2017 Recruiting Thread Part 1

NTG, I don't think he's saying Heard is incapable as he's most certainly capable. However he didn't do it much and there's concern about his ability to do so now post injury.
Buchelle  was also injured and IMO is more apt to be injured than Heard. Spring practice will tell.

If Coach Herman can make an undersized, former WR - Greg Ward - into a very good CFB quarterback, I like his chances with Jerrod. Remember the 2015 Cal game? #Believe
Guy on OB who knows Ward and coached him said that Ward was a pass first QB in high school. He moved to WR to get early playing time at Houston. He also said Heard is much better runner than Ward but Ward is a lot further along than Heard will ever be in the passing game. Heard is slow through is progressions and holds the ball too long as well. Also does not read defenses very well. This person said Ward was very good at these things.

Okay, does anybody know if J.T. Barrett was a "pass-first" QB in high school?

Maybe Ward was further along at UH, but I disagree if your assertion is Heard doesn't have the tools to be an effective CFB quarterback. I guess we'll see.

I'll say this. I think enough of Heard and his abilities that I'd really like to see him and what he does behind a good offensive line. The last time we saw Heard play QB, things were not very good along the OL.

Three things that bother me about Heard and I've long been one of his biggest proponents. 1) He has awkward footwork in passing situations and is primarily a threat in north-south opportunities (running). 2) He gets brain locked and panics. I don't know if its just because he prefers a jailbrake offensive play or because the OL he had was so bad. Initially, he parlayed that into big gainers. Then, not so much. 3) Arm strength. We saw him throw a couple of bombs with success. Seldom ever went over the deep middle though. Not really sure he ever actually did. Perhaps thats on the play calling coach. But I worried about his arm strength.

He's got good talent and great vision as a runner. But IMO he comes with some limitations.

At Denton, every other play was a broken play and he just took over games in those situations. Kind of like Colt McCoy used to do. Heard used that all the way to the state championship.

There's something there. Just not sure what it is yet.

Another thing about Heard was the OC situation was a cluster. It would be interesting to see how he would perform with a competent OC instead of the Norvell/Watson/Wickline conglomerate he was forced to play under.
This!! Remember heard had 0 coaching in his RS Fresh year. His best receiver was Burt who couldn't get a game last year. 2 freshman starters on the Oline and they were our BEST lineman. Plus D'Onta and Warren were still growing up.

I hope for Heards future they leave him at WR it's his only chance at playing on Sundays. But i don't really like the idea of Merrick as our primary backup if we want to Shirt Sam

Wouldn't Buechele become our primary back up?

Totally agree

The staff probably feels the same about Merrick as you do. They also probably realized the lack of depth at QB behind Shane. Most likely why they moved Heard back to QB. There is chatter of the staff looking into a JUCO or transfer QB to bring in as well.

2017 from Arizona -- 6'6 or 6'7 DE/TE

247 says an "intriguing jumbo athlete"

He de-committed from Washington State last night

Looks like we like him as a DE -- and he says he will OV to Austin midweek next week

IMO they are hurting Heard if they move him back to QB because he has the measurables to be an excellent play making reciever, let him continue to develop.

He's not going to beat out Buchelle with another year under his belt.

I don't get all the second guessing? I guess we need something to talk about since no game weeks. Lol
