Final College Football Poll Released

Agreed on the no conference championship hurting the league in this case. But.... this format was supposed to shore up the deficiencies that the BCS inherently presented.

It was disastrous in its first year.

And no way can you tell me that the Big 12 wasn't, from top to bottom, one of the best conferences in college football this season. The Big 10 definitely wasn't better ....

I would argue that the Big12 is, after the Big10, the worst conference in college football -- or at least according to perception - which at the end of the day is all that counts.

Why are Big12 schools the only schools in the FBS power 5 scrutinized for having weak OOC schedules?  It's because the conference schedule is weak and they need to beef up their SOS by scheduling quality OOC opponents.  I remember when the last Big12 conference realignment happened and Texas decided to stay in, that we would have to beef up our OOC schedule to make up for the weak conference schedule in order to be competitive nationally.  You don't hear these conversations with SEC of Pac12 schools.
Except, I think you have your perception wrong.

In the roundtable last night on ESPN, the only time they stopped to talk about weak conference and how it hurt their chances - it was Ohio St and the Big 10.

The Big 10 only had two teams who were really contending for anything. The Big 12 only had two teams who were not contending for anything.

The Big 10 is not only weak, but it's downright boring watching that style of football being played.

Strength of schedule is another issue entirely and that is where Baylor and TCU, but particularly Baylor, lost. Baylor's schedule is a complete joke.

I’m not a Big 12 homer, but do agree that BIG 12, top to bottom, is much tougher than Big Ten.  However, I have no complaints about Ohio State receiving the final spot.  Valid arguments can be made for tOSU, TCU, and Baylor.  College football will always be surrounded with controversy until it adopts a NFL/NBA style playoff system.  Granted, it’ll be much tougher to organize/align conferences due to abundance of D1 teams but with player stipends and programs like UAB folding, I can see this happening sooner than later.  The question is, how soon.  IMO, at the end of the day, this controversial 4 team playoff is much better than the 2 team BCS system.

As for the BIG 12, the lack of CCG killed TCU/Baylor’s chances at CFP. But I also believe tOSU was elevated to #4 because of their history as traditional power and brand.  Personally, because I’m a college football snob, I prefer watching Alabama vs Ohio State over TCU/Baylor.

The way I see it, the ACC, SEC, and BIG TEN are safe if conferences were to survive.  The problem with PAC 12 and BIG 12 are lack quality teams regionally to expand.  PAC 12 is essentially landlocked due to lack of brand name teams they could add from the West and BIG 12 are relegated to tier 2/3 regional programs.

We already said BIG 12 was probably one of the top 2 conferences in football and basketball.  No problem with competition right?  So, let’s take OU and move to PAC 12, ACC, or B1G.

Easier said than done.

I doubt OU can leave OSU hanging and I'm sure UT and our state politicians with Tech, BU, & TCU ties made promises to each other.  Lastly, UT likes being the "lead dog". Doubtful that we'd be that in the Pac-12.

Who's to say 11-1 UT and OU teams get left out of the playoff?

Guys, here is the deal: the Big 12 is a strong conference, but it has only 2 really strong brands: Texas and Oklahoma. You can bet dollars to donuts that if Texas and OU had been in the positions that TCU and Baylor were in, one or both of them would have made it.

The business about championship games and the like is just BS. This was about having the draw of Ohio State vs. that of Baylor or TCU.

When you hear Patterson talking about brands, this is what it means.

If the other teams in the Big 12 want to establish a brand, they are going to have to do it nationally, and playing the Sisters of the Poor for non conference games is not going to get them there. Even the SEC is beginning to recognize that., though they really didn't have to with ESPN.

There is no point in adding any more teams to the Big 12 unless that can bring a "brand" with them. It would cost money, and would not help. There are few out there with the brand that would help, and I don't see any of them moving.

There was talk about Florida State a while back. They have their brand and why would they leave the ACC for a stronger conference? We might could get Louisville, which brings a brand in basketball, but less of one in football. BYU brings neither.

What Texas needs to do is win. Then WE will be up there. I am not going to worry about anybody else.

While I think a conference championship played a part and that needs to be fixed, I am not so sure that they would have picked the winner of Baylor/TCU one tOSU. Baylor beat a higher ranked team last night than tOSU. Once they saw they could get on of the big names and have a legit argument for picking them, it was over.

As for the conference championship, I hope either the NCAA removes the rule that requires 12 teams to be able to have a CFG, or we pick up 2 more teams. Unfortunately the latter would take a few years.

Oh and it is good to see one of the best posters back! Welcome back SFlonghorngirl!

Whats so great about the Big Ten?  Its just a couple of decent teams and a bunch of "Kansas" teams.

If Kansas could play Kansas they would have a win too
