Let's start this week's edition off with a link to what I think could be one of the best High School Football feature stories I've ever read. I think you'll enjoy it, too. It's basically an ESPN tour of numerous schools located along I-20 (in Texas) and the stories that go with them.

As a side note, West Rusk (New London, Texas) is featured in this and the story of that school exploding in 1937 is detailed. As a young journalist, I was honored to be a part of the 50th anniversary reunion coverage. Some items of interest from this story:

1. This story is the reason why natural gas is now odorized so it can be detected by smell. This explosion spurred this development.

2. UT-ex Walter Cronkite - this is the first story he ever covered after his years at UT.

3. Among the notes of sympathy that flowed into New London, Texas (just south of Kilgore) was a note from German leader Adolph Hitler.

Ok gang, who's going to a playoff game Friday or Saturday night?

IF my schedule will let me, I will be going to the Longview-Lufkin game. I tend to try to go to what I think will be the closest played game and Longview-Lufkin will likely be just short of war. Lufkin beat LV early in the year so the Lobos will have a score to settle.

If I can't go to that one I'll either go to DeSoto-Coppell or Denton Guyer vs Plano. DeSoto SHOULD beat Coppell based on shear talent, but Coppell is consistent and plays mistake-free football. DeSoto plays like a river boat gambler. They either win big or get themselves into a dog fight.

Longview 44, Lufkin 41 - always hard to beat a team twice in one season.

DeSoto 64, Coppell 48 - Talent wins out

Guyer 28, Plano 24 - Really depends on which Plano team shows up. Guyer could pop this one open if Plano doesn't bring their A game.

Camas football team aims for redemption at state Bellarmine Prep comes to town Saturday at 5 p.m.By Dan Trujillo | November 12, 2014 4:24 p.m.

In order to play football for the next four weeks, these brothers from Camas are going to have to make every single day count.

On the field, and in the classroom, weight room and film room. No stone can be left unturned.

“Never get tired of the grind,” said senior wide receiver and defensive back James Price. “It’s not any easy thing to do in a physical game like football, but championship teams are the ones who never stop working. Anything can happen. We learned that the hard way.”

Price and the Papermakers haven’t forgotten about the 2013 state tournament ending with a one-point loss to Chiawana in the championship game. Since that dark December day, these brothers picked up their town and started rebuilding the road back to state.

And now the journey begins again Saturday, when Camas (10-0) hosts Bellarmine Prep, at Doc Harris Stadium. Kickoff is at 5 p.m.

Head coach Jon Eagle said these Papermakers had a lot to prove after Camas made it to the Final Four in 2012 and 2013, and the championship game in 2014.

“Until the kids do it and achieve it, that’s when they really start to believe,” Eagle said. “Not a lot of people thought we would be 10-0. Our kids should be confident, but they can’t just go out there and coast. You have to be mentally and physically prepared on every play, or you’re going to be done.”

Camas came out flat in the first half of Friday’s state qualifying game against Tahoma before scoring five touchdowns in a row to 47-18 victory. Cole Zarcone rushed for 108 yards and scored two touchdowns. Bryan Kelly added 90 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Liam Fitzgerald threw for 239 yards, including touchdown passes to Jared Bentley and Price.

Eagle said Tahoma quarterback and defensive lineman Amandre Williams kept the Bears in the game on both sides of the field. He racked up 476 passing yards, but the Papermakers held him to just two touchdowns in the fourth quarter.

Camas made a big defensive stand before halftime and then scored four touchdowns in the third quarter to kick start the running clock.

Price said the Papermakers will need a 48-minute effort to take down a determined Bellarmine Prep team, who was also supposed to be “rebuilding.” These teams squared off in the semifinals a year ago. Now they’re kicking off state against each other.

“The only way we can make our dreams come true is to keep pushing hard in practice,” Price said. “Camas has a lot of pride in its football program. It means the world to me to be a brother for four years, give back to the youth and keep the tradition alive.”

WA 4A Preview from the local rag:

Class 4A state first round

BELLARMINE PREP (7-3) vs. CAMAS (10-0)

When, where: 5 p.m., Doc Harris Stadium, Camas

Internet webcast: elisportsnetwork.com

What’s at stake: Winner advances to state quarterfinals, will host winner of Eastlake/Bothell.

Last week: Camas beat Tahoma 47-18; Bellarmine Prep beat Kentwood 17-6

Common opponents: None.

About Bellarmine Prep: The Lions from Tacoma was the third-place team in the Narrows League. The Lions lost to Gonzaga Prep (17-0), Olympia (21-14) and Gig Harbor (49-0). The Lions scored an upset of sorts by beating Kentwood from the South Puget Sound League Northeast division. But considering the SPSL Northeast sent three teams to the playoffs and all three lost, maybe it’s not such a big upset. RB Nathan Goltermann-Doyle rushed for 214 yards including a 96-yard TD run last week.

About Camas: Camas beat Bellarmine 49-21 in the 4A state semifinals last year. The Papermakers gave up 476 passing yards last week to Tahoma, but will face a much different team this week. QB Liam Fitzgerald has passed for 2,507 yards and 23 TDs. WR James Price has 68 catches for 1,149 yards and 11 TDs.RBs Bryan Kelly (908, 18 TDs) and Cole Zarcone (798, 14 TDs) lead the rushing attack.

Prep Prognosticator says: The Papermakers pride themselves on their defense. Look for a better effort this week.

The Pick: Camas 38-14

Score Czar: Camas 34-8

(joewya's pick: Camas 48-10)

i see Houston Scarborough's dream season is over. since 0-10 playoff teams are kinda rare, are they the first school to go 0-11?

Yes, they are the first team in Texas high school football history to go 0-11.

It wasn't difficult to achieve. For 100 years or so, only the district winner would advance. Now, four teams advance. Scarborough literally went into the season KNOWING they were going to the playoffs. Their district only has four teams. Every team was guaranteed a spot.

I'm live at Irving Schools Stadium for Rockwall Heath vs. Newman Smith.  Excited to see Deshon Elliott in action and hopefully get an interview.  We've been stonewalled by the Heath coaching staff in that attempt, but I'll do my best.

Is this worthwhile?

Yea! Love that the scores are also links.

I'm using an app called Friday Night Rivals which is pretty cool, but can't get it from my phone to my laptop.
