Kyler Murray & Demarkus Lodge visit UT

Ok guys I've been doing some other work for the site tonight so I know I'm late to the party but here are my thoughts on the situation.
1) While the rumors have been around that Murray was a "mystery recruit" for a while this mid week visit came out of nowhere. I don't know that I can remember a stealth visit with two prospects the level of both Murray and Lodge in the middle of the week. Just getting those guys on campus is a huge win for Charlie Strong
2) The last month has been full of ups and downs, but I'll say this about Charlie. Everytime it seems he's on the ropes in recruiting he answers back with a big shot. Several times in the past few months it has looked like the Horns were going into a tailspin and have pulled something out to generate some momentum. For a guy who has been talked about as an average recruiter he sure has the chance to lock down a knockout class.
3) Obviously Malik is important in this situation as his relationship with Murray had to help get him to campus. While Malik was clear after his committment he wasn't going to be about recruiting, he did say once he was on campus as a host it would be his job.
4) Murray can create another recruiting title wave as he certainly has pull with Lodge, Daylon Mack, Kris Boyd, Soso Jamabo, and Holton Hill. I'll go so far as to say flipping Murray would be a knockout punch to Texas A&M and would permanently flip momentum back to Texas. It would also leave the Aggies in a dire quarterback situation going into the season.
5) In speaking with some sources tonight there isn't anything solid enough to run with but I did speak to someone acquainted with Kevin Murray. He stated this has been brewing for quite a while and that Murray is a big fan of Strong. The interesting thing I heard is that despite the criticism he receives, Kevin Murray is a big fan of Shawn Watson as a quarterback developer.
6) The timing on this could be tricky, with Gentry talking to Harbaugh and Kai Locksley still planning to visit. The Horns are gambling a bit here. If they can hold onto Gentry and gain either Locksley or Murray then it's obviously a big win, but the possibility is out there that Texas could lose everything in this. Strong needs to keep his finger on the pulse of things but I don't need to tell him that.
7) I'd be very interested to hear the pitch Watson and Strong gave today. Obviously the coaches will have to overcome questions about the general scheme and offensive performance from this season. Could the chance to land this one recruit cause Strong to re-tool the offense?
8) It's going to be a hell of a ride to signing day.

IMO, the offense will need to retooled anyway if Jerrod Heard is gonna be the starting QB.

kevin murray doesn't know squat about developing QBs or which coaches are best qualified to do so. Watson sucks and that's all there is to it.

Have to believe Norvell would be a part of that. Between Wickline and Norvell there is plenty of spread / zone-read knowledge in house.

Where is Murray projected to be taken in the MLB Draft this coming June? It's been mentioned on the other thread, but will signing with Texas raise his baseball stock? [SIZE=14.3999996185303px]I doubt he even plays football if he goes early in the MLB Draft - say rounds 1 or 2.[/SIZE]
It'll be a recruiting win for UT regardless, because of the timing. We'll get the hype and other blue-chippers who wanna play with Murray.

1) One of the things that I really like about the Watson-Wickline-Norvell triple are the opportunities for cross-planning on offensive game-planning and qb coaching. Offensive game planning with all three, qb training with Watson/Norvell (believe Norvell was charged with qb development at one time and could provide an assist), wide receivers with Norvell, and Wickline exclusively on o-line.
2) QB film sessions with the qb coach and supplement with the wr coach when possible as a value add. What can the qb do to help the receivers? Same goes for wr film study. What can the receivers do to help the qb from the qb coach pov.
3) Wickline can sit in when possible. What can the qb/receivers/tight ends do to help the o-line and vice versa, but I think Wick is probably one of the hardest workers on campus already. I don't think he is an offensive coach that Strong is displeased with. Wick did a pretty good job with the 5, count 'em, 5 pieces he had to work with during the last part of the season. Band-aids only stretch so far.
4) I have always thought offensive game planning should be done with input from the defensive staff. We have that covered with Strong.
5) Gentry needs some attention from media and fans. I realize it is trendy to be 'realistic, but when you ignore a recruit, you jeopardize their commitment. He has not received enough attention and has been the recipient of far too much doubt. He should get more appreciation. Hope he stays with us because he certainly has the tools to be successful.

College Baseball Daily projects him as a potential first round pick.
Most kids that are serious about MLB, the draft, and college baseball will plant statements in a few key ears, either establishing their intention to go to school or their signability. For example, when you see a kid that has 1st round talent fall ten rounds, it's probably because they let it be known that they intend to go to college.
Truthfully, Murray's MLB stock can't get much higher. How highly he's drafted will be determined by his moves/statements this Spring.
Also, remember that if he plays for Augie, he has to stay in school 3 years before being eligible for the draft again.

The thing is, I don't think Kyler is ready to put down the football just yet. So what better situation to be in than at Texas where he can do both and expect legitimate success in both?
Whats his dream? Is it the NFL? Or, MLB? Does he know yet?
I said I was out for the evening, but too exciting. This is definitely it! I have two thoughts on MLB.
1) If an eighteen year old is good enough to go straight to the majors, the money is frequently overwhelming. If you haven't heard the stories, please look them up. The college experience can never be replaced, even if you attend as an older student. College should be experienced when you are just out of high school, full of exuberance and promise, as well as, single.
2) if a player doesn't go straight to the majors, the minors is no picnic. As Augie has been quoted, 'why would anyone give up baseball at UT to play in the minors?'
Adam Dunn was projected as a high draft pick, chose UT, stayed for a year, and when he didn't win the starting job the following year, he was in a strong negotiating position. I believe he went to the Reds? Right/Wrong? He never looked back.
The Murrays are smart. They know where they stand, and they wouldn't be talking to UT Baseball, as well as football, if Kyler was not considering staying at UT for at least three years. It's possible that he loves football and would like to see if he can make it at the pro level in that sport.

Murray is a legit 5'8" and 170 pounds. I wouldn't say he has no shot at the NFL, but he's got no shot at the NFL. He will make a hell of a college QB, and 2B.
According to another board this has been cancelled. Gentry is supposed to be visiting Michigan, and Strong going on Monday if he is still committed to us.

Nobody has said it's cancelled. They said Strong might reschedule it for Monday if Gentry visits Michigan.
That's a smart move by Strong because he would have the last visit.

I'd love to land Murray, he's going to bring some talent with him. The amount of money he'd make if he's a 1st or 2nd round pick would set him up for life, unless he has Vince Young's advisors. . .
