Report: McRaven a Candidate for UT Chancellor

BY TIM TALIAFERRO IN BLOG ON JULY 11, 2014 AT 2:34 P

Paul Burka over at Texas Monthly is reporting (although he doesn’t name his source or sources, and he doesn’t say how good the information is) that the UT System regents have narrowed down the candidate pool for the next chancellor to Richard Fisher and Adm. William McRaven, BJ ’77, Life Member.

Fisher leads the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas; McRaven is commander of U.S. Special Operations command, a Navy SEAL, and a Distinguished Alumnus of UT-Austin. He led the operation that resulted in killing Osama bin Laden. He also gave an unbelievable commencement speech at UT’s graduation this year that has been viewed more than 2 million times. His advice for graduates derived from his SEAL training.

Fisher is not a UT grad. He earned his undergraduate degree from Harvard and an MBA from Stanford.

A spokeswoman for the UT System declined to comment on the report, saying candidate names are confidential.

Both men would represent departures from a pronounced trend in Texas higher education toward former politicians becoming chancellors. Either man would be replacing Dr. Francisco Cigarroa, who announced his resignation earlier this year. Cigarroa intends to return to transplant surgery in San Antonio once a new chancellor is found.

I would not be averse to either of these gentlemen. of course, Admiral McRaven has the pizzazz factor.  If he ends up being the guy, let the Aggies suck on that!

McRaven would be an excellent choice. Then our chancellor could lead a special op over to the cesspool that is college station and clean that mess out once and for all.

Hookem Admiral.

OUTSTANDING . . . . . .

Though in fairness . .. TEXAS was in a can't lose position as both finalists were impressive. . . .

But got my choice at Football HC and Chancellor. . .I am butter . ..on a roll. . .

i don't think the choice has been made yet but i think i'll be very happy with either of those guys.

i like them for different reasons, obviously, but they both appear to be home runs to me.

A Distinguished Alumnus of UT, a Navy Seal, led the operation that got Osama bin Laden...tough credentials indeed!  What's not to like?  Sounds like our man!

As of this morning, there are reports that the chancellor will be chosen today. I'm incredibly inspired by Admiral McRaven and am completely content with the decision if he is selected.

Great options either way... I don't feel we can go wrong here.

However, Admiral McRaven did not lead the operation that got Bin Laden. Those in the ops planning section and ground team leader led the mission. He was in command when it happened and had oversight... That does not detract, even a little, from what the man is or what he has done.

HOOK EM!

I felt like the commencement address was a tryout of sorts. McRaven passed with flying colors.

Fisher is also outstanding, but my money is on the admiral.

Watching the NFL playoffs today with his son

On the morning of the Texas Bowl I was being driven in for Radiation and I look next to me and in a little Mercedes there sits someone that looks exactly like Admiral McRaven My wife was driving so everyone was passing us. When he got past us his license plate confirmed it was, indeed Admiral McRaven.
