Talent isn't why Texas is now a very average team in the Big 12

"It's almost like that big dog on the porch," Strong said. "When that big dog gets off the porch and gets bitten, he's no longer the big dog anymore. We're no longer the big dog. We've been bitten. Now everybody thinks they can bite you. Now we have to pick ourselves up and get the bite back in us. This is Mike Tyson after Buster Douglas knocked him out. Can he get back up?

Yes it is...Lack of talent is the very reason. Bitten or not, if we have the talent to bitch slap anyone who tries to stand toe to toe with us we will regain our dominant position in the conference. Talent and coaching is why Bama, Oregon, FSU,  and tOSU are dominating their conferences. The Big 12 is no different. The better coached and most talented teams will always win out 99% of the time.

"Lack of talent" is exactly why Texas is now a very average team in the Big 12.

It's not the only reason but it's the biggest reason.
I'm with you. It wasn't a fluke we didn't have a player drafted last year.
Wasn't it Tom Landry who said coaching only really matters if teams are equal talent-wise? Look at it this way...give me the 05 Horns and give Lombardi, Walsh, DKR or whoever ''05 CU in the CCG and I'll win. Maybe not 70-3 but handily.

Now if you have talent AND good coaching, look the hell out.

"Lack of talent" was a contributing factor to our mediocrity the past 5 seasons, sure, but just one. IMHO, it is (was?) most glaring at O-Line. Look at our recruiting rankings, too, and you'll see that our classes were in the Top 25.

The talent we brought in wasn't developed or maximized under Brown at the end of his tenure.

The first rule of the jungle...the big 'uns eat the little 'uns...and the biggest 'uns eat best of all.  Until UT becomes a "big 'un" talent-wise again, the Horns are gonna be on some menus.  Anybody who doesn't think that there's a talent disparity between UT and at least three Big XII teams, and certainly between UT and the likes of 'Bama, tOSU, and FSU hasn't been paying attention.  Speaking of that, UT's paying the price right now for Mack's lack of paying attention over his last five years.  He went for the low-hanging fruit more often than not, and Strong's now having to try to turn that low-hanging fruit into fruitcake.  Yes...it is a lack of talent, and it's a very big reason that UT's currently a less-than-500 team right now.

You have to "like" any post that uses such (dis)tasteful imagery.

Good post / thread JB.

It is a combination of recent factors, some we can blame on MB.

Talent is a # Big 1 - IMHO

ATTITUDE & DESIRE is a Big # 2

Lack of serious coaching is a Big #3.

Passion for the game, lack of TEAM first, team clichés, lack of a serious OL where it all starts (at least on the O), being bitten by the competition in recent years which empowers them UT can be beaten add to the first big 3 IMO.

I strongly believe that a great deal of this is going to change... not overnight, but it will change for the better under CS.

We are TEXAS, we know we can do a hell-of-a lot better than what we have seen in recent years.

Be patient young grasshopper.

Hook 'Em!

Hook 'Em!

Interesting to use dog as an illustration, because Cecil Cherry and others from Florida have made a point of putting more dog in things around here.

Players with alota dog in'em.

Wait til Cecil and the others get here and ... as Pop put it during that time out in a Spurs game ... get some nasty in things around here.

I like dogs & nasty.

Nasty

Hostile

Intense

- are 3 factors this program has lacked for a while.

Let's get back to a seriously NASTY attitude regardless if it is ou or Iowa State!!

People didn't realize how" gangsta " Texas was in 2005.Vince's words !!!!

We had some badasses on that team you wouldn't want on the other side in a dark alley.

Since then Mack recruited babysitters...Mack's words. Wanted good kids who he could trust to babysit.

You can't win football games with babysitters.

Charlie looks to be bringing in guys with (hopefully character), but with bad attitudes on the football field.

Football is a violent game and is played best by violent men. Passive goodhearted guys don't do that well.

Im going to chime in on this subject...I dont believe its just a lack of talent situation that Texas has been dealing with the last few years. Ive seen the players up close on and off the field there is some talent on this team and in prior years. I see size and  I see some skill in the key positions wr, rb,ol,dl,db what has been lacking is SPEED in all areas (esp offense) and ATTITUDE across the whole program. There is entirely to many players that...look like tarzan play like jane ...and to me thats attitude...the players must refuse to be beaten down physically and mentally. CS is working on fixing this problem and he will very soon. Talent alone can win games but a hard working ....hard nose team with the right attitude team will win championships. I FREAKN could not stand TS and the ENTIRE O last season go into the fetal position everytime something went wrong or after a 3 and out series...I was so pissed out of my mind almost every game...my wife was suggesting that I get on meds or stop watching the games...anyway imo this team going forward is going to be built with SPEED/ATTITUDE!!! HOOK'EM

I coped by drinking heavily, Tinman, but your point about attitude is well-taken.

"Looked like Tarzan, played like Jane". Heard it before, but it still makes me laugh!

You see, a lot of UT fans have duped themselves into believing that there's been all this talent on the team and for various reasons, it just hasn't performed.  Maybe a little of that is true, but you've gotta believe what you see better than that.  UT has suffered some of its' most embarrassing losses in the last half a decade, and hasn't even looked all that good most of the time when they've won.  Misfires that often go directly to talent. Football teams with a lot of talent rarely mess the bed as UT's done consistently for a while now, so yeah, a lack of talent IS a major factor. Until/If/When Strong gets the talent level back up, and gets the new players trained and into the system, there's not a lot of logical reason to expect all that much improvement.  Sorry if this is an inconvenient truth.
