SIGNATURE WIN. . . .

Charlie F Strong broke through and secured his 1st year signature win. . .no longer does he have to point at games we coulda/shoulda/woulda won. . . . .in a huge pressure situation. . . TEXAS came through with it's most complete game of the year. . .

Playing a WVU team that controlled it's own destiny coming into the day and ranked #23 vs a TEXAS team needing to win 2 of the next 3 to go bowling. . .few gave our Horns much of a chance.    BTW, the last "ranked" team TEXAS beat was 2010 vs #7 Neb not 2008 (btw, we beat ranked teams in 2009 too) .. . maybe they meant ranked teams at home with a full moon in a night game with the wind blowing from the south and a Fox broad casting crew . .. sometimes you can get carried away with cherry picking.

And this was almost how CFS wants to win .. . .1st part was there. . . GREAT defense. . . might have been the most impressive defensive performance of the year. ..this was the #15 total O and #36 scoring O in the nation .. . .and the crew shut them down.    In fact on the last play of the game, game is over, WVU was at the goal line ready to land a meaningless score and the D stood them up. . . .plus a ball control offense. . .OK, that part didn't show but more on that later.

It bares repeating, this win gives TEXAS a great shot at going bowling. . .in fact this week's game with Okie Lite is basically a "who wants to go bowling the most" showdown.   Many thought at best we'd win 1 of 3 if not go 0-fer but instead, an inspired performance.

Can we have a huge shout out to Cedric Reed who read the press clippings and said. . ."I am not going quietly into the night". . .with one game he resurrected his spot in the NFL draft .. . . .(OK pic from last year's game) .. . highlighted with his 4th quarter safety to put the game out of reach.    3 Sacks, 2 Tackles for losses. . . he was in BEAST mode. . . .this is the Ced Reed we expected . .. . and this is the Ced Reed we need if we are going to ruin another teams season.

Defense was HUGE on 3rd downs limiting WVU to 3 on 17 attempts. . . .Bedford calls this his "MONEY" down and TEXAS was reaping the windfall.   Secondary did a great job in both coverage and limiting YAC (yards after catch). . .Trickett is a fine QB, top 3 in the BigXII but between great coverage and better pressure, he fell apart.

As much as the D dominated . .. one of the biggest plays was stopping WVU's 2 point conversion in the 4th quarter which keep them from making it a one score game. . ..

With 2 exceptions, Special teams were NAILS. . . . .WVU enjoyed terrrible field position much of the day, twice starting at their own 1 & 2 yard lines. . . .not sure where Mr Davidson came from but he backed his punts up like a golfer hitting a well placed 9 iron 2 feet from the hole. . . .We did have a shanked FG and one bad KO return but otherwise an outstanding day from the STs unit.

Flipping to the offensive side of the ball, we have a tale of 2 halves. . . .stop me if you have heard this before.    HELLO RUN GAME. . .. . J Gray with a 10 carry 101 yard 3 TD day. . . .Malcom Brown offered up 20 carries for 90 yards while Daje finally got involved with 2 carries for 24 yards.   And we saw some nice runs from D'Onte Foreman who looks like he's auditioning for MB's role next year in the offense.

The bulk of this occurred in the 1st half as the Horns roared to a 24-3 halftime lead .. . . and as I said, a tale of 2 halves.

2nd half looked more like the KSU game. . . .not one sustained drive, the longest "drive" (I use the term loosely) was only 36 yards.   And frankly after what was some exceptional play calling in the 1st half. . . we seemed to have gone completely away from what works.

Can someone explain to me how on a night where our RBs are gashing (at least in the 1st half) WVU. . .Swoopes only running the ball once (he was sacked another time)?

TEXAS was 1 for 8 on 3rd downs in the 2nd half. . . PUTRID . .. .play calling and execution were both poor. . .in fact I'd likely give playcalling the lower grade as repeated failures on 1st and 2nd down put us in 3rd and long too often.   Swoopes was on 3 for 12 in the second half.

And not to pile on the young man but I'm starting to think he's just not a very good QB.   His deep balls are not passes as much as heaves and hopes.    Of course it did not help that he and WRs miscommunicated a few times but when I see the same problems over and over .. . I'm starting to think it's the QB not pass catcher on the wrong page.  Now WVU plays some good D but I did not a see a QB who had progressed much. . .certainly not the kid we saw vs OU or ISU. .. . .

One comment I will make, I love the way our WRs and TEs sell out in the blocking game. . . .. .

Make no mistake, this was a SWEET SWEET win but our ability to control the clock and the ball in the 2nd half is a key factor to winning the CFS way. . . . glad to see one of the best defenses in the nation show up BIGTIME to help log our best win (to date) of the season.

Ranking the BIGXII:

#1   Baylor. . . .yes Art Briles. . . you owe CFS big. . . .you now control your destiny and potentially a playoff spot as if you win out (which looks very likely today) you will be both the conference champ and hold the head to head over TCU.   Gotta say, it was fun watching the Stooper brothers meltdown and know they have under achieved yet again.   What can I say ..  .I'm not a dirt burgler fan.   They have Okie lite after the bye then TT before a "what woulda/shoulda" been the defacto confernce title tilt with KSU on 6 Dec but now KSU's best hope is spoiler.

I have no sympathy for TCU. . . they had Baylor beat and piss poor coaching let Baylor off the canvass. . . too bad as they are likely the most dangerous team in the conference today.

#3  KSU   TCU put a pretty good wood shedding on a good WVU team

#4

though they are dropping like a rock. . . still pissed we let them off the hook

Yep, call me a homer but right now the middle of the BigXII pack is largely interchangeable.  By virtue of beating WVU. . .we step in front of them.   Need to win 1 of teh next 2 to go bowling. . .but I like our chances a GREAT DEAL better now.    Signature win for CFS.

On side kick after a Safety?   in a 2 score game?   Sorry Dana. . .that's just dumb but props to CFS for not repeating the coaching failure vs OU when he failed to stop a fake punt.   Our guys were ready.   BTW, you've heard the expression don't let one loss become 2?    Yep, we saw that from WVU. . . . btw, WVU already bowl eligible.

#7   Okie Lite. . . .this sets up a critical game for both teams. . . each needs to win one of the next two to get a post season trip.   Okie Lite is tough at home but I like our chances.

Needs to win out to go bowling. . .they face

who will be looking to make a statement, ISU and Baylor. . .think KK will have better luck nailing a sorority sister than getting a bowl trip.

#9   Kansas. . . . .yep, they beat ISU .. . . color me shocked

#10  ISU. . . . You just lost to one of the worst football teams in all of FBS. . . in fact I doubt Kansas could beat a single ranked FCS team.   Now that's ugly. .

If I had a playoff vote today:

#1  Miss St   vs #4  Baylor

#2

    vs #3 Oregon

First 2 out:

#5  TCU  #6 tOSU

  & ASU in the hunt

In looking at it, who is Bama's "signature" win?

I know it can seem like a "little" thing, but changing punters was a great move. Instant improvement in an area that could have changed the game on one play.

The defense was incredible. Yes, they are a "bend but don't break", but when you can let WVU have that many opportunities on your side of the field and get little out of it, you are a dominant defense. I agree on the 2pt conversion stop as well. That was our defense taking this win, which is what this team needs.

The defense has that killer instinct. We now need that to rub off on the offense in the worst way. Our offense does not have to be great. They just need to be consistently good. There should not be that dramatic of a ebb and flow in an offense.

In the end the game came down to attitude. That attitude is what CFS has been working to instill in this team since he came on board. The defense, ever since Kansas State, has it. They are going to bring the fear on every hit.

While I don't think we have the horses to beat TCU straight up, I think if our defense plays anything like they did against WVU and the offense can get some consistency, we at very least put us in position if TCU stumbles for some reason.

We beat #13 Oregon State in 2012.

Indeed, left that one off the list. . .

They were doing the "home win vs a ranked team" but frankly I thought it was a contrived comment since there haven't been that many home games vs a ranked team.

Regardless. . .another streak bites the dust.

Agree this D plays with an attitude. . .now if we can translate that to our offense in the 2nd half, we'll have something.

I suspect the change in play calling had to do with the defensive adjustments that West Virginia made at half time. They put more in the box and seemed to bring more pressure on Swoopes, which brought out his "deer in the headlights" look.

Obviously, they are afraid to call passes over the middle when he gets that way.

Right now, the missing piece to the puzzle on offense is at quarterback. Until he gets his head on straight, we will have trouble. I think we can look for the remaining teams we play this year try to make us beat them with Swoopes. I would look for a loaded box from now on.
