5 Thoughts Following The Win Over TCU

That’s two weeks in a row this team has proved me wrong. Maybe I should just keep  picking against them each week. This was a better opponent this week and a much more meaningful game in the grand scheme of things and this team answered the bell in a big way.

Getting The Purple Monkey (Frog) Off Their Back

TCU has had Texas’ number for several years now and it’s been no secret with how Gary Patterson and his staff have been beating that drum in the ears of recruits. Over the recent years, Texas has been out coached, out schemed, out hustled, and just about anything else you can think of in matchups with TCU. It seemed like anything that could go wrong would give wrong and things would get ugly quick. That changed today in Austin.

Big hat tip to Todd Orlando and his defense as they found a way to limit the explosive TCU offense to less than 20 points and force Shawn Robinson to turn the ball over several times, including one that led to an offensive touchdown. Orlando’s bunch kept the game tight even with the offense struggling at times, but they got the ball back in their hands and gave them extra opportunities. That leads me to my next point.

Winning The Turnover Battle

Texas didn’t just win the turnover battle today, they dominated it. The Texas safety tandem of Brandon Jones and Caden Sterns combined for all four defensive turnovers today and Sterns almost scored his first collegiate touchdown, but stepped out before he could. We knew going in that Robinson was prone to turning the ball over and he did it three times, with each being very key to swinging the momentum and contributing to what ended up being the final score. Speaking of Sterns, if people didn’t know who he was before today they probably do now. That kid is a future All-American and a three year player. Enjoy him in Austin while you can.

On the other side of the ball, Sam Ehlinger and the Texas offense took care of the ball all day long and didn’t turn it over to a defense that knows how to force errors and is very well coached. While the offense may have had struggles today, they did not give TCU extra opportunities to beat the call via the turnover.

Playmakers At WR Come Up Big

It’s impossible to tell the story of this win today without mentioning Collin Johnson and LJ Humphrey. The dynamic duo combined for 11 catches for 204 yards and two HUGE touchdowns that gave Texas the lead and put away the Frogs down the home stretch. Plain and simple, these two came up huge despite having all kinds of coverages rolled their way and when Ehlinger needed a big play he went their way. Humphrey and Johnson continue to impress early on and are looking like one of the top receiver duos in the Big 12.

Learning To Finish

Remember how I said previously that this team needs to learn how to finish off quality opponents? Well don’t look now, but in back to back weeks this Texas team has not only beat a ranked opponent, but they have delivered knockout blows and made the teams wave the white flag. Gary Patterson opted to punt with time left on the clock and his team down on the scoreboard. He (and his team) tapped out. They said NO MÁS. With the way TCU has been treating Texas lately, I didn’t think I’d see that with my own eyes any time soon. This team is getting better each week and they have a chance to get another monkey off their back next week in Manhattan. Just a different shade of purple.

Building Momentum

Winning last week against USC was huge for recruiting and confidence. This week’s win over TCU is the USC win multipled ten times. This was a win over a conference and in-state rival who has built their brand off of dominating Texas over the past few years and now you take the shine off that pitch and have a chance to change the momentum. If recruits and opponents weren’t paying attention after last week, then they certainly are now. Texas isn’t back, but they are certainly getting better. They should be favored over a struggling Kansas State team next week, but it’s the venue that should frighten everyone. They have a chance to win in Manhattan and put together a 3 game winning streak heading into Dallas. That would make an already big game even bigger.

Next week will be a new test.  Not only will they be playing in Manhatten, but they will have to learn to win on the road being favored and probably ranked. Recent history shows Texas struggles when those two things happen.  They usually play better as the underdog.  That will not be the case this week.  Have to figure out a way how to keep playing with an edge.

AUSTIN -- The Longhorns delivered a monumental 31-16 victory over No. 17 TCU on Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, which snapped Texas' four-game losing streak to the Horned Frogs.

Here were some notable things the Longhorns said following Saturday's game:

Tom Herman

On the significance of the win:

"This is just one step. One step. This is not the end all, be all. This is a good win against another ranked opponent -- an opponent that's going to win a lot of games the rest of their season as well. And I got a ton of respect for Coach Patterson and his program. But we're going to celebrate it, enjoy it and we're going to wake up tomorrow knowing we got to go on the road for the first time in a month against a Kansas State team that's always tough to handle, and especially when they're playing at home. That is a tough, tough place to play. So, again, really proud of our guys for their composure, their grit, their continued fight throughout the course of the game and the ups and downs and excited to see the progress that we make this week."

On how Texas' defensive backs, who collected four turnovers, played:

"It was fearless. That's the one thing that we have been preaching for awhile around here, is when you're confident in your preparation, you're confident in the way that you've been trained, you're confident in your teammates and their preparation and their ability to do their job, then it should be very easy and fun to play fearless and to not hesitate and to not think, especially in big moments. Tonight, I saw those guys in the backfield not hesitate, not think, not stutter their feet, but just go make plays and I was proud of them for that."

On the play of freshman safety Caden Sterns:

"Caden Sterns -- hell of a football player. Hell of a football player. I don't know what he's going to grade out. I got to watch the film, assignment-wise, all that stuff, but he's always around the football. He's got a natural knack -- he's got great ball skills, so being around the football is one thing but being able to make plays on it is another. And then he's a great tackler as well."

Collin Johnson

On what this team is figuring out:

"For me, just after beating USC the way we did, coming in here and doing what we did today, it shows kind of the maturity of this team. We got a special bunch, in my opinion. I'll go to war with these guys any day."

On his 31-yard, diving touchdown catch that gave Texas the lead in the 3rd quarter:

"They gave me a post. I was like, 'Man, I'm not the fastest, but I'm just gonna lay out and try to make the play.' I was happy to just make the play for the team. It felt good. It felt good."

Brandon Jones

On Texas not struggling to handle prosperity unlike in the past:

"I think we all have just bought in. Every position, every player on the team. We've bought in, and we know what we're capable of doing. I think the difference between now and the past is we're just really having fun. And I think when you have fun, you're more confident, you're out there playing with swagger and you really trust the (plays) you're able to make."

Gary Johnson

On Texas forcing four turnovers:

"When you get great push up front with your big guys, and it allows us as linebackers to get free, it makes it easier for our defensive backs. Once you put pressure on a young guy, you force him into bad throws, and that's kind of what happened. We capitalized on that."

Caden Sterns

On how comfortable he's been as a true freshman starter through four games:

"I think I always felt comfortable just because I just pride myself on -- this is the same game I've been playing since I was young. It's no different. Just a bigger stage a little bit with better athletes, and that's when watching film and doing the little stuff matters."

Sam Ehlinger

On if it means more that Texas finally beat TCU:

"I think it's sweet because it was the first game of Big 12 play. I don't think it means anything more because of who it was. I think it means a lot to us because we played well on both sides of the ball and finished."

On if this is a signature win:

"I wouldn't call it a signature win. I'd say it's just another one for us."

If Texas can continue to improve on the fundamentals passing, blocking, punting they can compete or beat any team in the country. The coaches and players must continue to work hard pile up a few more wins over the next couple of weeks and then start to believe that they are headed to greatness..Hook'em  I loved seeing patterson so pissed off

I really want to see Ehlinger have a better grasp of the Zone Read. He left so many yards and opportunities on the field due to misreading the DE. It is frustrating to watch week in, week out.

That said, he managed the game and did not turn the ball over. That is huge.

Big and important win for this program. Possibly bigger than last week’s over USC.

Yea one game at a time BUT, would Game day be at cotton bowl in 2 weeks if UT handles K-State? Looked it up and it’s be the first time since 2012 Texas is 4-1 going into the game.... no looking over K-State, just asking

Does this mean were back to being a football school?

Texas Finally Breaks Through Against TCU in Another Positive Step Forward for Longhorns

You don’t have to say Texas is “back.” But it’s O.K. to admit Tom Herman’s team is better after beating TCU 31–16 in Austin on Saturday, ending four years of frustration. The Horned Frogs were on a four-game winning streak against the Longhorns, outscoring them a staggering 153–33 heading into this matchup.

Now, the Longhorns are on their own winning streak—their first three-game winning streak since 2014, which includes convincing double-digit wins over top-25 teams in USC and now TCU. This one against the Horned Frogs is arguably more significant given the landscape of the Big 12 and power in the state of Texas. TCU is a league rival and has been a tough opponent under Gary Patterson, and Texas's win now sets up a much more exciting and interesting Big 12 race with the Red River Rivalry versus Oklahoma on Oct. 6.

Texas’s defense was dominant, and despite its middling ranking in the Big 12 (fifth in yards allowed per game with 359), it forced four turnovers and was strong on third down, limiting TCU to six conversions on 16 tries.

Momentum ultimately swung for the Longhorns during a 2:55-minute span late in the third quarter when two takeaways quickly turned into 14 points. It started when TCU quarterback Shawn Robinson, who frustrated Ohio State’s stingy defense last week, fumbled following a 16-yard run to his own 45-yard line. Texas recovered and scored eight plays later when quarterback Sam Ehlinger found Collin Johnson for a big-time, diving 31-yard touchdown to pull UT ahead 17–16. On the Frogs’ next possession, Robinson was intercepted by safety Caden Sterns. His electrifying return for a touchdown was called back after he stepped out of bounds at the 2-yard line, but Ehlinger ran the ball in for a score on the first play of the next possession.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL
In Its Closest Win of the Season, Alabama Looked as Terrifying as Ever

The Longhorns sealed the victory with a 10-play, 76-yard scoring drive in the fourth quarter after TCU missed a 41-yard field goal.

“We’re different, we’re learning how to finish each week,” coach Tom Herman said on the broadcast after the game. “We took a big step last week and took another one this week. But we’re far from a finished product.”

Same goes for TCU (albeit in a different trajectory), whose self-inflicted wounds carried over from its loss to Ohio State last week. The Horned Frogs turned the ball over three times against the Buckeyes, which helped swing the game against them.

Texas has many areas in which it needs to improve—ideally, it hopes, before facing Kyler Murray and Oklahoma in two weeks. The offense was inefficient on third down, going just 5 of 15, and the running game wasn’t as productive, amassing just 112 yards. There were some bright spots, like forcing four takeaways and capitalizing on them, and Ehlinger’s growing confidence. The sophomore quarterback went 22 of 32 for 255 yards with two touchdowns.

It might be too early to declare Texas “back” or even a Big 12 contender, but this doesn’t quite look like the same team that slogged through a 34–29 loss versus Maryland to start the season.

“Belief,” Herman said on what’s changed within the team. “We never waiver, we stayed positive. We understood that first week wasn’t us. We coached really hard and the players responded to that coaching.”

Hey MBHORSNFAN is Herman still done, finished and over? Honestly do you think this is just a blip on the radar and he's for sure still gone? Cause you seemed pretty damn sure.
To be fair to Mike he did pull back a little on his original pronouncement. I’m sure he’s as happy as we all are.

Yea, I remember him pulling the reigns back and saying we will no his future the next couple games.... well Herman stepped up. Nothing to see here. Just a Fan wanting Texas back

Well I didn't see him pull back. He never responded when I asked him what's he'd say if we beat SC and TCU. And I still want to know. Because he was talking like someone just slapped his mammy.

Just watch the games, we haven’t looked good in first halves of games offensively. The team looked like absolute trash against Maryland and unimpressive against Tulsa. Then you come out slow in the first half against USC and TCU. I’m just as glad as anyone for the win, but we still need a lot of work. The playcalling at times is still questionable and conservative, it’s like we’re scared to take shots early in games or when we have small leads. We need to learn how to keep the pedal down regardless of the score. We’re extremely lucky our defense has been playing lights out or else we could easily be 1-4 instead of 3-1.

Except for going for it on fourth down in our own territory play calling was pretty damn good today.
