The Future of the OL/DL

I am more than a little worried about our OL and DL in the future.

Offensive Line:

All the hype of a much improved OL this year didnt show at all.  We are starting 2 newcomers in Conner Williams and Patrick Vahe.  Both are supposedly better at run blocking than pass blocking.  (Get a clue Watson)  Ronnie Major is a hopeful.  Out side of these guys I am not seeing many blue chip OL in this years current crop of recruits.  I know In state lineman are slim pickens but without a few highly rated prospects we might be years away from a decent line.

Defensive Line:

Lampkin fiasco.  Malcom Browns early departure.  We are very thin at DL.   The pressure on ND was non existent.  Any highly rated talent on the horizon?

Otherwise we are in for years of rebuilding

(with all due respect) the game is based on partnerships between Coaches and players. We all know Greg Davis was not the best play caller, but he knew he had players such as VY and Colt that had the skill level to improvise if plays did not play out as they scripted. We have to take a step back and be REAL.

Swoopes cannot think under pressure to handle unscripted scenarios. We must move forward with a new experiment or Coaching jobs will be on the line

No more sugar coating patty cake..I'm literally watching the TTech game and thinking UT vs Tech might be an even match up. Come on Man!

Fortunately, neither one of you call the shots. It takes time to build a team. The O-line is respectable for a young line and the D-Line is actually pretty good. You don't even see that this was a very good ND team, because you're so focused on your unrealsitic expectations, I've seen silly fans like you before and it's annoying! Shut up!

D-Line was pretty good?  Excuse me while I chuckle at your great insight.

I guess CS is a moron too when he told reporters in press conference that we got beat handily on both sides of the line of scrimmage.  Obviously our DL and OL played very well.  /smirk

We had zero pressure on ND the entire game.  Please come with some evidence of this pretty good crap.  Do you mean the 3-5 seconds the ND QB had to sit back in the pocket and pick apart the secondary?  Or the 1-2 seconds our QB had to throw the ball before ditching it into the ground?

Chilly, I truthfully dont have unrealistic expectations. What i do have is background in behavioral science, a thorough knowledge of football, and an understanding of the competitive nature required from a Div 1 athlete (top 3% percent of the gene pool). Also, i can tell you that even though Swoopes has the physical build that most humans don't have, he is also lacking the drive and push that an average male under 5,'6 has... (short man syndrome). hes a big man with a timid character. nothing wrong with that as he pursues his education at a Top tier college in the U.S. I just don't trust him to hold the most difficult position in all sports (quarterback)

DMAC, I do understand your frustration. But I think he has a point on the DL. The OL we faced tonight might be the best in the nation this year. They are VERY good. It's easy to look average against that.

That said, I don't think we're great. We're just good, right now. . . on the DL. Part of the LB play we praised tonight was because our DL was occupying OL so the LBs could make plays. At least thats how it worked for a while.

COMPOUND that uneven matchup with the fact that our offense was totally inept, keeping this defense on the field longer than they were capable of while playing at a high level. What we saw tonight was the same thing unfold that we saw last year. Lost offense, overtaxed defense = disaster in the late 3rd and 4th quarters. And that's how it played out in real time.

So at least part of your angst needs to be directed at the set up the offense put them in.

The offense is where my real concerns are, particularly at QB and the OL. That OL simply has to do better than what we saw. While Notre Dame's OL is stellar, their DL wasn't much better than ours if at all. Yet, our OL made them look like all americans.

I have to think Watson's on the hot seat. If you Tivo'd the game, look at Charlie's face as the game ends. Tomorrow, I'd hate to be the fan because it's going to be splashed.

SHA,

I respect your opinion most of the time.  I guess the word good is very subjective and comparative.  Maybe our DL is good vs Rice, but they were handled last night.  You do realize the running back QB for ND had a 92.9 QBR?  19/22 is almost flawless.  I do not believe ND will be playing for a NC.  We heard this same crap about UCLA last year.  We made ND look better than they actually are.  Our DL is obviously no where near as good as last year.

As for the OL, Im all for playing Vahe and Conner.  But can you please run the god damn ball?!?!?!?  I swear this elementary playground OC Watson is a total joke.  "Everyone go long!"

OL takes time to get better unfortunately after a full preseason we didnt look very good vs an average DL.

My whole point of this thread is lets get real for second.  WHERE are the 5 star OL and DL?  We didnt land any last year and so far none for 2016.  Remember Toby Weathersby?

That my friend is reason to worry.

Both of you guys make good points.

ND was physically better than we were on both the offensive and defensive lines. The defensive tackles were treated like poor stepchildren by ND. I noticed a lot of the time that Ridgeway was completely handled, and he is supposedly our best.

Flowers just waved through the pass rush a few times. He does not have the lateral movement necessary to pass protect. He and Williams were just unable to handle the stunts.

I couldn't believe that Gray only carried the ball 2 or 3 times in the first half. There was nothing there to slow down the ND pass rush, and poor Swoopes never had the time to be effective (he requires more time than most).

The secondary just could not execute the zone defense. The safeties were too deep, and they all seems to be out of position most of the time.

This was overall a very poor performance. Really disappointing.

I'm thinking that if I were a betting man, I would take Rice and the points.

If Rice beats Texas then

I know its hard to fathom such an idea but Rice did hang 56 points against Wagner.  Ok its Wagner but after watching Texas look pretty inept and now ranking 119 out of 120 on offense I dont believe we can rest assured Rice is a "W"

There are uncommited DL prospects out there if Charlie can land them. However OL prospects are very slim[and he is packed to leave town].IMO Texas needs six OL men and they are not available. If some one disagree name the prospects who are not already commited elsewhere.

The OL we've seen in our last two games are the two best OLs in college football (Arkansas in the bowl, ND Saturday). We aren't the first DL to have problems with those two OL units.

Yes, as a result, their QB had time.

Don't disagree with anything else you said.

The line is -15. If I were a betting man, I might take the Owls and 15. Don't know if we can score that much even against Rice.

This from Mr. Cherry:

"I couldn't believe that Gray only carried the ball 2 or 3 times in the first half. There was nothing there to slow down the ND pass rush, and poor Swoopes never had the time to be effective (he requires more time than most)."

There are ways to burn or slow down a pass rush, but Swoopes/Watson do not have it in their arsenal.  Heard has it.

Fellows, I wrote more and erased it.  There is no point.  We cannot give Swoopes the time he needs; therefore, it is time to move on.

Hook 'em!

SHA, so you read Strong the same way I did?  He was pissed?

Find out where and how Notre Dame gets those mammoth clones on their OL and go recruit there !!!!!!!!!!!
