I'm so glad we're leaving.
Yeah Connecticut seems odd. It seems like they are considering lots of schools. Presumably this is a potential contingency plan for if the Pac 12 doesn't implode.
The main difference is Sanders is pushing out most of his players vs a handful or two like most other top schools.
My reading of the article says he is against pushing players into the portal because it hurts the student athletes life plans. Well for better or for worse that ship has sailed. Every coach that wants to win is going to optimize their roster in every way available to them.
Only time will tell how this works out. If he is able to turn the program around within a short period then all the fans and the administration will be delighted. If he can't turn things around fairly quickly then this could be accelerate his demise.
The article also sounds like it says a first year coach can remove players from the athletic roster as long as they can remain on scholarship. I wonder if that means they can continue to be students at that university for 4 years to complete their degree. If so, that sounds like a pretty good deal. If the player can't get picked up by another team out of the portal, maybe they can stay in school on scholarship.
That's the first I have heard of that, but in general that sounds like a great thing. I know they do that with players that can no longer play because of injuries. Seems like they could make that available to all scholarship athletes whos athletic scholarship aren't renewed.
Most of the players pushed into the portal at Texas would be unlikely to take advantage of this, since they are likely to be able to pursue their dreams elsewhere. For lower tier schools requiring scholarships for surplus athletes could put additional stress on their budgets.

Thats not quite correct. When players enter the portal, they are no longer on the team they were on before. If they don't land anywhere, they can ask to come back but the program isn't required to take them.
I think what he was saying is, those players Sander ran off should have been able to stay and get their degrees on CU's dime.
When college football began, it was about achieving in academics while playing sports for the school. Thats not how it is anymore. The education has become nothing more than a distraction.
