So, assuming both are equal or close, I understand the concept of starting the younger one, but there are other factors to be considered here. If Card starts, Thompson will probably transfer, since he has already come close before, leaving us with a true freshman backup. I don't believe Card would transfer. Casey has waited his turn and shown he can be a winner in game situations. Unless there is clear separation, I would start Thompson first and give him a chance, even if I thought Card has more potential. 

Casey might still transfer if Hudson replaces him later, but at least he got a shot at it. 

I just don't like the thought of putting all the eggs in one basket. 

 You can't let the threats of transfer dictate your coaching. Play the best players. Once the season starts, the chances of anyone leaving, especially a QB are greatly reduced. (Not sure on the rules). The time to learn a new system dictates most will transfer in the off season. 

 Either way we appear to have several good freshman QB's, and a few players that were QB's in high school also.

The coach needs to figure out how to get the most wins this season and moving forward. I agree that the transfer portal makes this decision more difficult. Historically it was more difficult for a player to transfer and so the decision was more straight forward since the backup was unlikely to transfer mid season.

 No doubt, every team would love the luxury of blocking so well that the QB can sit back and fire away. Alabama had every tool on offense you could ever want. Hopefully Sark can do some of that magic here.

 NFL wants passer 1st, and players want to play in a system that sets them up for that. College, following High School is much more of an anything goes style.  Maybe if NFL would open up the game I might watch. No, never mind.

The NFL has opened it up. Kyler, Lamar, Mahomes, Josh Allen those Guys are some of the better QBs and they use their legs. The NFL game has changed.

I would say it is changing, but hasn’t changed fully.

I don't start Thompson because of the threat of him transferring. That would be rewarding bad behavior and allowing it to dictate your decision making.

I think that Thompson, Card and Sark know that regardless of who starts against UL in the opener, both guys are likely to see a lot of playing time. If Card doesn't move the offense, see if Thompson can and vice-versa. And then there's the injury thing that inevitably happens during the course of a  season.

Whoever loses the job has a chance to get it back and when he does, he can make it where its no longer a question.

Two. And one is a walk-on. Cole Lourd (walk on) has impressed some during camp. And Sark singled out Wright as having made tremendous strides. I like Wright and wouldn't be bothered if he had to play at some point. He's got some Colt in him.

Cole Lourd could be interesting in the future. He had scholarship offers from LSU and Ole Miss. His dad is LSU grad; mom is UT grad and uncle and grandfather played at UT. His uncle is managing director of CAA. His dad is money manager to the stars. He didn’t need a scholarship. He wanted to learn to QB from Sark.

He was recruited as one thing and asked to be something else. That's all on Mack.

They did say they were going to release a projected 1-2 roster. If so it means Sark isn't worried about the transfer otherwise he would hold out longer.

TFB's notes from the most recent scrimmage. Didn't comment on who had the better scrimmage of the QBs, but said Thompson had two TD passes to Josh Moore. Said he had a much better scrimmage than last time. Ditto for the OL.

A friend of mine was talking to a blue chip HS QB that was trying to decide where to play in college. He was down to Alabama and North Carolina (close to home). He told the kid it depended on his self confidence. If you go to Alabama there will be a “new stud recruit” every year you are there. If you’re ok with a constant open competition for your position go to Bama. If you can’t handle that type of situation go to NC. The kid picked NC.
