  Mistakes. . .

Last week it was execution, this week's one word summation . .. .mistakes. . .

And what an alternate universe I woke up in Sat morning. . . . TEXAS OU was not the "biggest game" in the state, that would be a match up of Top 10 Baylor vs Top 10 TCU. . . . .The Egg Bowl is shaping up to be the biggest game of the year. . . .you don't know what the egg bowl is?  No worries, no one else does either. . .that is the year end match up between Ole Miss and Miss State. . .a game that normally only half the CFB fans in Miss give a flip about, much less the biggest game of the season in CFB.   This morning?   Should be no worse than #1 Miss St and #3 Ole Miss. . . . BIZZARO .

Back to TEXAS and Stop with the goofy finger pointing (I don't even need to look at the thread titles anymore). . . there is simply no excuse, top to bottom for losing this game. . . .and spare me the moral victory .. we made progress BS. . . .this was our game to win. . . CFS' signature win.   We absolutely dominated this game, not unlike last year. . .we are flat out a better team.

But we cannot get out of our own way.   Couple of seniors and a soon to be high NFL draft pick junior flat played their hearts out.   Malcom Brown squared, the DT continues his All American season. . .the RB showed why he is the starter. . . Jordan Hicks, Steve Edmond with his best game yet, John Harris (though he had a brain dead penalty). . .Jaxson Shipley, Quandre Diggs Ced Reed.

You guys got hosed.   You should have an OU win for your senior year.

What can you say about the defense, easily the best in the Big XII.   You held OU to 17 points . .. you played more than well enough to win. . . .held OU to 1 for 11 on 3rd downs?   Mind bottling good.    Frankly only one really bad play where Diggs and MT lost coverage .. . . more importantly, defense limited OU to 50 plays .. .you got off the field and gave the O a chance to win it.

TEXAS won the yardage battle, out gaining OU by 250 yards.  .. TEXAS held OU to a 1 for 11 3rd down conversion rate. . .those two stats alone say bet the house on TEXAS. . ..which did easily cover the 14.5 spread.

We saw both sides of Tyronne Swoopes. . . .27 of 44  334 yards 2 TDs but a pick 6 (so 3 TDs)  gained another 50 yards on the ground with some very timely rushes + another TD. . .damn fine day.

we saw the potential start to be realized.   #1 thing I saw was a kid just start to relax and play.    This week when he scrambled or felt pressure, he kept his eyes up and turned that into a couple of amazing/Tony Romo style plays.   He executed his runs better too.. . no hesitation make a decision and go with it.   The flip side of the coin, he's still WAY too late getting the ball out of his hands on passing plays.   He has no one but himself to blame for the pick 6 . . .excellent play, if the ball is thrown on time, likely completion.   Now he did have plays where his WRs failed to secure catches but he didn't let that rattle him and continued to play hard.   But on the next to last play, we saw the youngster, he scrambles for a 1st down but with time the most important issue, he tried to run out of bounds instead of just sliding. . .doubt it would have mattered but an example of being on the wrong side of the learning curve.   Weight all the pros and cons, TS with a great day. . .

Offensive line play was MUCH MUCH better this week.  This might be the 1st RRWar game in the 100 year+ history of the series where the team with the higher rushing total failed to win. . .we outgained OU 175 to 103 ..  .out passed them 334 to 129.

So reading those stats.  .. .how could we possibly lose?

Let's start with dumb penalties, 11 of them.  2 of them back to back (delay of game then false start). . .I didn't count but think we had 5 or 6 false starts.  We had 3 or 4 dropped passes, couple of them were in part because TS was late with his passes giving DBs a chance to make a play.   TS' INT was a late thrown ball allowing teh DB to jump the route.  We had to burn 2 timeouts that would come back to haunt us late in the game.

Special teams continues to plague CFS.   TD return. . .not unlike the punt block TD vs Baylor .. .set the tone for the game.  Don't know what to say here, 2 weeks in a row a key negative.

The old adage is coulda/shoulda/woulda . . . . .woulda was UCLA. . .if not for a play here or there ..we win. . . .Coulda was Baylor. . . we "coulda" won that game. . . .Shoulda is now OU. . . .this game was ours. . .spare me the moral victories. ..we aren't freaking aggies. . . . .this loss is 100% at our own feet.

Now I have not yet glanced at the board but I have no doubt some of our internet geniuses are ripping Shawn Watson for this horrid performance. . . .we put of 500 yards on what was supposedly the best D in teh BigXII and you are ripping the OC?  The OC that clearly won the chess match with Mikey Stoops. .    Mind bottling. .. . .mistake free?   Nope, no one was  (well the D. . .I think they missed 1 play out of 50. . .I'll take that average) . .. .

So here we are, 2-4, we need to go 4-2 the rest of the way if we want to go bowling and those extra practice reps are CRITICAL to this team .. . we should be no worse than 3-3 but reality is we are 2-4. . . .that's the bad news, good news. we are better than everyone of our next 6 opponents. . .yes, better than TCU. . . . No more excuses CFS. . . Watson has coached Swoopes up. . . Wick has your OL playing good enough to win. . . Les needs to work on WRs catching the ball but there is some talent there.   This is the time where the X's and O's ability of an HC are not remotely as important as his ability to motivate his charges.    This is where Mack excelled. . . .sorry, that's the bar, like it or not.    What will CFS do?  Will he build on this or will it get away from him?    Cuz as much as you are better than the next 6 opponents, each one of them can beat you as well.

Big XII

#1  Baylor. . . ..they got a big hand from Patterson (wtf were you thinking not punting) and Crumbie . .. .you have the lead and instead of running the clock out you keep throwing?????     Why I want no part of the air raid. . .you snatched defeat from the jaws of victory.   1st bowl eligible team in the BigXII, playoff hopes alive

#2
t169.r191677.gif
even though they still suck, need 1 win to go bowling, playoff hopes on life support

#3 KSU .. . .they move up cuz you cannot reward HC's that cost their teams wins. . .

#4
t137.r191677.gif
Okie Lite played down to KU's level

#5
t142.r191677.gif
going for it on 4th and 3 to give your opponent a short field?   Worse, you have a mobile QB and you run a fade instead of a roll out, run pass option?    Brain dead

#6
t173.r191677.gif
Nice come back win vs TT. . . .

#7
t163.r191677.gif
Moral victories are for Aggies. . .shoulda won don't count. . . need 4 of the next six to go bowling

#8  ISU   Even though it was Toledo, they got the win

#9
t138.png
Have to win out to go bowling. . . .KK's run of nailing sorority chicks is on life support. . . .

#10  KU   they win out, they can go bowling .. . .who will be there new head man. . .

Next week for the Horns

Iowa State on deck for the Horns.   This is a very real test of CFS' coaching.  Team we should beat, can we get up off the mat knowing we gave this last one away.

PS, not sure how to embed a gif but open this. . . .the PERFECT form tackle, this is how it's done . .thank you Mr Hall . .Jason Hall tackle OU.gif

Nice write up... The last paragraph says it all, you nailed it.  This is how the season will play out.  I'm ready to see it.

John Harris (though he had a brain dead penalty)
In THSFB we play by NCAA rules, too, and I can say definitively that the Holding call on Harris was chickenshit to say the least.  I'd be very surprised if the Line Judge didn't get a Red X or demerit for that call when Big12 officials grade their film.  Just a terrible, game-changing, momentum-killing flag.

Okay, I'm done whining before I start sounding like aggie.  Agree with your other points.  Special teams gotta play much better and it's past time for us to make good 2nd Half adjustments.  We've been outplayed in every game Q3 this year with the possible exceptions of UNT and KU.

To the 2nd point, the 3rd quarter is a bugaboo. . .it is something that has to be fixed. . .

and to the 1st point, replay clearly showed that the hold came after Swoopes passed Harris and he grabbed a hunk of jersey so it was a good call . .. I originally thought the same as you.

Thanks all. . .

I do need to mention one negative on the D. . . they failed to create a single turnover vs either Baylor or OU.   Hall had a pick that he dropped vs OU in the 3rd.

Coulda/Shoulda/Woulda is an excellent categorization. Well done, sir.

There has been almost no blaming playcalling and/or Watson on this board. I saw plenty on Twitter, but this site has stayed free of the groupthink.

True but OB is a larger audience (generally 1500 plus individual reads). . .

Thanks, coulda/shoulda/woulda came to me late last night. . . .

We should be no worse than 3-3. . . .

Sooo...

By this admission that shoulda/coulda/woulda came to you late last night, I believe we can deduct two things.

1. Cheese is creative after a few bourbons.

2. Cheese should drink bourbon before every View From The Cheap Seats he writes from now on.

bourbon is good. . .it's even better when you are drinking a friend's. . . .

PS, should mention that I was at a "moon shine" tasting party last night. . .I kid you not. ..  .

Give me my sipping whiskey any day. . . .

But, that's exactly my point.

Harris' "hold" didn't impact the play whatsoever.  Officials are trained not to call backside holding or those that don't influence the play.  Otherwise, you can literally call holding on every down!

IMO, had Sanchez not been held by Harris, he runs TS down in less than ten yards.  IMO, the pick six could've been prevented if Warrick had more awareness of what was going on around him. He was in position to screen the DB from the ball. The early penalties can be chalked up to the intensity of the UT/OU noise.

Shawn Watson called a great game this week. Hands down, no arguing that. However after seeing the success in the read this week, I'd like to see Texas use it more. The defense was superb. Special teams... I don't even know what to say.

Lots of woulda-coulda-shoulda left on the field this day.

Arkansas should have beaten Bama. Missed FG, fumbled away TD.

L'ville lost by a TD to Clemson

Duke did beat Ga Tech

Iowa held back Indiana

Syracuse fell short.

And UCLA lost and almost lost their DC in a mini-rebellion today caught on TV.

Thanks JB, gotta learn how to enbed gifs one of these days. . .

Here's a thought, we need to win 4 of our next six . .. can we do it?

ISU

WVU

@KSU

@TT

@Okie Lite

TCU

Not sure the order is right but that's who we have to beat.

Kansas State and TCU are the clear challenges. Iowa State and Texas Tech should be solid wins. West Virginia and Okie State can be beat if our defense plays at the level they played against OU and Baylor.

Using Baylor as the indicator, I would say that we would end up anywhere from 4-8 to 6-6.

Using Oklahoma as the indicator, I would say that we would end up anywhere from 6-6 to 8-4.

I assume you mean on offense as our D held Baylor to 21 and their worst game in 2-3 years.

Having said that, I can live with 6-6 or 7-5. . . we make a bowl game, it's mission accomplished in my book. .. .

We REALLY need the extra bowl game practices .. .
