2018 Recruiting Board/Thread

They either leave or they don't.

We have four or five games left this year. Then we will sign a bunch of recruits in February. Then spring practice. Then summer workouts. Then August practice next year.

 Drink a beer. Worry less.
I am not worried just deflated.  Look at the cycle as a whole.

Our defense was top 20 in 2014 then sucked for 2 years after losing Hicks, Brown, and Diggs.

Now we are even better and might be rinse and repeat.

For example ou has 3 highly rated DE's committed to them.  One is a 5 star.  How many do we have?  Zero.

This class is awesome in the secondary but that hardly helps the DL and LB core.

We also thought Malik wasn't physical and HH/D. Elliot were JAGs coming into the year.

Expect guys to take the next step with another off season. This roster will be loaded with Jrs/Srs next year. That usually is a recipe for success
While that may be true that doesnt necessarily correspond to success.  Could we still be good on defense, yea we still have Orlando.

Nelson has always been a backup to Poona.  He even redshirted and Poona didnt.  Nelson is good but he is not a disruptive force Poona is.

Thompson has earned alot of praise.  So did Nelson every Spring so take that with a grain of salt.  Hes young and we have yet to see him consistently on the field.

Wheeler has been a disappointment his entire tenure.  He was a ESPN 300 recruit and still struggles with run fits.  Yea he plays great from time to time but he is not a Malik whether hes got one more year or not.  I am pretty sure Cuney can out run him.  Besides they are same year players and look at the difference between them.  So experience hasnt matter after 3 years why would it next year.

Bonney has made some great plays but he not on DeShon's level by any stretch.  Bonney gets vicitimized more than Boyd does.  Hell it was even one of Ryans film review where he bit on a run even though he was pass first defender.  He has fumble recoveries and a timely INT so he has that in common with DeShon as far as being in the right place at the right time.

Experience matters but so does talent.

This isn't a good business plan for a Longhorn Sports discussion forum.

It seems odd discussing how many early NFL entries we will have off a team that currently sits at .500.

Tom Herman said, at the beginning of the season, we have a starting 22 that can compete with anyone, but zero depth.  So.... it hurts next year's prospects immensely to have several good players enter the NFL draft early.  Texas must, must get away from counting on true freshmen throughout their 2 deep depth chart!

My personal opinion (worth about as much as the money I've cost my employer to write this):

Malik is the only one who is gone for sure.  The highlight real he created this year is 1st round impressive!  Regarding the other three, a good case could be made that each would benefit from returning for their senior campaigns.

You act like we been starting true freshman QB's for the last 2 years......oh wait.  ;)

At some point we should be stacked if Herman can continue to recruit well.   The lack of DL and OL this year puts us in bind on building some depth.

Nevermind me I am just jaded about Perkins and potentially losing Adeoye/White

Time will tell. I like my odds next year.

You guys need to see the bright side of recruits leaving early.

IF and it's a big IF all 3/4 of these guys declare and go in the first couple of rounds our 2019 recruiting becomes much easier

One of the big knocks on the program of late is we don't get guys to the NFL.

I think Malcom Brown has been our only 1st rounder in years I can't even remember the last one before him

Thats nice SHA, but I want to see Kate again?  When is she coming back?
She's talking to Mr Cook about that.

But there's another who could come sooner. And I think when we see one fall, there will be a couple others, too. Not necessarily just the 2018 class, either.

Thats what I gather from recent convos.

Ossai and his 2019 teammate OT Tyler Johnson?  That's my guess.

I've thought a little more about the Giles talk.  I'm wondering what exactly the deal is with his recruiting, he's coached up and sent some studs to the NFL so he has a legit resume ( lot better than the current OU DL coach ).  Missing out on all of Wright, Perkins, Carson, and B. Brown would be a big blow.  We better not mess up with DeMarvin Leal for 2019, who is right down the road and another site has said his mother prefers he stay close to home.  On the flip side the DL is playing as good as it has in a while and guys like Hager are wrecking havoc at the 3-4 DE spot, and Nelson, Ford, and Roach weren't really highly rated recruits out of HS.  Seems a bit strange with Giles's pedigree and how the DL is playing that not 1 of these guys is committed here.
