Game Thread: #12 Oklahoma State @ #25 Texas Longhorns

When it was obvious we had lost momentum, he pulls off Card's red shirt for 1 f**king play?
I’m not sure quite how to read your response.  It comes across angry.

1 play?  Where did I say 1 play?

If Card is redshirting, that’s news to me.  It seems to me he was our starter and now he’s our second string QB.  Your backup QB typically isn’t a redshirt candidate.  Also, Card redshirted last year

You may be right about the redshirt.  I know there’s the whole Covid year thing... but whatever the case we’re friends here... no?

Seriously though, today was terrible and I’m super irritated, but let’s not drive off a cliff. There are deep-seeded issues with this team, and it’s going to take more than a season to fix.
Sir... I think you meant it’s going to take more than a decade to fix it.  Serious problems with this team started in 2010.  And I’d kind of like to see definite movement in the right direction.  And I, with dillhorn, am also driving off a proverbial cliff.

Sark's gonna get 3-4 years regardless of what we think, anyway, so we may as well sit back and enjoy the ride. Or not. It's golf season.
The weather the past couple days has me thinking about golf... kayak, yard work.... something other than watching us blow a huge 4th quarter lead.

They look bad but they are still my team, will watch and root for them as long as I am able.
Yea, my first Longhorn game to attend was the Jan 1, 1962 Cotton Bowl when #3 Texas beat #5 Ole Miss 12-7.

Was 10 years old and I've been a fan ever since. I'm just an old diehard fan who is also going to root for my team as long as I am able. Through thick and thin.

Maybe I didn't phrase it correctly... I'm not sure Casey's advantage over Card with his mobility is greater than Card's advantage over Casey with his arm.

The problem we saw with Card at arkie has repeated itself over the last two games with Casey. In other words, neither QB is good enough to rise above the current limitations of our oline.

Having a mobile QB is one solution for a bad oline. Another solution is running quick outs and other other quick throws requiring a pretty strong arm. We saw today what can happen when the ball doesn't get there fast enough.

Part of that may be Sark's system, which leans toward slow developing pass plays. However Sark may also not trust Casey to make those throws - deep slants and outs that can turn into dangerous passes quickly. So he gets limited to safer throws - long balls and bubble screens.

So my overall point is that if Card can make those throws that Casey can't, then it's an alternate solution for a bad oline. But we haven't seen enough of Card to know if he can make those throws or not. We've heard about the arm strength, but need to see it in a game to know elm if that opens up more of the passing game.

So I don't agree that we've seen all that Card can do. But defenses are learning how to completely shut down Casey running the rpo at times. We can't win that way either.
Card had two games to show his arm. Sark, who is supposed to be an expert on all things QB, replaced him. IMO, Casey has a better deep ball than Card showed. Rewatch the OU game. So I'm not sure what you're selling, but I'm not buying.

What you saw yesterday was a kid trying to make something happen and taking a risk. He's human. Damn him.

The problem we saw with Card is he's light on the leadership, run ability is quite limited, and the OL doesn't give the time for a drop back passer to be effective. We covered all of this weeks ago and the truth hasn't changed.

Card can't make the throws that Casey can't. I think that idea is your real problem here. Take a look at Card's TD throws and their distance. Then take a look at Casey's. It leaves you with no point here.

Well that didn't work out did it? CT is the below average QB I thought he was. Card got one half of judgement, CT has sucked in two of last three games, time to go back to Card and commit to the future.
1. Well, yes it did. He wanted to replace a QB who was winning. The outcome did not change the situation where this was suggested.

2. I don't know if CT is below average, but I'm pretty sure he's the best UT has.

3. Card stunk when given the shot. Louisiana beat Nicholls Friggin State by 3 the following week – AT HOME. That was not the win you thought it was.

4. Losing is not committing to the future. There is a different team playing when Thompson is at QB. The one Card played with was pretty bad. Card's leadership skills need some serious development. And perhaps Card should join Thompson in the film room some time. Lord knows he needs it.

5. When you don't go the extra mile or refuse/choose not to – you're not going to be your team's best option. Card's back up worked harder than he did and took his job. It probably all comes back to the film room where you'll find Casey but won't find Card. Unless Card decided to change that this week.

It's interesting that you throw out a bunch of intangibles that you likely know nothing about. You know how the team feels (I'd guess that our lack of offensive production has killed this season) and seem to know who isn't showing up to meetings? Not once have I heard anyone compliment Casey's arm strength, we heard lot's of that about Card. You don't get to be a #2 run threat QB not being able to run, and it's unlikely you know more than the scouts that have Card pegged for the NFL. Card had 1 good game and 1 partial game that the whole team stunk. The playbook has changed since then. You may not be buying, but as usual there are lot's of buyer's for the 2nd string QB when your team is losing.

No, I heard the announcers talking about how the team looked and played differently with Thompson. Later, Sark bluntly said "Thompson moves this offense."

Just because you don't know or can't remember, doesn't mean you're onto something when someone else makes a statement of weeks-old facts.

I'm not going to address the rest of what you said. Its clear that you need to follow this team closer than you currently do.

Even though I agree overall, there is one aspect which can't be true... We haven't seen everything Card can do after two games. By the end of the season I'd like to have them both get a good amount of starts to know what we have going into next season. We almost needed Card anyway on Saturday, and he's barely seen the field since week 2.

Sark should treat our porous oline as if defenses are going to blitz *every* play. We either don't have hot routes/safety valves, or neither QB knows who they are. There are ways to get the ball out quicker than relying on either QB to run for their life.

There used to be a poster, rpongetti, who would break down stuff like this back in the day... be nice to have it now. Actually that's not a bad idea for the site owners if they are looking for value adds that folks would pay for.

I remember him well. He was/is an attorney I think. But yeah, he knew how to break down what happened the previous Saturdays. At one time, he was giving up some pretty good recruiting info, too.

Do players really need to hang out in the film room with HUDL being accessible everywhere? Unless, of course, Casey is dissecting film with Sark and/or Milwee. Just saying.

We rarely hit on quick throws - slants, digs, outs....whatever. Casey needs to communicate better with the WRs on this. TEs had 0 catches last week, too. Why aren't they involved in the quick passing game?

Texas (and I’m sure most schools) have such a sophisticated film system that players and coaches can get so much more of what they need to see faster.

For example:  We’re are playing Baylor next.  They can pull up all of Baylor’s pass plays for whatever time frame you want.  They can look with the click of a button all of Baylor’s 3rd down plays for this year or farther back if you want.  They can watch all of their 1st plays.   In other words they can query exactly what they want to see and get really specific about it so you don’t have to sit through a bunch of stuff that you don’t want to see.  If it’s a new coach like Arnada,  they can watch what LSU’s defense was doing on 3rd downs since Aranda was there.  It’s on a huge screen like a home theater screen.  Each position has their own room where they get into what they want to see.  They can see any team in the country and any situation they want.  They chart percentages on every situation there is.
It’s really a hell of a system.  Better than when I played and they had on old film on a reel and they would rewind it about 50 times for each play.
Hudl may do alot of the same stuff but what they have at the field house is amazing.  They aren’t pulling plays out of a hat………..everything has been looked at enormously during the week.
