Embarrassing.

NTG, do you know how arrogant and entitled I used to be?

I was so tired of spending New Year's Eve in Dallas, I used to hope that we would tie someone, not lose you understand, but tie, so that we could go to the Orange or Sugar Bowl. If you check the old Southwest Conference rules, if a tie was between the prior year's champion and another team, the prior year's champion did not represent at the Cotton Bowl Just once, I wanted to go to the Orange or Sugar. I was an entitled brat.

So, I'm not claiming innocence. There's a reason that I recognize the signs.

Hook 'em!
how is this example anywhere near what Texas fans feel today? In 2016 it's not hoping for Orange over Cotton. It's hoping for the Motel 6 Cactus bowl over yet another losing season.
I make no apologies for being pissed off that we suck nor do I apologize for for my 'arrogance' that we shouldn't be an also ran in the worst major conference in the game.

A bad season should be 9 wins. Seven wins shouldn't be reason to keep a losing coach.

Better coaches with better records have been let go at UT.

Here are a few random observations with a conclusion and a wish thrown in for free:

1)  Strong takes over the defense and within two weeks they look like the 85 Bears.  This is what everybody expected when Strong was hired, based on his stint as Urban Meyer's Defensive Coordinator.

2) Strong brings back Watson as the Offensive Coordinator after an historically bad season and then demotes him after one game.

3)  Strong brings back Bedford as the Defensive Coordinator after an historically bad season and then demotes him after four games.

4)  The University President and Athletic Director have to get on a plane with Coach Strong to convince Tulsa's Offensive Coordinator to accept the same position at TEXAS for a significant pay increase.

5)  Special teams have ranged from average to a complete mess over the past three seasons; game management has been poor as well.

Conclusion:  Strong is a good guy; a great defensive mind; but has a lot of room for growth as a Head Coach and probably is running out of time here to make adjustments.

Wish:  I still have this thought that with the right people around him, Strong could be a success.  He knows how to recruit, he connects with his players and they love him.  My hope / wish is that he still might work out here; although my brain says that it is probably unlikely.

Strong Survival Kit:

Somehow get to 8 wins.... or 7 without any embarrassing losses.

DC and DB Coaches are let go.  Would love for Bedford to stay as DB Coach but that is impractical to impossible... I get that.

Hire a top flight DB Coach.... exclude from list of candidates anyone who just got fired from another college program.

Move Jean-Mary to DC / LB Coach.  DC is in title only, but it gets a good Assistant Coach a nice pay raise.

Tell S. Gilbert "Offense is yours; defense is mine."

Stay the heck away from the offense!  Organize practice schedule - run practice for defense and make all the calls for the D.

This is the definition of "the hammer hitting the nail on the head".

I saw a thread on another site and the title pretty much summed it up.

"Mediocrity Has Lowered Our Standards"

I think that mediocrity has lowered my standards.

I find this line amusing because I doubt CFS ever had his hands on the offense, based on reports.

Agreed.

I think my larger point was - run / own the defense - he is probably better than anyone he could hire.  And, hire an outstanding OC (I think he has one) and let him do his work.  The second part of the formula may not be a change at all.

Being a "walk around coach" is wonderful if you are great at hiring / evaluating / overseeing your coaching staff.  I think "hands on" with regard to defense is a better method for Coach Strong because the before mentioned characteristics are not his strengths.  He has strengths but those are not them.

I started a thread regarding Strong just continuing to run the defense as opposed to hiring a new dc. I kinda think that's the route we go providing the defense shows much improvement and Strong is retained...

Street, rather than making a smart ass comment, I will make a sincere effort to respond.

1)  I am an arrogant Texas fan who thinks we should win, or be in, every game.

2)  I am not happy when we lose, and I want to know why we lost, if we do.

3)  Since winning every game isn't realistic, we should, at the least, be in the playoff conversation every year.  There is no excuse for us not to be:  we are in a recruiting hotbed, we have the resources, the University is located in one of the most desirable college cities, and we have tremendous fan support most of the time.

I wasn't offering the other post as 'proof' of anything.  I was simply sitting on my couch, watching TV, and relaxing.  Had I been writing a formal paper, perhaps I would have been more careful; however, since that wasn't on the agenda, I said, "The heck with it, why not?"

That's about it.  End of story.  Time to relax.

I assure you my smart-ass comments are made with the utmost sincerity.
Evidently I didn't understand the point about equating arrogance with tiring of going to the Cotton Bowl repeatedly. Still don't, but it's not important.

Anyway, FWIW, your points in this post are pretty much my thoughts as well. Have a good evening.

The point was, street, we won the conference so often, The Cotton Bowl, where the Conference champion played had become very ho-hum.  I wanted to go some place different and exciting, though that would mean we wouldn't win the Conference.  The best I could come up with was a tie. Frankly, I think that is pretty arrogant.

Do you know how grateful I would be for that type of boredom now?  Probably not.  Very grateful.  Anyway, I will never again complain about winning conference championships, even if the destination is, oh, I don't know, Timbuktoo, for lack of anything else.

Hope that helps.
