2017 Recruiting Thread Part 1

Painful seeing these Texas boys playing for bama, i.e. Hurts and Brown...smh. Really hoping this trend stops the next few years.

It's going to be interesting who Herman targets as the QB for the 2018 class. RB as well since neither position has an offer yet.

Hurt is decent but lets not kid ourselves he is surrounded by some elite talent. He has a long way to go in the passing game. Buechele is much better throwing the ball right now. Put Buechelle with Bama and he would be a BEAST

Totally agree

Charlie Strong's first mistake. One of several.
hindsight is 20/20.  we're at the same spot we were 3 years ago.  we have a new coach from the same level competition; same level of success.

can someone say with 100% certainty that watson was the #1 choice?  or was strong handcuffed?

in any case, i once again hope for the best for our program.  we certainly will have many players with game experience and a good set of upperclassmen.

I forget where I saw it but I read that Strong wanted Morris, who was the OC at Clemson at the time, but Patterson thought it would cost Texas too much money. Or maybe I was dreaming, I can't remember.

Be that said, he did bring in Watson and we all know how that turned out. Oh well, let's move on to the Herman era!

The buyout for Morris was ridiculously high if he took a lateral move anywhere else. Apparently Strong kicked tires on Herman as well and depending on who you believe Herman said no or Urban stepped in and shut it down.

6 of 7 total CBs show Johnson to Texas (all 6 made in last 3-4 days)

Gary Johnson: ........ it sounds like Texas is sitting in a good spot as of right now. One person even went on to say they’d be “shocked if he doesn’t go to Texasâ€. Though that person added things can always change once the visits happen. The consensus seems to be that Texas needs him in their class more than most of the other schools he’s considering, and that usually helps when you’re recruiting a JUCO guy as they look to see the field right away.

Johnson took his first official visit to Louisville. He has three others planned, Oregon on 1/13, Texas on 1/20, and USC on 1/27. I was told a school Johnson thinks very highly of is USC, which could make things interesting as the Trojans have the last visit. Johnson won’t be able to enroll early at a school in January, so he will be a summer enrollee most likely. The one school that could use an advantage to get Johnson in early is Oregon. They’re on a quarters system. So if he graduates early enough, he could enroll at Oregon in March. I’m not sure if that will play a factor in his recruitment, but it is noteworthy.

I was told Todd Orlando is personally recruiting Johnson very hard. Texas seems to have themselves positioned in a nice spot so far after getting in the game with Johnson so late. – (Andrew)

Xavier Newman: ..... We have been told that as of now Texas has some other guys they are looking at. However, we’ve also been told that Newman did reach out to Texas. A team to watch is Baylor as Newman is officially visiting the Bears this weekend. A big reason Newman committed to Colorado was due to the fact that he had two HS teammates committed to the Buffs and they have a strong DeSoto connection on that staff. Well I’ve heard that the new Bears staff feels confident about their chances to flip DeSoto (TX) Colorado WR commit KD Nixon, which could play a role in Newman’s recruitment. Another factor is former Cedar Hill HC Joey McGuire who’s now on the Baylor staff, and could start flexing his muscles in the area. – (Andrew)

I realize you love Strong but for the love of God please stop making excuses for him.  You say hindsight is 20/20, Strong couldn't even get to .500 one year out of his three seasons and had embarrassing losses to Iowa State and Kansas.

You act like Strong wasn't dealt a fair hand?  I have 5 million per year that says he was, plus Strong picked his staff and he decided on keeping some of that staff after dismal results(Watson).  I was just talking to Seahorn about how Strong did not offer/land a JUCO QB his entire tenure here. Seahorn said Strong left it up to the OC's. How did that work out?  So its [insert staff coach here] for the losing records, blowout losses, porous defense, inept QB's, etc.  You can place blame on everyone but Strong it seems.  Charlie was the head coach and HE was responsible.  Period.

If Herman sucks an egg here as well I will be first in line to kick his ass to curb too.

i simply asked a question.  you can interpret that how ever you want.  if you have the answer to that question then please enlighten us.  if you don't then you're in the same boat with the rest of us.  sharing opinions.

Watson wasnt Strong 1st choice.  I believe at the time it was Morris but the buyout was like 5 million or something.  That was the news we were all told.

My point isnt just this post Rotty, its your past ones as well.  I get it you like Strong.  I thought he was a cool guy too but he was a terrible head coach.

We blame everyone from Staff members (Watson,Bedford, etc), players, refs, Mack Brown, even Boone T Pickens for losses and a miserable 3 years but Strong gets a pass because he was never dealt a fair shake?  I call BS especially when the President of the school flys to Tulsa to help the HC get a new OC.

Strong was the guy in charge.
