Texas commit Jake Smith could make run at Arizona touchdown record
The eyes of Texas are on Jake Smith. The Notre Dame Prep senior is committed to play college football for the University of Texas Longhorns next fall.
“When I went to the spring game in April I just knew it was the place for me. I just fell in love with it,” said Smith. “There’s a lot of hidden talent here in Arizona. It’s finally starting to be discovered. There are a lot of kids out here with power five offers.”
After his performance last Friday, there will be many more eyes on the Saints star. Smith scored a stunning six touchdowns, as Notre Dame Prep erased a 14 point deficit against Sunnyslope to win 41-27. He caught a 56 yard touchdown, returned a kickoff 79 yards for a touchdown, ran 93 yards for a touchdown, caught an 11 yard pass (barely getting both feet in bounds) for a touchdown, ran 67 yards for a touchdown and caught a 9 yard pass for a touchdown. Here’s video proof.
Smith could make a run at the Arizona state record for touchdowns in a game, set by Nathan Wize at Tucson Sabino in 1997.
“You could put him in the slot, outside, the backfield, one thing you can’t coach is speed and it never goes out of style,” said George Prelock, when AZ Family made the trip to North Scottsdale for the Saints scrimmage vs Maricopa. “We just put him in a position where we can use him as a weapon. He’s always been able to come through for us.”
Smith has scored 11 touchdowns in two games and accounted for almost 700 yards of total offense. He won’t be the only Arizona athlete heading to Austin though. Chandler tight end Braydon Liebrock is committed to play for the Longhorns. The Red River Rivalry, the annual Texas vs Oklahoma game in Dallas, will have an Arizona feel. Pinnacle quarterback Spencer Rattler is committed to play for the Sooners.
“I'm excited for those games. Spencer is the best qb in the country. It will be tough to slow him down for sure,” said Smith.
“I believe in the Texas Longhorns and the class that we have. It's going to be one hell of a match up.”
Before heading to Austin, Smith has unfinished business at Notre Dame Prep. The Saints got to the state championship game in 2017 but fell to Peoria Centennial.
“The only thing on my mind is getting back there and finishing the job,” said Smith. “I really believe in this team. It’s not the same team as last year. We have a ton of young talent. We just need to get these guys experience and get back in our groove.”
Jake Smith and Notre Dame Prep are at Gilbert on Friday night.
