UIL Realignment

@Eastexhorn

do you remember back in the day when the 5A (today's 6A) district in East Texas included Texarkana, Longview, Pine Tree, Marshall, Nacogdoches, Lufkin, Tyler Lee and John Tyler?

That was a district with meaningful rivalries.

Yes. J. Street and Joe D. Norwood were senior QBS same year.

Also saw at Grim stadium Earl throw a TD pass to beat Texarkana 7-0. Only loss and proably best Tiger team ever.

In 1969, my uncle was the head coach at Dallas Woodrow Wilson High. He had a hot shot LB/RB name John Paul McCrumbly. Family in East Texas didn't often get to see his games up in Dallas, so we had a caravan of about 7 cars going to Texarkana to see this game.

Wilson was ranked, so was Texarkana. It was an unusual matchup for pre-district but I remember my uncle saying they had a spot open on the schedule late and Texarkana was the only team also needing to fill that date.

Texas High wiped the field with Woodrow Wilson that night. Just utterly dominated them. My uncle's team had about 8 players leave the game with injuries and several were having to go both ways. It was a lopsided 34-3 game or some such. I don't remember what Texas High did that year in the playoffs, or even if they made the playoffs (1 team per district), but Wilson ended up losing in the state-semi finals that year.

I remember, even as young as I was, I was impressed with that Texas High team that night.

I remember seeing one of Daingerfield's best teams ever that didn't make the playoffs. It was 1977. Daingerfield went 9-1 that year and didn't win the district.

Last game of the year had Daingerfield and Atlanta both undefeated and playing for it all. Atlanta had the heralded Phillip Epps (later of Green Bay fame) and Daingerfield had all-state John Rogers (also went pro). The game was played in Atlanta.

Despite both teams having such explosive offenses and were killing people each week by huge margins, Atlanta ended up with a 6-3 win that night. Defense won the day. And it could have gone either way. Daingerfield was driving for a score as the clock expired.

Even today people say those were the two best teams in the state that year in class AAA. Only one made the playoffs.

Man, those were the days . . .

Amen those were the days. With only one team making playoffs district meant something. Some teams missed the playoffs that could have won state. Followed local teams in playoffs Hooks, DeKalb Alanta, Linden K. , Paul Peweit, Dangerfield and Texarkana. Put a lot of miles on old fords but great times.

One team per district?  That is wild!  "Back in my day" lol (mid 90's; class of 94), 1 division per classification (1A-5A), 6 team districts with 2 from each district making the playoffs. And I thought that was competitive.

Okay, here's my story from the 70's related to only having 1 team make the playoffs.

Back then Sherman was in the same district as Plano. In 1976, Sherman went 10-0 and beat Longview in the first round of the playoffs 10-0. The next week, we played Temple in Texas Stadium. Sherman led by 21 points with less than 4 minutes to play. Somehow Temple scored 3 touchdowns in the last 4 minutes and ties Sherman 35-35. However, Temple advanced via most penetrations or most first downs, which was the tie-breaker back then. Temple went on to play for the state championship that year but lost 10-0.

Now, on to 1977. Sherman and Plano tie their district game that year and both teams ended up 9-0-1. But, guess what? Sherman lost out again on the tie-breaker and Plano advanced to playoffs whlle Sherman sit at home.

So think about this. In a 2 year span, Sherman's record was 20-0-2. So despite not losing a game over 2 years, all they have to show for it is one win in the playoffs and one tie in the playoffs. That's sorta of crazy.

In our day, no divisions. Just straight 5A, 4A, 3A, 2A, 1A and class B. One team would win the district and advance to the playoffs. Everyone else started basketball.

Yes remember when Dangerfield, DeKalb,NB,Hooks & Clarksville were in same district and C'ville was ranked #1 in state & came to Harold Ward Stadium in DeKalb. Beat them NB played us  tuff as did Dangerfield. We were breezing thru playoff until we met team called Plano. They were 2A back then,UIL could not keep up with their enrollment, were the like Frisco.

We played Plano in the '67 playoffs and beat them. I think we lost two weeks later though.

Pewitt was the only team to beat Daingerfield during the '68 state championship run. I think it happened in week 1 or 2.

Same thing happened to Hooks and Simms, team that beat in state finals jumped twoclasses next year. Belive it was Deerpark.

Did the DeKalb team have brothers playing Mc or some thing like that. If so my buddy and I foolowed them till they lost.

Pewitt had a good team that year. They went 7-3, ended up 8-4 after losing in the playoffs.

Daingerfield was still coming to terms with desegregation. Struggling. During halftime of the Dekalb game the week after the Pewitt loss, HC Bill Lane told his team what was up. DF didn't lose another game.

Beat Lufkin Dunbar for the state title, 7-6, in the pouring rain.

Could be long ago and I was never good at remembering names. Only RB I can remember is Chris Moiser ( spelling) very fast but easy to tackle per friend son from New Boston.

Anyone remember the great Joe Wylie from Henderson?

He went dirt burglar, but he was something else in HS.

Hey Mark! What do you mean by the highlighted statement?  I ask because I read it and instantly thought of "Remember the Titans" lol.  Plus I also find that time period interesting.  While we often put segregation at the back our minds, it honestly wasn't too long ago.  I attended the same elementary school as my sweet mother, who turns 70 this year. She has a framed picture of her kindergarten class. She also has a picture of my kindergarten class. The difference being 1) her picture is in black and white and 2) my class was both black and white (get it ?)

Damn, I'm a year older than your Mother ?

Yes was at that game. Didn't Dunbar band play Horse all night?
