Longhorn News/Discussion (Non-Recruiting)

Man it’s amazing how much recruiting has changed since the Mack Brown days. Back then Mack rarely went out of the state of Texas to get players. He would get 6 or 7 out of the top 10 players in the state. Even before the portal and NIL it started to change. More schools were coming after these Texas kids and more Texas kids were willing to go out of state. Now fast forward to the portal and NIL deals and kids are getting offered so much to leave the state that you aren’t going to get 6 out of the top 10 anymore. I’ve watched Saban’s recruiting for years nation wide and we weren’t doing it. I said several years ago if you are going to play with the top teams you’re going to have to do like they do. Sark is definitely doing that and it’s going to work for us. Sark saw what Saban was doing when he was with him that he took good notes. Give me the top Texas kids and I’d win the national championships every year but you can’t get them anymore. It’s a balancing act with the Texas high school coaches but you have to go nation wide if you want to win.

Mack did well, for sure. But he left a lot to be desired in some areas. For instance, he placed way too much importance in having the class decided by summer. That simply wasn't important, but he made it so. It was important to Mack I suppose because it allowed him to relax. I don't think Mack ever put in the recruiting time that Sark does. How many times have we read a recruit say Sark was calling them each week? Mack never did that.

Our time in the Big 12 did a couple of things – 1. It created a level playing field with teams like TCU and Baylor. We beat them, no big deal. They beat us, they get the nation's attention. 2. Because of 1, players who would not normally go to a school that hasn't won a national championship in 90 years, gave them a hard look instead. So the bottom feeders got better.

Now, they're trapped in a conference with schools who all have the same insignificant existence on the national scene. They have nothing to gain by beating each other.

I'm glad we changed that.

Mack will probably be the best recruiting head coach at Texas in the terms of class rankings. Getting kids to commit early was his strength and ultimately his downfall. Senior yr evaluations were lacking and ultimately some of his early signees were maxed out in HS.

Sark's approach is more complete in my opinion. He's filling positions of need and he is stacking talent year over year. Also, recruiting nationally is something Mack didn't do or really have to, but I think it's smart. Different geographic regions have natural strengths at certain positions and Sark is doing a good job at taking advantage of it.

Good post SHA. I agree. Mack had a couple of junior days and he would invite the guys they were interested in and offer them and most of them would accept so recruiting was pretty much over. I’ve lost count of how many recruiting days Sark has. It seems like every weekend is a huge weekend. These weekends take alot to put on and make every family feel like they are the most special thing in the world. I read what a bunch of families and recruits say about Sark and they like him alot. I hear a guy like Gary Patterson talk good about Sark and how hard he works. If he doesn’t succeed here it won’t be because he didn’t put his best effort into it.
Total agree with what you said about the Big 12. If we beat Baylor most fans say it wasn’t bad enough or didn’t look good or whatever. But oh hell if Baylor beats us it’s their national championship game. Those teams are putting more money into their programs and are all hiring good coaches and paying them up so they make them alot better. Now with the portal those lower level teams don’t have to stay bad forever anyway. Kansas hires a good coach and he hits the portal and he makes them better quicker. Times they are a changin.
I just hope Sark can keep stacking these recruiting class because there isn’t many easy days in the SEC…….and believe me every team eyeballs that Texas game on their schedule.

I always said if we can’t get Saban we need to get someone that’s been under him. Coaches that are around him see everything about how he runs his program. Sark is a smart guy. He learned. He brought a bunch of coaches with him that had been under Saban so they know what the day to day is supposed to look like. Sark and staff are trying to build us to look like Alabama. Big huge lineman. Big physical good RB’s. Sark has said many times that he wants to be able to run the football when he wants to run the football and everybody in the stadium knows you are going to run the football and defenses can’t do anything about it. Knock their ass off the line of scrimmage when you need a yard. I am greatly hoping he keeps stacking talent and we will win.

Mack recruited really well until he got lazy (Coach February) and started relying on recruiting services. Notably the guy from Louisiana, I think, that got Oregon and almost us, in trouble. He was never able to fully recover from that. I could continue but everyone knows the story from there.
