There has been plenty of people that have said good things about Ash, however this is what makes me nervous about hiring him as DC.

Since Ash only has three seasons as a defensive coordinator on his resume in conferences with a much lower level of offensive innovation than the Big 12 — and no such experience since 2013 — there is cause for pessimism that Ash is prepared to turn around the Longhorns defense.

I'm inclined to think Barrah will tell Riley to run for the hills before Jerrah can put him under his spell. lol

I don't see Urban being interested in this unless he just wants to do NFL before he's done. But I don't see it. He's made for the college world.

Nevermind, just read a story where local radio station had to cut off on-air interview with Jerrah because he kept cussing. He was defending JG, calling it his own fault. lol Said he wasn't going to "give up" on JG anymore than he'd give up on himself.

I think he's serious. At least in his own mind.

Honestly there just isn't a perfect DC candidate out there.

I like Ash because he's had big conference experience and also been a HC. This can help Herman because he's still a relatively a young HC and can use a bit more experience on the staff at times.  

Especially if we take a flyer on a young guy like Harrell, who is a higher risk/higher reward type of coordinator.  Harrell may need help at times from Herman, and we've seen what happens when both sides of the ball get wobbly. 

Ash strikes me as solid prospect, even if his ceiling may be a bit lower. We need someone who can come in and make a defense out of what we have, not what we want. 

For all the talk about 3, 4, (or even 5) down lineman... the fact is the only chess pieces we have are in the locker room. We're heavy in secondary recruits and light on lineman. We can't run everything, even if we think another defensive look will work better. 

There's a pragmatism that has to come with the next DC, and the need to be a solid defense quickly. We don't have a mulligan year to recruit and mold a defense (Herman gave up that option when he kept Orlando). The next guy has to come in and, at least for a season, put out the best defense he can with what we have.

Just curious.... why do you say his ceiling is lower?

He is #1 on my wish list... for what it’s worth.

That's just a perception based on his previous defenses and the general consensus of his upside versus others.

For instance when people talk about Scalley they discuss him in terms of bringing in a shutdown defense. Whether he can do that outside of Utah... no one really knows. Either way Scalley is perceived as having a higher upside, or a higher ceiling. 

That doesn't mean Ash wouldn't do a better job overall. If we had the offense operating a high level then maybe we take a chance on a guy like Scalley. But, not right now.

Not only is there not a perfect candidate for DC, there are probably at least 10 who could come in and do a helluva of a job. And I would say the same thing about the OC position. And there are certainly good candidates for both positions whose names we haven't even heard yet.

So, who might be the other OC candidates? I read the reports that say Herman has 3 or so candidates to interview but is seems like it has been Harrell or bust for many. 

I'm sure there will be some sour on Scalley but his offense didn't do him any favors. The failed 4th and 2 call at the 50 by Utah when the defense had just forced an Oregon punt from their end zone and was playing well was a real head scratcher to me

I covered Ash when he spent 1 year on Bret Bielema's staff at Arkansas in 2013. He's solid and would be terrific DC at Texas. He stayed one year at Arkansas and quickly hit the exit outta Fayetteville. On the OC search, I think there are better fits than Graham Harrell that would utilize the run game more, and if it were me, I'd be interviewing Rhett Lashley at SMU, who is part of the Malzahn tree. Malzahn has always built his offense around a power run game, using the spread to create space for the backs and QBs. With the RBs that we hopefully have next season, we need an OC who believes in run-first. Another plus is that Lashley has a relationship with Hand from their days at Auburn.
