylor.

Prediction: Baylor (Last week: Baylor)

Confidence level: 3 (Last week: 3)

Ryan McCollum – Texas offered this week, but it might be too late in the game.

Prediction: Texas A&M

Confidence level: 3.5

Defensive Line

Jordan Elliott â€“ Elliott was adamant during the Army Bowl that he was sticking with Michigan and not visiting Texas.  To our knowledge the Texas staff has not been in contact but there is thought they will make a last minute run at the Houston DT.

Prediction: Michigan (Last week: Michigan)

Confidence level: 4 (Last week: 4)

Kelvin Lucky â€“ The Horns need to get Lucky on campus and sell him on becoming the uber athletic edge prospect Charlie Strong has been looking for.  The Texas staff could close this one if they push for it.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 2.5 (Last week: 2.5)

Stephon Taylor â€“ News on Taylor continues to indicate positive things for the Longhorns.  Taylor could make a return visit (unofficially) to Austin and if he does consider that a very positive sign.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 3 (Last week: 2)

D’Andre Christmas-Giles â€“ Like Taylor, this one is trending more positive by the day.  It is conceivable Texas could end up with a trio of Louisiana DT prospects.  Word around San Antonio is that LSU isn’t the threat they were made out be.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: LSU)

Confidence level: 2.5 (Last week: 0.5)

Marcell Southall â€“ All signs still point to Norman, but there is some thought a visit to Texas will take place.

Prediction: Oklahoma (Last week: Oklahoma)

Confidence level: 5 (Last week: 5)

Mark Jackson – Jackson had a good week at the Army Bowl, and some folks believe Texas is running third in the race behind A&M and Oklahoma.

Prediction: Oklahoma (Last week: Oklahoma)

Confidence level: 2 (Last week: 2)

Alton Robinson â€“ Robinson got a Texas offer this weekend, but some things we’ve heard behind the scenes say this is extremely unlikely.

Prediction: Texas A&M

Confidence level: 4

Linebacker

Dontavious Jackson â€“ The word on Jackson this week was negative for Texas and there was some thought the feeling could be mutual.  I don’t personally believe that, but it’s looking to be more unlikely that Jackson will end up in Austin.

Prediction: Florida State (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 3 (Last week: 3)

Jeffrey McCulloch â€“ We’ve heard some things that have us feeling bullish on the Shark. Notre Dame is a factor but Texas is in the lead right now.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 4 (Last week: 3.5)

Erick Fowler – Fowler announced he would be in for the big visit weekend in January.  Texas may be looking at him as an inside linebacker at this point thus the rumored drop in interest for Jackson.  Family pressure could swing him to Austin.  The feeling is that Fowler is 50/50 right now, but I’ll give LSU the slightest of edges.

Prediction: LSU (Last week: LSU)

Confidence level: 0.5 (Last week: 4)

Defensive Back

Deontay Anderson â€“ Texas trails Ole Miss, and unless Reggie Hemphill can do some work on Anderson during his visit, the standout safety looks bound for Oxford.

Prediction: Ole Miss (Last week: Ole Miss)

Confidence level: 4 (Last week: 4)

Brandon Jones â€“ I would caution Texas fans not to count their chickens yet but you can start building the coop.  A strong official visit this weekend could solidify their spot at the top.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 3.5 (Last week: 3.5)

Eric Cuffee â€“ Cuffee has already made a commitment video with Bleacher Report and the secret is out that it will be Texas.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 5 (Last week:5)

Chris Brown â€“ Some of this will depend on Dontavious Jackson, but if Texas pushes for his commitment they can win it.  Arizona State might be the surprise team.

Prediction: Texas (Last week: Texas)

Confidence level: 0.5 (Last week: 3)

Good stuff as usual. Seems we simply lost the recruiting battle with DJax. I don't buy that we lost interest, he's too good not to have a spot for. Getting Fowler would most certainly lessen that blow though.

Several have indicated that the staff for a lack of better word have cooled on him a bit. They would still take him but there are a few others they like more. However the one position I am not worried about is LB.

Agreed Mike, the positions that i really believe we need to worry about is the dline and qb. We have the potential of having an amazing dline if Poona becomes a difference maker.

All other positions i believe we are are good.

If I counted correctly you are picking 11 kids to pick UT. I don't remember how many we have committed now. Would these 11 give us a full class. If not who else do you think we will get.

Zach needs to visit the Little Apple in the winter with the winds blowing and he will definitely favor Texas.

d-line is a huge need with the loss of Ridgeway. I don`t believe Texas has a dominant one on campus but I do believe in a rotation Poona,Boyette, and Nelson all have the talent to make plays. we just need some freshmen that can play well enough that the older players are not required to play far to many plays each game.

at LB if Texas gets McCullough and Fowler then that is a win.

at DB Texas needs Jones,Cuffee, and I have heard that Mayden from Sachse is now a possibility but the first 2 along with Eboh gives us a great compliment to add with 2015 class.

o-line Texas needs to put full court press on Hudson and Shackleford you can never have enough quality upfront.

Word around is loss of interest but I agree it's hard to buy they just decided to back off

I don't think so.  It appears that Strong is handling his recruitment, and with the family connections and the depth chart at Texas I have to believe Strong still believes they have a chance.

We need at least one more along with Stephon Taylor, and I don't think staff would turn down any DT's if they wanted to come along.

Did the big 12 win the vote to have a championship game

I hope not.

If they had a championship game this year, it would have been OU vs OSU . . . one week after the OU vs OSU game.

IMO, no title game until you have two divisions and two more members added.

Yep looks like a title game is on the way. Kinda stupid with a round robin format. Well maybe we can have RRR part 2 in a few years.
