Euless (Texas) Trinity Rivals250 defensive tackle and Oklahoma commitment
Chris Daniels has had a busy Sunday.
First he returned home from his official visit to Texas, then he caught up with coaches from Ohio State, and then he hosted Texas A&M assistant coach Mark Hagen.
Texas jumped into the race for Daniels a day before his announcement to Oklahoma, and the visit allowed him to take a long look into the Longhorn program.
“I knew a little bit about Texas, but I never took a visit,†Daniels said. “When I took the visit first off all I liked the environment. Second, I liked the fact one of my teammates (Patrick Vahe) was there. Third of all I was talking to coach Strong and the staff and they said the team is 80-percent black athletes so if they’re 80-percent black athletes why not have 80-percent black coaches and things like that and he can actually relate to us. I thought it was pretty cool.â€
Another aspect of the Texas program also caught his attention.
“That coach says he could see me coming out there and getting a lot of PT as a freshman,†Daniels said. At first I was kind of nervous because what if I don’t do good. But they had three All-American freshmen come out of Texas, so I feel if they can do it I can do it too.â€
Texas A&M’s Sunday visit also made a strong impression.
“It was nice,†Daniels said. “He was kind of refreshing me. I don’t know if you knew this but they were my No. 1 at first. I was going to commit and all that kind of stuff. He was just telling me that I was their No. 1 and he was refreshing me on why they were my No. 1. It was giving me memories back and everything so that’s why I changed my visit from Ohio State to Texas A&M on the 29th.â€
They were a few reasons why Texas A&M stood out at one time.
“Because they were SEC. The SEC in my mind is the best conference,†Daniels said. “Also they’re in Texas. At one point I really, really wanted to stay in Texas, and not be too far away.â€
After the last few days, it is reasonable to ask just how strong Daniels’ commitment is. He characterizes it as a “strong,†commitment, and he there is a big reason why the Sooners currently remain at the top.
“To be honest, not only are they my day one, but even when stuff was getting hard and A&M kind of left they always stayed with me,†Daniels said. “They’re loyal.â€
Daniels plans to take his next official visit to Tennessee on January 22, and take his final official visit to Texas A&M on January 29.
Bob Stoops will make his in-home visit with the Daniels family on Monday, and Tennessee will make an in-home visit on Thursday. Charlie Strong will make an in-home visit next Monday and then Kevin Sumlin will visit that Wednesday.
