The Common Man Prediction Thread – Mormon aggy

The problem is very few of us have confidence this will be fixed this week.
On the other hand, not understanding an opponents half time offensive adjustments and/or not knowing how to defensively adjust yourself is simply being outcoached. Convince me I am wrong.

EDIT: I promised myself I would stay away from these rants, yet here I am.
Rod Babers does a great job of breaking this type of thing down on the Blitz (24/7) and Inside Texas.

We had a major problem with in breaking routes the past few years, particularly year 1 of the new staff. Things had been better in that regard until we played Houston.

We have struggled with crossers and mesh routes the entirety of this new staff and it was a very big problem last week.

Our defensive backfield was pretty decimated last week and that may have contributed to these problem areas becoming huge issues. With some health this weekend, and presumably some more coaching, hopefully we have firmed things up there. If we have, I'd say hats off to the staff on addressing the pressing needs.

Starting in 2021, a discerning football enthusiast will observe our defensive staff being out coached time and again. This was glaringly obvious in the UH game.
The defense, on the other hand, has looked elite - even though sporadically. But mostly because our talent simply overwhelmed our opponents.
The behind-the-scenes talks have not been positive regarding our defensive strategies. Just saying.
Do you sense a change coming in PK's spot?

I am far from saying our defensive staff is perfect but we have certainly seen improvement over the last 3 years.

1st two years of the staff we really struggled to defend the edge in the run game. That was a big question coming into this year and that issue has seemingly been solved.

Dillon Gabriel gave us fits running the ball and the staff seemed to have a much better plan this last week to defend Donovan Smith and the QB run game wasn't an issue at all.

Crossing routes killed us last week, lets see if the staff has been able to address it.

Overall, I think we have moved in the right direction overall. Probably due to improved talent through recruiting and also greater understanding of the scheme as players have had more time in it. If we continue in this direction, this defense should continue to get better and better as there become fewer and fewer holes in their game.

Maybe. We'll see.

In 2021 would coach Boom's defense been the worst in the history of UT football? Just saying our defensive coaches were overwhelmed, disorganized and clueless. Sure, the players were not elite, but they were D-1 recruits and they were at Texas. We weren't Abilene Christian or SE Louisiana.
We basically have the same coaches today. Scary.

IMO, and in the opinion of more than few powers-that-be, we already have a juggernaut. At least talent wise.
At the starter level, we do. At the backup level, still some question marks at S especially. Just inexperience overall 2-3 deep.

With the Portal, I'm not sure you can have experienced, studs waiting their turn to start. I really don't see 5* waiting until their junior year to break into the starting lineup. Kids want to play now! They think they are ready to play.

I really want to see how the next few years play out with 5* and playing time for UT and other P5 teams.

Our rush defense has been pretty stellar this season. I saw a stat that the long wyoming run and Dillon Gabriels account for like 25% of all the rushing yardage we have given up on the year.

The pass defense problems seem to be communication issues. I think that is probably both on the coaching staff (teach the players the roles and how to communicate it clearly) and the players (failing to do the communication and route pass offs properly).

BYU does a lot of crossing routes and mesh concepts so we will be able to see this week if the team had adjusted and improved in the regard over the last week.
Somebody mentioned that the 2 DB coaches were hired before PK was hired and that the pass coverages run by this defense is different than the ones run by PK at UW. That may be a factor on why the communication, especially between the 3 levels of the defense has not always been optimal.

The only way (disregarding turn overs) that BYU can beat us is through the air. This game rests upon the shoulders of coach PK.
Malik has a talented and strong arm. That should lead to Sark calling a few more streak routes down the field. Hopefully the OL is healthier this week and can give him a clean pocket.
Sark should call a balanced offense with a few shots down the field and be able to adjust in case BYU does something new (that's an excuse that needs to go away).
Texas 31
BYU 10

I do, last year with the exception of Washington , the offense did enough to win games, Sark knows he is on the precipice of building a juggernaut here and if the defense keeps us from the CFP Sark may go shopping for a DC
are you available and what would it take? a lot of brisket?

interesting. If this is true, then that's a HUGE coaching problem that Sark & PK need to fix.
