From Football Braniacs

We will have more details this week but wanted to pass along some bullet point notes from our sources. It appears this was very successful weekend for coach Strong and his staff.

– Jeffrey McCulloch: Was told “mama signed off†and we feel good about where Texas stands here.

– Lil Jordan Humphrey: Let’s just say Reggie Hemphill knows the secret here…

– Stephon Taylor: He had a chance to sit in on a film session and really see how he would fit into the defense. I was told “he saw what he needed to see and felt good about how he fits in the schemeâ€.

– Shackleford: Andrew has been predicting this one to Texas for a while. I’m told…he’s not wrong.

– Deontay Anderson: I personally felt like Texas was going to be on the outside looking in for Anderson but Texas made an impression. Apparently Anderson told the other players at one point, “I’m going to stay homeâ€. Must be kept in mind though that Anderson still has more visits and for some reason, when Ole Miss is involved it just feels like they’ll win out. Texas is making this interesting though.

– Marcel Southall: I always felt Southall would end up at Oklahoma and still believe that could happen but this last minute return trip certainly made an impression on the Southalls. His father said, “they have on point, Coach Strong and the rest of the staff…much better than expectedâ€

– Chris Daniels: This will be a true red river rivalry. The Daniels family thoroughly enjoyed their time with Strong.

– UPDATE (2:45 pm): Received a quick update from one of Erick Fowler’s family members who took the trip with Erick to Texas this weekend. One of the big issues for Erick and his family is, as a Fox LB, Naashon Hughes already holds the spot and even if there is rotation, Derick Roberson would seem to be next in line. Apparently, Roberson told Erick that he will be switching to a true defensive end next year which obviously opens things up for Fowler. Bottom line, “Erick was impressed†with the whole weekend.

Some commentary from h/s coach --

“He’ll get some 15-yarders every once in a while. But I’d rather say, ‘Whoa,’ than ‘Giddy up.’

“Our whole team, after last season, we realized we weren’t mentally or physically tough enough,†Shipley continued. “And Shack has been great for the rest of the team. He kind of personifies what we want our kids to be like.

“He got a few 15-yarders for driving a guy, picking him up and slamming him on the ground.

“A lot of times they’ll call him for holding, because he’ll block a guy five or 10 yards and then he’ll basically just pick ‘em up and body slam him, jump on top of ‘em and try to break the other guy’s will.

You guys should post everything "Charlie F"ing Strong" tweets. That guy is a riot. Always appreciate the laugh.

Deontay Anderson --

“I loved the visit.  Coach Strong and all the staff did a great job with my family and I. I had a great time for sure. I loved it.â€

“Coach Strong said I have no choice but to get an education.  He said I have a unique talent, but I’m doing everything athletically.  He told me they would teach me how to play the safety position. That really caught my eye.â€

“The vibe was good.  They treated all of us like we were already there as players.â€

“The food was great.  Everything was great, really. We went to Coach Strong’s house Saturday night -- he has a really big house.â€

re: Fowler --

Fowler, like all the recruits, met with Charlie Strong for a one-on-one.  One of the biggest questions for Fowler is exactly where he would fit on the defense.

Strong assured Fowler he's a priority for Texas next season, and that Fowler is a Fox end for the Horns.

Fowler was told there's still not a "true" Fox on campus (a player who can do everything Vance and Charlie want out of the position) and he'd have the opportunity to compete for playing time right away.

He was also told there is one less player to compete against at the position (roberson)
